GRETNA, La. (AP) — Former New Orleans Saints wide receiver Robert Meachem is behind bars after failing to pay nearly $400,000 in child support and alimony.

State District Judge Adrian Adams sent Meachem to jail in Jefferson Parish on Monday for 30 days. Adams said Meachem could be released once he pays his ex-wife, Andrea Rhodes, $100,000. According to court clerk minutes, if that doesn't happen, he will remain in jail until March 15.

NOLA.com/The Times-Picayune reports (http://bit.ly/2kuTGPb ) Adams also denied Meachem's motion for a new trial and fined him $500 for failing to bring written testimony from his manager, Tomeka Tovell, about his finances.

Meachem and Rhodes share custody of their two children. The couple separated in May 2014 and was officially divorced in November 2015, according to court records.

As part of the divorce settlement, a court ordered Meachem to pay $20,000 per month in child and spousal support. Attorneys for Rhodes in July and September asked the court to hold Meachem in contempt for failing to make most of the payments.

Rhodes' attorneys claimed Meachem secretly took $1.8 million from accounts shared with his ex-wife. They also contend he caused more than $5.8 million to disappear from the former couple's joint investment accounts.

Meachem testified in December that former business associates stole millions from him, forcing him to borrow money from old NFL associates just to get by.

Meachem played for the Saints for six seasons, from 2008-2011 and again from 2013-2014. In 2012, he signed a four-year contract with the San Diego Chargers worth $14 million, but he was let go after a season.

More than six years after helping the Saints win their lone Super Bowl title, former NFL player Robert Meachem should be held in contempt of court for failing to pay nearly $400,000 in child support and alimony owed to his ex-wife, according to a preliminary ruling Monday by a Jefferson Parish judge.

Meachem, who was absent for a court hearing Monday, still has time to object to that ruling in writing. He also can contest the ruling in person during a hearing tentatively scheduled for Dec. 21 in front of 24th Judicial District Court Judge Adrian Adams.

However, if Adams affirms in a separate ruling that Meachem is indeed in contempt of court, he could fine and jail the former wide receiver.

Meachem's attorney did not respond to a request for comment Tuesday.

Court records at one point noted that Meachem and his ex-wife, Andrea Rhodes, disagreed on "the amount of retroactive (child) support due" in the dispute.

Meachem and Rhodes separated in 2014 after nearly six years of marriage and two children. Their divorce was finalized last year, and they share custody of the children.

This summer, public records show, Meachem didn't challenge recommendations from a Jefferson Parish domestic court hearing officer that he pay $20,000 a month to Rhodes in child support dating back to July 2014, plus $8,667 for a portion of June 2014.

Through November, that equates to $588,667, but Meachem has paid only $200,648 of that, leaving him $388,019 in arrears, according to documents filed Monday by hearing officer Lisa Matthews.

Meachem and Rhodes were supposed to appear before Matthews on Monday to address the ex-Saint's debt as well as his failure to make a woman described as his manager available for a deposition earlier this year. But neither Meachem nor his attorney of record, S. Guy deLaup III, showed up, court records said.

Matthews then filled out paperwork recommending that Adams find Meachem in contempt of court and punish him appropriately for not producing his manager for the deposition as well as for failing to pay the child support and alimony.

Meachem should be able to avoid being punished for contempt of court only if he pays off the $388,019 debt by Dec. 20, Matthews recommended.

Adams signed off on Matthews' recommendation, but that decision is considered provisional until the follow-up court hearing set for next month.

Rhodes' lead attorney, Mitchell Hoffman, declined to discuss the case against Meachem on Tuesday, saying only, "We expect and hope the judge enforces the law and requires that he make the payments he owes and punishes him if he doesn't."

Meachem, who last suited up in 2014, spent the first four and last two of his seven seasons in the NFL with the Saints, scoring 27 touchdowns in those six seasons and helping New Orleans win Super Bowl XLIV in February 2010.

But Meachem made his real money in his sole season away from New Orleans: in 2012, when the San Diego Chargers signed him to a four-year contract that guaranteed him $14 million.

The Chargers released Meachem one year into his deal after he caught only 14 passes and scored just two touchdowns, both of which came in a game against the Saints in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.

Court records describe Meachem as a resident of Jefferson Parish and Rhodes as a resident of St. Charles Parish.

These people are millionaires, not some couple making 60k and living in a 1,000 square foot home. 20k a month isn't much for a guy who was making millions a year

The divorce was finalized last year and he hasn't played since 2014. He isn't making millions and hasn't been making millions for years yet is expected to pay over a quarter of a million dollars to her every year on top of whatever expenses he incurs for himself or for the kids since he has joint custody.

na, male birth control is a great idea. If you're in a relationship you can guarantee no shenanigans. I know a guy who was with a butch who was (supposedly) on birth control. Long story short...she lied, pregnant, He's now paying her 1200 a month support. If he had the pill he could've prevented this bullshit

Massachusetts used to have lifetime alimony, but I think they changed it a few years ago. I think it was in response to a guy who set himself on fire on the courthouse steps because alimony made his life a living hell.
