I'm curious, are these photos sold or do the chics pay you for making them a portfolio. I always see pics of these "urban models" and think ain't no one buying magazines anymore so how are they making money

Props on your studio. Did you buy any additional equipment before you opened your studio or did you have what you needed already?

Dat bitch in the black dress got some big ass tities. Props on the Studio. Good work.

Nice work. I'm planning to get back in the game this spring. I did 95% of my work in Detroit. I'm south right across the border in Ohio. Below is come of my shots from several years ago:

1) Congrats......but I know urban models ain't footing the bill there (I do photography for a living and agency represented). Like everyone else has said.....get an awesome retoucher. (your value will go out of the roof) and RENT THAT STUDIO OUT TO KEEP OVERHEAD DOWN (if you own it).

No way you making a solid profit charging this in Detroit.

2) http://wpmgdetroit.com/

GET A BETTER WEBSITE. YOUR SITE IS WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY TOO CLUTTERED and dated. WHAT THE HELL EXACTLY DO YOU SHOOT? (that's the question that should be answered when I arrive to the site) Right now it looks like you are all over the place. TWO separate sites one for video the other for still.

3) Why are you shooting with a Canon 60D on supposed spread work? Get the right gear (cash only) worry about space later (rent it, bill clientele for it)

4) That food photography is horrible on your IM feed. Why are you shooting portraits and food on a green screen?

There's several of us on here who do this stuff for a living (some retouch and others are shooters). I'm going to be straight up with you. Urban Models are the shit hole of photography. You're not going to make a lot doing it and you'll eventually flame out. FIND A NICHE that no one else is doing and you'll be ok

When I first started shooting in Detroit (early 2000's and I was the trend setter) I made some decent money. I would charge $150 for three looks. I would set up shoots over a two day period. I would have 7-10 individuals on Saturday and the same on Sunday. I paid a guy who lived in Troy $250 a day to use his studio all day. I still clear almost $2k over a two day period. That was before everyone started picking up a camera and using photoshop.

What messed the game up was people started shooting for free so it was hard to charged anymore and Detroit became saturated with so called photographers. The hating became really strong.

Since the saturation occurred I ventured to other cities. In a 4 week span I went to Chicago, Cleveland , Columbus and Cincinnati and made some decent money. I also hook up with two individuals in Indy (one white and the other black) that was attempting to start agencies. They paid me pretty good over two days to shoot their models.

Lastly, my rep was pretty good so individuals started flying in and driving to shoot with me. Checkout my site below:

No absolute way I would shoot anything for $150.00. I mainly shoot editorial now but I do the occasional headshot session and clock around $500.00 on 2 looks only. I just shot for a local business and did 2 portraits and cashed out 1500. People have to start looking at these factors 1) budgets 2) time 3) editing when dealing with people.

I have a separate Wedding Photography Business and shoot 8 - 10 weddings and average 4800 on each wedding. I know local togs who like to flaunt how they are doing 25-35 weddings at 1500-2000 then look crazy when I say go up in price scale back the number of weddings you do-you'll makes the same thing.

I feel what you are saying but I did that in the early 2000's while I was working on my skill set. Would I do that today, no. My plans in the very near future is to do weddings. I believe I will be very effective because of my style of shooting and direction.

Do you have any of your work online?

I'm trying to expand my business here (ATL) and I'm running into the same thing (too many folks shooting for free). I'd appreciate any tips as well...
