EXCLUSIVE Harlem coup d'état? Pastors unite against Rev. Al Sharpton, who they claim is nothing more than 'a personality' now

The prince of the pulpit may have a revolution on his hands.

Four upstart clergymen have invited more than 100 churches to knock Rev. Al Sharpton off his Harlem political throne.

Speak Out Say It Loud, headquartered at Mount Neboh Baptist Church on Adam Clayton Powell Blvd., is a new coalition of black ministers determined to create a unified African-American power base with citywide clout.

Mount Neboh pastor Johnnie Green, 51, said Sharpton has neglected black New York while pursuing national fame and acclaim.

“While (Sharpton) is jet-setting around the country, people are going to our churches saying they don’t have money to eat,” the Dallas native said. “People need somebody to fight for them.”

Green, along with pastors Carl Washington of New Mount Zion Baptist Church on W. 140th St., Kris Erskine of Bethany Baptist Church on W. 153rd St. and Patrick Young of First Baptist Church of East Elmhurst, Queens, has planned a large rally for Oct. 24 at Mount Neboh.

The group expects more than 1,500 supporters to attend.

Green and his allies argue that Sharpton has spent too much time plugging his new book, “The Rejected Stone,” and tending to his MSNBC show.

“Sharpton isn’t a community organizer. He’s a personality,” scoffed Raymond Blanchette, head bishop of the United Churches for Kingdom Building.

But the insurgent pastors may have a tough row to hoe.

“While (Sharpton) is jet-setting around the country, people are going to our churches saying they don’t have money to eat,” the Dallas native said. “People need somebody to fight for them.”

Al Sharpton, after all, is a tested political operator.

“We need to attack the issues, not each other,” Sharpton shot back. “If you want to be the big guy, be the big guy, be that. Don’t act like I’m not doing anything local. I am.”

The Brooklyn firebrand who burst onto the scene in 1986 is now a power broker courted by candidates who see him as a gatekeeper to minority communities.

For instance, Joe Lhota, the Republican mayoral nominee, had a private chat with Sharpton last month.

But Green was offended.

“Lhota is running to Al Sharpton like he is the leader of the black community. He’s not,” he fumed.

Sharpton said he continues to advocate for black New Yorkers on issues such as the NYPD’s controversial stop-and-frisk policy.

“I run a civil rights organization,” the firebrand said. “They’re not going to do what I do. ... I don’t run a church organization.”

But the Speak Out foursome insist the goal is not to rival Sharpton’s 22-year-old, Harlem-based National Action Network, but simply to urge Sharpton to stick to national issues while their coalition takes the lead on local problems.

“We are not hating on Al,” said Young, 49.

But a Harlem pastor who has ties to Sharpton wasn’t sure, questioning why he wasn’t invited to the Oct. 24 rally.

“If this is an anti-Sharpton rally, then it’s deeply troubling to me,” said Michael Waldron of First Corinthian Baptist Church.

These Pastors are 100% correct, but they have to put Rev. Sharpton into full prospective. Rev. Sharpton is the only one who has ever benefited from his so called "activism." Reverend Sharpton (in my opinion) is a “corporate” sponsored civil rights leader. Rev. Sharpton has a lucrative cable talk show and several lucrative “syndicated” radio talk shows. To put it bluntly, the Reverend Al Sharpton is a “millionaire” civil rights leader who used the tragedies in mostly poor Black communities to catapult himself into the lifestyle of an aristocrat. This is a “sin” against the poor people that trusted him to represent their interest. This is a man that sees no contradiction in demanding justice from corporate abuses (as he did in the Don Imus debacle) and peddling “penis” boosting pills for these same coporate interest on his radio shows. Every time a crises hits the Black community, the White political establishment calls Rev. Al in to calm the waters. Unemployment in New York City amongst Blacks is through the roof. Yet, Rev. Al takes funding from the likes of Mayor Bloomberg and Bill O'Reilly. Dr. King was in if for the people, Rev. Sharpton is in it for himself.

I don't particularly care for Sharpton, never have. I don't usually watch much of his MSNBC show because often times, to me at least, his logic and depth on topics appear lacking and I don't think he does a very good job, argument wise, when up against some of the right-wing heavy weights.

Sadly, however, we seem not to understand that leadership, like cream, will rise to the top; and that you don't have to sink someone else's ship, in order to float your own.

The Big 4, and their followers, need to take care of their business taking care of those who need them and leave Big Al to Big Al. The Big 4 will get their just rewards if their service is true and Big Al will receive his too if he is true. Neither should receive anything if they're just bloviating, attention whoring and crabbing.

I'm shocked anyone EVER took Sharpton seriously.

He's just Jesse Jackson in new packaging.

Four ignorant men, four hideously uninformed “pastors”. I’m not going to write a long post about Sharpton’s positive activities, even though I could since I’ve known him since high school, 1973.
Let’s just deal with the current MSNBC situation. How did he get there? Why would a white male conservative billionaire Brian L. Roberts the chairman and major shareholder of NBC/ MSNBC/ Comcast — hire the so-called “controversial” Al Sharpton, who had no previous broadcast television experience; —start him out with a $700,000 a year salary, which has since gone up —and have him as a fixture appearing on shows throughout the entire Comcast platform, “Meet the Press”, NBC Nightly News etc.?????
Comcast which now fully owns NBC Universal started with a 51% purchase in 2009. In 2009 Comcast stock was $14 a share, the company was worth $37,000,000,000 ($37 Billion). Comcast needed FCC approval in order to buy NBC. Comcast had a BIG problem. The Philadelphia based cable/ internet company’s record on the issue of diversity was HORRIBLE. There was a dramatic paucity of Blacks working at the company at an executive level and there was a dearth of Blacks “on-the-air” as well; especially considering the large Black population of Philadelphia. This horrible record in diversity (Blacks, Hispanics, Asians) and the fact that Obama was president, Holder was at justice, and the F.C.C. (Federal Communications Commission) was controlled by Democratic commissioners, which meant that the F.C.C. would NOT approve Comcast to buy NBC. In fact one of the F.C.C. commissioners was Congressman Jim Clyburn of South Carolina’s daughter;— Jim was third in line after Nancy Pelosi in Democratic leadership of the house, which democrats controlled. Comcast’s purchase of NBC was going to be denied.
Brian L. Roberts called Sharpton to see if he could help Comcast get the NBC purchase approved. To make a long story short and to not reveal information I’m privy to that is still “quiet” let’s just say that 90% of the Black & Hispanic personalities and contributors that you see on-the-air on MSNBC (Joy Reid, Michael Eric Dyson, Melissa Harris-Perry, Dr. Peterson, etc.) —and the Black & Hispanic executives & producers that YOU DON’T SEE behind the scenes, are there because of Sharpton’s negotiation. Comcast which was $14 dollars a share and worth $37 Billion in 2009 is now at $46 dollars a share and worth $122,000,000,000 ($122 Billion). Black people and the discussion of Black issues for more than 60 seconds were virtually invisible on television prior to the last few years at MSNBC. Remember how we all lamented the crap and 100% non-news that was on Bob (Big Pimping) Johnson's BET. The four small-time pastors should concentrate on their local churches and not make fools out of themselves talking about hungry parishioners somehow being connected with what Sharpton is doing. The criticism is idiotic. Want to help low income parishioners, why not buy and set up a supermarket in the hood like Wendell Pierce the actor from the show “The Wire” did. You can hire local people (create jobs) and feed people wholesale bought decent low cost food. Call Sharpton, he can help you get some government recovery money and/or 0% interest loans; or maybe a tax abatement from the city. I’ll bet these pastors never thought of that; why would they, they don’t know anything, they don’t know anything at all.
