Black America in 1990...30 years later has anything changed?

The video above is a program from 1990 regarding the state of black america specifically black men ages 20-29.

Some of the topics from the 1990 vid:

Black unemployment

High rates of crime/violence in the black community

Substandard levels of education in the black community

Teen pregnancy

Why is it that 25 years later, these same topics of discussion continue to be major issues in our communities across the country? How can we utilize the last 25 years as a learning experience in making sure that the next 25 years improve?

We are a whole lot worse. I can't say for sure, but the glorification of the gang and thug life during the same time that the war on drugs was going on did a lot to affect what young people aspired to be. Even though desegregation was the greatest hit, because it took Black success out of black neighborhoods which led the youth to have such low standards for role models, having thugs, gang bangers, drug dealers and the like on tv and radio had a negative effect

Since 1990, teen pregnancy has gone up with 14 year old not looking like 14 year olds. The stop snitching policy that runs rampant in the black community was placed on non-combatants rather than the initiated, which led to fewer crimes against the community being solved. It is my opinion that if there is a cold blooded killer who can and will strike out at any time on anyone why not get him off the streets if you know he killed someone? The failure to remove cancers like this from the community has threatened the community's existence

I don't think anything today could be as bad as the crack era...to say that things are worse today than they were 25 years ago would be like saying the 80s was worse than the 50s...:hmm: anyone black who lived thru those eras would tell you thats patently not true..

nostalgia may make times in the past SEEM better but they weren't..

Look at the videos in the link I posted, especially the 2nd one then you will see how things may be different now but just as bad as worse off for us as the crack era....
Spoiler: we just traded in one drug in for the next..

some things got better......I am going to keep real in the mid to late 90's things was looking real good but two things happened that slowed or stop our progress. 1. we got a little lazy. 2. GW Bush and the Republicans taken over states (especially southern states) really fuck us over i.e. cutting a ton of state jobs that was good paying jobs.

Gang violence and teen pregnancy is no where near where it was in the 90s.The biggest change I've seen is tattoos.

Unfortunately, for black America its a lost cause.

You cant compare this generation with the 60's and 70's generation of Black Americans who inspired black people from all over the world.

I have to agree with everything you listed. In fact if anything has changed we've regressed back to the 60s.

We lost our focus so now were back to dealing with increased racism, police killings, increased police brutality, gangs, drugs, increased unemployment and cultures that help no one like the stop snitching movement.

So where are we now? Communities building makeshift shrines, "non-violent" demonstrations and the understanding that when our children leave home today there's no guarantee they'll return safely.

How can you agree with everything, when it clearly shows teen pregnancy and murder rate are lower? There's more media coverage of every incident of police shooting these days, but look at the black murder rate in the 90s:eek:

It is all about getting off of the plantation for blacks. You can be a successful slave. But the goal should be to get off of the plantation. Something elijah was showing us. Elijah was a sign that someone is about to do it and major changes are about to take place exposing falsehood and the curses and spells that have controlled the masses for generations.

I know battymanism has changed in the black community ten fold. To see two trannies walk across Linden and Penn in Bklyn in broad daylight, I almost crashed while driving.

Because of social media, got black people dry snitchin' on they own damn selves.

Used to also be, a chick would have on a bikini in a magazine and nucca's would buy the hell out of that. She then made money off appearances, hosting parties. Nowadays, chick's are completely naked on IG and not making one red cent. Well they may get a trip to Dubai...

The clear difference today is we as a people are more reactionary and less proactive.

we wait until something happens and then we are outraged for a week or two and then we go back to being complacent until the next something happens.

Nobody is trying to do anything to shape policy we aren't as active in our own communities. We talk about non violent protests and pretend that is all that was being done simply because those that say shit like that didn't live in those times.

We vote every 4 years for president and then sit back and complain about nothing being done.We are absent during local elections and have no input in our own day to day lives.

Then we wait for another killing so we can again be outraged for a week or two.

Figures can be fixed to accomplish whatever results the originator wants. This applies to polls and even in boardrooms. Besides I listed my more pressing concerns.

With all the other factors plaguing our communities teen pregnancy wasn't even an afterthought when I responded. But is that the only positive we can brag about? I'm not knocking it but in 25 years is this all we've got.

Presently our women are increasingly marrying outside our race. We've got serious issues to address and it needs to happen now.

but there is no evidence of a fix here, and you havent provided any evidence that the opposite is true.

saying things are happening IS NOT EVIDENCE of them happening more or less than they have been historically.

some of us are living in a fantasy world that is not based on facts or figures, just anecdotes and emotions.

Crime is the lowest it's been in four decades. Teen pregnancy has plummeted. Hell, the black fertility rate across the board is below replacement levels.

I lived through the Crack era and laugh my ass off at people that talk about Chicago's 500 murders a year. Shit most major cities back then had 1500+ with some cities around 2200+ a year.

In the future, if it ever becomes possible, I hope one of my future progeny is the one that invents a time machine to send all of you back to the good ol' days many of you are nostalgic for. I'll stay my black ass right here in the present.

You have never taken an economics class.

But for all the rhetoric, they don't seem to understand that yes! The DeWhite is to blame! You cant just say, "We cant blame DeWhite anymore" an expect everything to automatically correct itself. The prison industrial complex and war on drugs has destroyed millions of black families. The damaged has been done!!
The reason young black kids are running wild and have no hope if because DeWhite denied their fathers equal opportunity, sent him to jail, made it hard for black fathers to have any kind of hop for supporting a family.

Yes parents should be setting the example for their kids but its kind of hard to do that when the father is in jail, has no hope of a decent job, or kids raising kids.

The damage is done!!

people have posted clear evidence that things ARE BETTER for us yet folks are still arguing the opposite with nary a fact to be seen.

:smh:

the 90's here in NOLa was the wild, wild west all over again.

nobody wants to relive those times.

before this thread gets outta hand, let's just say it's the best of times and some of the worst of times for black folks in this country

some metrics are down, others are up...new technologies changed the game, access to information is at an all time high...

early 80s thru 90s were indeed some of the worst times for us - i'd say the negative ramifications of that era are almost on par with some of the lasting effects of slavery & jim crow...

as a collective we still have a long way to go

The Crack period..................(murder, property loss, prison) that drug caused major damage to our people.

You're missing the point of her losing her morals by getting shitted on in Dubai, if that's what you meant

What does morals have to do with getting dedicated upon? Do you mean integrity? Either way, this conversation is about tanglible changes within the community.

Your not kidding about being absent during the mid term elections!! The mid term elections is how those crazy azz right wingers get into office!! And we wonder why our cities and towns are all fucked up!! Anyway, let's end the racist war on drugs and push hard to reform the justice system!!!

That has been Obama's target but does he have the votes to get it done..

Those who don't vote don't take any blame for that either ,they say he can just do it himself with executive order..

:smh::smh::smh::smh::smh:

they don't realize executive orders and temporary and far easier to change than laws..

Ronald Reagan war on drugs, from 1982 til the present day!! Has turn our community against each other!! It's going to take a generation or two, to get our ship back upright!!
