MOVIES ~ Any of ya'll seen any good (or shitty) movies in recent weeks/months? Post reviews, feedback, movie news, trailers, recommendations, etc ...

The Counselor was such a let down and i was so hyped up to see it after watching the HBO First Look.I love Ridley Scott's work and despite the box office receipts for The Counselor i hear 20th Century Fox is 100 % percent behind a sequel to Prometheus

Thanks for the intel re: the eventual Prometheus sequel. I still need to see the 1st one. The movie passes have been a bit quieter of late. Got my entries in for a few ROE (run-of-engagement) offerings at the moment though.

Thanks, Footloose. Thought of the thread a few years back for quick reviews on movies (new and old) and also for some of those titles people may not have heard of, or had been thinking about getting around to in recent months or years (and what others quickly thought of them) as a general reference point.

seen it in IMAX earlier..was a okay-at-best film even if it did at times remind me of

Burger - Thanks for the intel. A bit hesitant on Ender's Game for that reason. It's getting plenty of buzz online & on social media. Strong studio backing, etc.

Thor: The Dark World

Thor: The Dark World
is a step up from the first Thor film ,more seamless and without the creaks
of an origin or introduction to the world story.Chris Hemsworth as Thor has made the role his own,
i really cant see anyone in the near future portraying the Norse God.Tom Hiddleston as Loki has become
the cult MARVEL villain favorite.Stellan Skarsgård,and Kat Dennings provide some humorous moments.
The action sequences are fun,and engaging.

The downside of the film ,is it's main villain Christopher Eccleston as Malekith The ruler of the Dark Elves.
All i could think of was the weakest of the Star Trek vilains that were in the worst of the Star Trek films.
Even with all of the good things TTDW has going for it,i couldnt help but feel like i just watched a stepping stone
to the next Avenger's movie

Scale of 1-10 a 7½

Ender's Game

Ender's Game is one of the most interesting Sci-Fi films i have ever had the pleasure of watching .
Taking place in a dystopian future with multi layers of hierarchy in which children are trained to battle alien invaders
This time around the aliens are called the Formics. Asa Butterfield is great as Andrew "Ender" Wiggin.
He brings a great amount of intensity and vulnerabilityto the role.I really liked how the film and story
gives him the balance of being a great tactician but at times also being unsure of himself.
Harrison Ford is good as the intense and manipulative International Fleet's Colonel Graff.

The SFX are seamless and i applaud the producers for not going for the 3D money.
EG has some here and there predictable turns, but it takes all of the right elements from Lord of the Flies and
Starship Troopers to make a memorable film.

Thanks, JB.

Gonna watch Machete Kills soon. The movie screening wins have been a bit quieter here of late. Last flick I saw on the big screen was Gravity (3D).

Welcome HF it's funny as of late im getting passes for movies i really dont want to see

JB - One of the tricks we've learned in recent years is to just enter for anything and everything ... especially when they're playing at multiplexes ... and then go and check something else out instead once you're there. We just save our old 3D glasses from the past year or two ... so say we win tickets to some random-ass romantic comedy or drama ... we go and check out one of the major flicks instead. I.E. - the blockbusters & big-screen flix. I think we learned that after winning tix to 1 or 2 shitty-ass Katherine Heigl flicks. Or for instance winning passes to a Disney movie ... and going to see The Avengers (3D) instead. Shit ... 3D movies are $15 ahead per ticket here. Price is right @ $0.00 ... :) - on the flipside ... if we win tickets for a bomb-ass movie ... we go and see that one with the pack of folks. Been entering for movie passes and shit since 2002/2003, and for contests in general (all stuff) since 1999/2000.

This is so true but in the case of The Avengers when my brother and i saw it 3 weeks in advance security was so friggin tight plus it was 10 a.m in the morning they made sure we went directly to the theatre in which the film was showing they had the areas roped off and plus they hired extra security,it was actually pretty funny.

Yeah - some of the really early advance screenings are super funny. Security is so extreme. I went to see LINCOLN 3 weeks before it was released and they had 2 night-vision cats walking around in there, 2 massive security guards, and 3 people at a table outside. Went and saw THE HEAT earlier this year about 5 weeks early (not sure why so early) and they had it secured like it was pegged to be the biggest Oscar winner of the year  - as for when we saw The Avengers 3D ... we hung around in the hallway and then walked into The Avengers 3D (instead of Disney's Brave).

:yes::lol:

Oh yes i forgot all about the night vision two dudes that looked like SHIELD agents were walking up and down the aisles. They also had metal detectors, and we had to put our cell phones in ziploc bags that were stamped with a ticket number, and we didnt get back until the movie was over.

Yeah ... those Shield agent-types always crack us up. We were in line and I was talking to some chick before The Heat and said to her - "Why are they treating this thing like an Oscar winner? It's a comedy. Why are they screening it 5 weeks early? That's their fault. They should screen it the WEEK OF like most other films." - yeah ... the ziploc (or paper bags) ... occasionally they do that here too for peoples' cellphones. One of the homies flipped out on them for that. Took the cat to see the Captain America screening and he started barking on those muthafuckas. Funny seeing that too as he's 6'3", 330lbs and a former gangster ...

For about a month one of the theatres in my area had a few men and women walking around with FED jackets on in the theatre to make sure no one was taping, not sure if they were faking the funk or what. When they took the cell phones at the Avengers screening about 50 people said If you lose my cellphone you are going to have to pay blah blah blah andi will kick your ass

Lol @ the FED jackets. Yeah ... people would have to be really stupid to try and record at the screenings given all the presence there. Plus ... there are local reviewers (from newspapers / television) there at the events too ... and they're plenty aware of their surroundings, not to mention media types (and people from the studios too occasionally).

Our strategy now is to basically enter for everything. The blockbuster screenings are harder to win given their popularity ... so we just enter for anything (those aforementioned romantic comedies too) and if we win ... we just hope other, better films are playing, or if we don't want to line up with hundreds of other people, etc. Hell ... I've taken pops to a few flicks that he thought he would NOT like, but actually enjoyed. "I don't want to see The Raid: Redemption. It sounds dumb. Straight-to-video or something." After the movie ... his feedback?

"That was great! I'd easily give that one a strong 8/10 ... hardly a dull moment at all. Thanks!"

The Best Man Holiday

14 Years later the characters from The Best Man have enjoyed success, started families, and
stalls in their careers.Old attractions and mistrusts still linger.

The cast is great as we watch them clear out their characters various emotional cobwebs, sometimes
in extremely dramatic and comedic sequences.Director and writer Malcolm D. Lee goes for the heart
and the funnybone giving the film a near perfect balance.

Been there done that themes playout throughout the film and some turns are very predictable.,still
The Best Man Holiday hits the right notes and it definitely feels like a reunion of old friends and family
that the audience is a part of. Hopefully there wont be another 14 year wait before we see these highly likeable
characters on the big screen again.

Scale of 1-10 an 8 ½

All Is Lost

The most appealing thing about these solo triumph of the human spirit adventures are that the actors are able to pull off
and entertain although they are the only actors on screen for about 85% of the film.
In All Is Lost Robert Redford trumps fellow actors Tom Hanks (Cast Away) and Sandra Bullock(Gravity) by being the only actor
for 100 % of the film.I was with his character throughout every desperate moment, storms, injuries, and fish stealing sharks, despite
the character not having much of a backstory the audience is only provided with a brief voice over of a letter he writes.
Redford will definitely receive several award nominations.

Scale of 1-10 an 8 ½

Saw We're The Millers the other day. It had a good amount of predictable humor and cliches, but had some funny moments as well. Found the teenaged kid playing the "son" Kenny the funniest of all. Had the surprised look & Opie vibe going on. Funny shit. Singing along to TLC's "Waterfalls" on the radio (Left Eye's rap verse)? That shit right there

Won tickets to the screening of HOMEFRONT this coming Monday (new Jason Statham). Might check it out or pass off the passes (got a busy afternoon / early evening beforehand).

Watching Pacific Rim for the first time.......WOW.....this shit is awesome....

On a side note, clay died twice this week!

"he earned that blood"

Matt Schaub sucks....that is all

Outstanding Korean mafia type film with hints of The Departed and Godfather sprinkled in.
Great acting and musical score.
Currently on Netflix.

Edit:

Well i guess clay is just as hard to kill in a movie as he was in the show

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is far more entertaining and involving than the first film The Hunger Games
The extremely talented Jennifer Lawrence returns as Katniss Everdeen, shaken and haunted by memories and losses
in the games, she ,her family ,and district are still threatened by President Coriolanus Snow(Donald Sutherland, unflinchingly sinister)
She is forced to keep up the ruse of having a loving relationship with her co gamer Peeta Mellark(Josh Hutcherson ) who carries
his own emotional baggage from the games, and forced to go on a promotional victory tour, which further stirs up rebellious unrest
in the districts.

Lawrence effortlessly goes from loving woman,to fierce hunter and protector. The returning cast Liam Hemsworth as Gale Hawthorne
Woody Harrelson as Haymitch Abernathy,Elizabeth Banks as Effie Trinket,Lenny Kravitz as Cinna continue to play their parts to a T
The film gets a boost from some great additions that include :Philip Seymour Hoffman ,Jeffrey Wright ,Sam Claflin ,Jena Malone
and Amanda Plummer.

When the kill or be killed games begin again ,the scenes are brilliaintly paced and it is true edge of your seat entertainment.
The screenplay does suffer from some extremely convenient moments, but i cant deny as the film closes i wished that The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1
was hitting theatres a bit sooner.

Scale of 1-10 an 8½.

Thanks for the intel, JB. Some friends saw it yesterday too ^

Welcome HF . The staff at the theatre were completely overwhelmed by the crowds in the theatre,so much so they didnt even make anyone wait online to enter the theatre.Everyone was able to enter 45 minutes before showtime and no one was checking the ticket stubs
I guess they were short staffed or just didnt give a damn.

Wow - they are definitely doing big box office numbers. Which sites do you deal with for the contests in your area? Most of the main ones here in Canada are based over in Toronto (large market). The cool thing is that a number of them get updated regularly (for various markets across Canada for passes, dvds, blu-rays & prize packs).

Once in awhile i spot someone in front of the theatre giving out passes,or i go on fatwallet.com and they direct me to several sites giving out passes,an sometimes i receive emails from fandango about free movie screenings.

This was bugged out, good movie though

Apartment concierge Cesar (Luis Tosar) is a miserable person who believes he was born without the ability to be happy. As a result, he decides his mission is to make life hell for everyone around him. A majority of the tenants are easy to agitate, but Clara (Marta Etura) proves to be harder than the most. So Cesar goes to creepy extremes to make this young woman mentally breakdown. Things get even more complicated in this twisted relationship when her boyfriend, Marcos (Alberto San Juan), shows up.

Right on, brother. The handing out passes out front = dope. Fatwallet sounds cool too. The major market radio stations and newspapers are great too. Plenty of wins with them over the past 10 years. I like seeing the trends with movies too. Some studios heavily promote projects ... others hardly at all. It's cool when there will be 5 - 10 contests running for a movie, as you're pretty much guaranteed passes (blockbuster flicks) by entering a few.
