Former Euclid High School guidance counselor pleads guilty to sexual relationship with student
EUCLID, Ohio -- A former Euclid High School guidance counselor pleaded guilty to charges accusing her of having a sexual relationship with an 18-year-old student.
Ronetta N. Smith, 36, of Cleveland Heights pleaded guilty Thursday to reduced charges of one count of sexual battery and one count of attempted tampering with evidence, according to court records.
Smith was indicted March 8 on four counts of sexual battery and one count of tampering with evidence. Her trial had been scheduled to begin Monday in Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court.
Smith will be labeled a Tier 3 sex offender as part of her sentencing on Sept. 22, court records show.
Defense attorney Rufus Sims was not available for comment Tuesday morning.
Smith sent the student text messages that referenced having sex in classrooms and her office. She also texted the 18-year-old student about visiting his house after prom, according to records included in her personnel file.
Smith, a counselor at Euclid High School since 2007, resigned in March and is banned from campus, Superintendent Keith Bell said at the time.
The district placed Smith on paid leave Jan. 29 after receiving an anonymous tip accusing her of inappropriate behavior, the district said in a Feb. 3 letter to the Ohio Department of Education's Office of Professional Conduct.
The tipster — who did not identify herself when she called using a blocked phone number — said she'd read explicit text messages that Smith sent the student, according to a Jan. 29 email from Principal Angela Terella to Euclid City Schools Assistant Superintendent Charles Smialek.
The district notified the student's mother shortly after speaking with Smith on Jan. 29.
The district also notified Cuyahoga County Children and Family Services. The agency said it would not investigate because the student was 18 years old.
