50 Cent Leaves Interscope, Takes G-Unit Records Independent

0x600.jpg

50 Cent is leaving Interscope, the Universal-backed label that launched him into superstardom, and will take his G-Unit Records independent. The Queens-born rapper has signed a worldwide distribution agreement with Caroline/Capitol/UMG, paving the way for the release of new album Animal Ambition on June 3rd.

The deal, announced through a press release from the label, marks the end of a period of uncertainty over when and where 50 Cent would drop his follow-up to 2009′s Before I Self Destruct, his most recent studio album. Despite clashes over the composition and timing of the new record over the past few years, Interscope had only kind words for him today.

“50 Cent is, and always will be, a marquee artist for us,” said Steve Berman, Vice Chairman of Interscope/Geffen/A&M. “We respect his decision to pursue this new venture and the next chapter in his career, and wish him nothing but the best. He will always be a part of our family.”

The same holds true for Eminem, a longtime mentor to 50 Cent.

“Both myself and Shady Records are grateful to have had the chance to play a part in 50′s career,” he said in the statement. “Shady simply would not be what it is without 50 Cent. I’ve developed a great friendship with 50 over the years, and that’s not going to change. We know 50 will have success in his new situation, and we remain supporters of both him and G-Unit.”

By going independent, 50 Cent has secured greater creative control of his music and his business, which have already combined to make him one of the five richest hip-hop acts in the world.

Much of his estimated $125 million net worth comes from non-musical ventures including SK Energy, SMS Audio and the remainder of his payout for the sale of his stake in Vitaminwater.

50 Cent hasn’t personally addressed the media on his departure from Interscope and new distribution deal yet, but FORBES has secured an exclusive interview to discuss the agreement and its impact with him later today.

Stay tuned for more.

his name and brand is established(even tho its not what it use to be) so going independent is smart cause he don't have to sell a shit load of records to make bread, i think he been planning on this for yrs

less hands in the pot, more creative control. too bad his music sucks these days. hes lost his commercial and crossover appeal but he could do good independent

I can't see how this would be a bad move. Dude probably doesn't NEED to put out another cd. In the event he does deem it necessary to make a release, he will control the direction and more of the $.

its a worldwide distribution deal so he could make more money. this kinda deals works for artists like 50.50 aint a platnum artist no more. but he can still sell between 300k - 500k worldwide. i dont think he got drop tho they wanted to talk interscope but i guess the money wasnt right as it should cause he aint poppin no more like that

He can sell Less Records DIGITALLY as an independent and still make the same money he made with Interscope/Shady/Aftermath.

Niggas don't like to read. Independent means more FREEDOM and dough

This poll question misses the point. With the indie deal he's lined up, 50 doesn't have to be a "top-selling MUSIC superstar again" to make the same (if not more) money as other the top-selling MUSIC superstars signed to predatory 306 major label deals. This is a smart move for 50 to bring his profits up, especially with his sales down.

G Unit was one of the few indies that knew talent. Except for Yayo and that r&b broad, all his artists had hits. Just dead that beef nonsense.

Just find talent and cameo the fuck out of it. Diddy style.

True it's like asking the question will Will Smith be a top selling rapper again.

When i ask this question I wonder if he will be able to transition to this independent model and due 'comparable' numbers...

which would be ASTRONOMICAL in comparison to the current cliate and sales.

(ESPECIALLY since he consistently shit on this idea...in his prime)

But we all see how Tech Nine been selling...Macklemore more recently and a better argument of ...what if Drake had went indie instead of signing with Cash Money???

I wonder is 50 Cent such a star now inside and outside music he may be able to go gold damn near platinum without the MACHINE behind him?

seems like he is making a power move to me

It's like hitting a nigga over the head and bodyslamming him....after he got the pin and 3 count on you. Hip Hop has moved on....nigga should have been fostering relationships with people to help get him through the drought instead of talking shit, beefing and going to war with everybody.

i dont see this as a "Damn" situation i see this as a man trying to build his own empire. Now if he can do it is another question.

I think 50 needs to find two or three good young artist to groom into something to help his label pop off.

Man this dude has made it. This shit should be non news. He barely even releases music now.

platnum will be hard but he can go gold. plus 50 can get a record label if he want like people said these labels giving 360 deals. on a major label 50 will def sell betweeen 200k or 300k atleast. thats how much most of these superstars are selling.

50 is a business man he has a lot going on. It's sad seeing rappers begging and pleading for a record deal he is not doing that. 50 will never be bankrupt or broke. He had his time as do all rappers. If you look at rappers from 8 years ago very few are still relevant or making money.

People dissing the move are shortsighted. When you grow and have your hands in many pots you never go broke. Tech 9 is a good example 50 has more money than most top rappers will ever see. Don't waste your time trying to be the man again just focus on the paper. Niggaz want fame over money and power that's why we don't have it.

Everyone has their time and then its gone, it happens to most major artist who make it. Take another entertainer for instance, Kevin Hart is on fire right now but it will come to an end eventually. It happens! He invested well and is filthy rich, not all artist can say that.

I think the label screwed his whole style.. They looking radio hits n shit. We need mixtape 50. 'Niggas lookin at me like i'm crazy. They shook. I don't give a shit who he shot in Red Hook'.

Where did you get "dropped" from? Clearly says he left... he's not going to pop regardless, but he left

Dude better make peace with Game or Ja Rule to get any sort of buzz, because Buck and Fat Joe didn't do it.

Right now, 50 is just a good interview.

Interscope didn't even want to drop his last album and let him leave...that tells you something.

Remember the last album he's owed them the past three years
