Suicide Sqaud Trailer #3

I have more faith in this film because David Ayer is writing and directing, his track record for story telling is pretty good

If that includes some the of supposed re-shoots?

they better give Deadpool 10% of the gross

and this looks like its gonna rock!

Looks funny action packed violent and kinetic

like the Lucky You tattoo on Harley (not sure of the ret-con origin though)

but looks really really good.

As promised, Warner Bros. debuted a new Suicide Squad trailer at the conclusion of tonight’s MTV Movie Awards. For those who just want the “trailer review,” it’s a quick and punchy 135-second clip, basically selling the film as a frothy violent action comedy which it may or may not be following the much-discussed reshoots now taking place to either add more action or punch up the laughs. It’s not quite the “revelation” of the last trailer, but “Ballroom Blitz” makes a solid choice for the musical accompaniment. Which song from the Wayne’s World soundtrack will Warner Bros. marketing use next? I vote for “Dream Weaver.”

This new trailer is the third look at the film, with the caveat that the SDCC reel was not necessarily supposed to be for public consumption, and it has been over four months since the first official theatrical trailer. The first debuted at the end of a 30-minute television special about the DC Extended Universe. Overeager Kevin Smith narration/hosting aside, it seemed that night that they had their ducks in a row and might just pull this off. But then… well, you know.

Batman v Superman is no flop, as it is going to end its theatrical run with around $900 million worldwide. However, it was not the “Wowsers, the entire world is now interested in the DCEU!” barnburner that Warner Bros. was hoping for, with the production of Justice League now becoming something akin to righting a ship and/or damage control as opposed to a victory lap.

Under said positive scenario, with Batman v Superman getting better reviews and having stronger legs, Suicide Squad arguably would have been something of a grace note. It would be a “Look at this completely off-the-wall comic book supervillain team-up movie!” capper to the first year of the new DCEU. But now? It is up to the supervillains to save the franchise.

Now as I’ve noted before, they are some solid trump cards being offered. Will Smith is a movie star, Viola Davis is a name, and the film features the DCEU debuts of The Joker (Jared Leto) and Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie). And, pardon the broken record, but a crowd-pleasing Harley Quinn could be a massive ace-in-the-whole as she is the most popular female comic book character in existence right now.

I have no idea if the David Ayer film “does her justice” (and I am sure we will spend much of August debating that point), but she is as big a deal for general audiences, especially female comic nerds, as the appearance of Wonder Woman was for Dawn of Justice. And don’t forget the whole Batman vs. The Joker dynamic. We’ll know eventually do what extent Ben Affleck and Jared Leto occupy valuable onscreen real estate at the expense of the title ensemble, but we should not underestimate the appeal of good-old-fashioned Bat vs. Clown squabble to general audiences.

The film, of course, opens on August 6th of this year. To be fair nobody expects it to hit Dawn of Justice numbers worldwide. There are only two movies opening in August that have ever topped $500 million (The Sixth Sense and Guardians of the Galaxy), and four (Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Signs, and The Bourne Ultimatum) have even topped $400m. However, like Guardians and TMNT, this one will have the advantage of being the last big blockbuster of the summer season (sorry, Ben Hur).

However, the real value is not just in box office glory, but in actually existing as a film that audiences enjoy and that gets people excited about the DCEU. Warner Bros. has been stressing the whole “filmmaker-driven approach” idea, namely that each stand-alone film will be as separate an entity as possible while still operating in the same continuity. If Suicide Squad clicks, then it will be a firm acknowledgment that just because you did not like one DCEU movie does not mean you will not like the others. With two indifferently (or negatively received) DCEU movies already in release, that is the most valuable thing these supervillains could provide.

Suicide Squad opens August 6th. In an irony that the Joker would appreciate, it is up to the baddest supervillains around to save not just the world but also their own connected universe franchise.

That should've been the first trailer. It's the first one that actually explains the premise of the movie.

Not really. This one has even more jokes and a Guardians of the Galaxy style soundtrack. The next one will have dancing and shit. Seems to me like they went back and added more clever banter and more Baflack. I want this to be good, but too many cooks...
