Think about it. Jason Collins came out, and it seemed like he could be the first openly gay athlete in the major sports- only he was at the tail end of a garbage man career. He probably envisioned himself as the gay Jackie Robinson.
Then Michael Sam comes out, and he's a player who's going to get drafted and will play. It's been 'jason Collins who?' When the nba season began and even more now that Sam has come out- Sam being a guy who has more to lose and took more of a chance, and ultimately was the braver man.
Collins played for the nets. Lopez has been injured for a long time and now they sign Collins? I'd be willing to be he contacted the nets management first. They all get to go into the record books and the nets have their in their history in gay friendly New York.
