‘Variety’ Says Elvis Invented Rock, Twitter Sets It Straight

Someone over at Variety must be in hot water after a poorly-conceived tweet raised the ire of social media users on Independence Day. A message went out from the music magazine’s Twitter account that read “How Elvis invented rock ‘n’ roll 60 years ago.” Of course, anyone familiar with the likes of Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry, Ike Turner and Little Richard would disagree – and many did, creating the #Varietyheadlines to skewer the claim.

Before long, Variety released a statement:

The word “invented” in the original headline has stirred an angry response from some readers who argue that it diminishes the contributions of many African-American musicians. As the story notes, Presley and Phillips were greatly influenced by a range of musical styles and artists. Crediting a single “inventor” of rock ‘n’ roll is as hard as determining who invented television or the automobile, and the headline on this story was not meant to indicate an absolute in this regard. The July 5, 1954, recording session detailed here marked a turning point in musical history, but in deference to the concerns raised by readers we have adjusted the headline to better reflect the nuance of the story.

Gotta stay on these cacs, forever trying to rewrite history in their favor. 60 years from now they'll claim Rap was started by Rick Rubin.

The most overrated musician of all fucking time man :smh:

BTW, the cunt that wrote the article:

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p>A postscript on my Elvis anniversary story that has sparked much debate about who &quot;invented&quot; rock 'n' roll.
<a href="http://t.co/HEGShRafTe">http://t.co/HEGShRafTe</a></p>&mdash; Cynthia Littleton (@Variety_Cynthia) <a href="https://twitter.com/Variety_Cynthia/statuses/485770545313497089">July 6, 2014</a></blockquote>
<script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

Just changed the wording of the headline, and nothing in the story. Aside from white people that are into blues, most of them don't have a fucking clue just how much of modern music has been created and influenced by black musicians

Don't worry..60 years from now it will be how Em, Beastie Boys, Vanilla Ice, or some other white person invented Hip-Hop/rap.

It would officially be time for me to check out when that happens. My heart can't handle the thought of it man.

Yup..shits disgusting. It's a one way non reciprocal relationship. Kats think it's a new day where black and folk folk get along. We get along as long as they keep the advantage.:smh:

Twitter and the social media wave is powerful and reachers thousands if not millions by the second, minute, hour. Invest some time in spreading the truth laced with facts, so that our history can be rectified and/or preserved. But whatever we do, don't let them erase, ignore, rewrite, and forget us.

I love twitter for stuff like this ...this is the information age a lot of the revisionist history writers cant white wash the past with glory that lionizes them and subjugate us to a nonexistent role in history.

:lol::lol: this can't be real. Lemme go and verify this

oh yeah, no this is fake.

her IG name is not iggyazalPlus, TI is making mega bank off this bitch just like Dre is making mega bank of Eminem. If they take over hiphop and we take over executive positions, somehow I'm not mad about that
.

Going off topic here, but at one time I didn't see the value of Twitter. I thought it was a dumb concept with a dumb name. Over time though, whenever a story broke, I wanted to be able to get as much information, objective and opinion based, as possible. Before Twitter, you would find maybe a handful of articles repeating the same information. With Twitter, not only do you have articles, but you have opinions, pictures, videos available uncensored. Whenever something is happening, I go straight to Twitter.

Man if you listen to whites talk about Elvis you would swear Elvis invented air.

Probably the biggest hit Elvis had was Hound Dog. The song was first sang by Big Mama Thornton. Elvis sang the song a few years later. As for inventing rock don't believe that shit. If not for black people Elvis would've had no career. He copied our style.

:smh::smh:....White people have no shame.

How they can steal shit...music,land,culture...and then claim to find it,invent it or discover it:smh:

He wasn't the only one. There were about 10 other people, both black and white, that covered the song before Elvis got to it.

Elvis never even wanted to be a rock n' roll star. He set out to be a Dean Martin style crooner originally. He switched up his style for the sake of a record deal. Sun Records label head Sam Phillips heard him and the band parodying "That's Alright Mama" Amos and Andy style during a break in a recording session. He ordered them to record the single thinking it would sell. He was right!

This is why Elvis got into the Vegas lounge scene later on in his career. It's the direction he was trying to go in all along.

we cant have shit!
Buuda was black,
Christ was black,
etc etc

every great thing thing we ever did literrally gets primed over with white or its "forgotten" (pyramids)!

I don't even get all up and angry about this shit anymore.

Most Black People (especially YOUNG Blacks) could care less about Rock and Roll anyway. No matter how much you try to school them.

Many still think it's "WHITE PEOPLE'S MUSIC".

And if we cared so much, we would supporting the bands/artists to back it up.

Ok.
So I lied.
I still get all up and angry about this.
But not because of White People.
Some of US with historical sense know that deal already.
But more because of US and the reasons I exclaimed earlier.

And I actually like Elvis and his music.
Dude is an ICON.
But even he acknowledged in interviews eons ago, that he didn't "create" Rock and Roll. He gave that credit to Fats Domino long ago.

I'm telling y'all the ONLY way to counteract this bullshit is by getting into other genres of music.
Hip-Hop/Rap is fuckin' lowest common denominator music and DEAD!!!

We need to get our young into ALL the music we basically created.
Not all this shitty R&B, Rap that passes for Black Music today.

It's time now for Black kids to start playing instruments and taking various music genres back.

When are we going to start seeing the forest instead of just the trees already?
