Why Breaking Bad’s finale will disappoint—and we’re all to blame
On Sunday, at approximately 10:15 p.m., the internet will explode.

One day from now, at approximately 10:15 p.m., the internet will explode. That’s because it will be seconds after the credits roll on the final episode of AMC’s Breaking Bad, and everyone—no matter what the ending—will have something very important to say.
Will Walter White—the high school science teacher turned murderous meth kingpin—receive his moral comeuppance, or will he walk off into the New Mexico sunset? Will his scorned business partner Jesse finally see vengeance, or will he die at the hands of Walt’s new neo-Nazi buddies? Will Walter Jr. enjoy another delicious breakfast at the White household, or will he be doomed to walk the earth, Kwai Chang Caine style, forever searching for a satisfactory pancake? Whatever happens, it won’t make a difference, not really: for the millions watching at home and then immediately commenting online, there will be no entirely satisfactory conclusion.
Who can we blame for such a mess? Well, me, for starters, and the army of television recappers and commentators who make their livelihood dissecting creativity. In this era of highly scrutinized viewing—where every drama sparks a million words online, and at least twice as many GIFs—it’s become impossible for showrunners to stick the landing, to please each and every fan. Not when audiences blog, tweet, Tumbl and screen-capture episodes for posterity, each eager to be the first to slam or praise. And not when critics can expend thousands of words detailing why, exactly, an episode didn’t live up to the massive expectations they set for it, week after week, year after year.
It didn’t use to be this way. Only a decade ago, things were different—not better, necessarily, just different. Sunday nights, for instance, were far less stressful than they are now, for viewer and critic alike. When a TV drama reached its natural end—when all plots and/or contract negotiations had been explored—it received a few highly placed eulogies from the top newspapers and magazines, maybe 800 words a pop, and we all moved on. Sure, some of the more divisive finales—the fantastical St. Elsewhere bait-and-switch, the moral comeuppance of Seinfeld—sparked mild grumbling, but those who were still talking about it a week later were dismissed as water-cooler cranks. What else, everyone wondered, was on next?
Then, Television Without Pity picked up steam in the early aughts, and TV recaps—irresistible mini-essays coated in snark and layered with an oft-profound/disturbing level of attention to detail—became essential post-TV reading, a sort of syllabus for understanding, for truly experiencing, your favourite program. It became socially acceptable to obsess.
Flash forward a few years, and the landscape is now awash with TV recappers, small armies of quick typists and even quicker wits spilling words about what they—and you, yes you!—just experienced not an hour ago. On Sunday nights, after the prestige cable dramas typically air, the web can resemble a spoiler-fuelled traffic jam, with arguments rear-ending each other at a furious clip.
With this rise in quick-to-criticize TV recappers—from the hyper-detailed musings of The AV Club‘s Todd VanDerWerff to the bratty wit of Grantland‘s Andy Greenwald to the wise grandfatherly sage of them all, Alan Sepinwall—comes an inevitable sense of disappointment. The more columns you read (hell, even The New Republic is now in the game) and the more a show is dissected, the easier it is to detect flaws, to find imperfection. To be disappointed.
This isn’t to say such criticism is bad or unwanted—it’s impossible to tally how many excellent points have been made by Sepinwall and his ilk—it’s just hard to deny how the movement has changed the modern television landscape. It’s gotten to the point that no one showrunner could possibly secure each and every columnist’s wholesale seal of approval, to deliver so perfect a product that recappers will just set aside their keyboards after typing, “Yep, perfect. Nothing more to say here.” Everyone wants to be a unique voice, a contrarian.
As Breaking Bad nears its end Sept. 29, let’s all take a moment to think of series mastermind Vince Gilligan. No matter what he chooses to do—no matter which direction he throws Walt—he will never live up to our expectations, and we’ll make our disappointment known right here, online, where it will echo for weeks and years.
It will be the same problem Matthew Weiner faces in 2015, when Mad Men wraps up. Ditto Kurt Sutter for Sons of Anarchy, and Alan Ball for True Blood. Try as they might, their hour-long efforts to entertain will never satisfy, not when there are two dozen perfectly well-reasoned and expertly researched pieces arguing the exact opposite, all posted not 45 minutes after the show ends.
So here’s to you, Walter White. No matter what happens to you next Sunday, we’ll never forget you. Or stop complaining.

Several pages back a few of you (playahaitian i think) posted parallel scenes from Breaking Bad and the movie Reservoir Dogs and it got me thinking. What if those similarities are more than just coincidence and passing homage? What if the ending of RD foreshadows the ending to BB for us? Main characters on BB are Mr. White and Mr. Pinkman. Main characters on RD were Mr. White and Mr. Pink.
What if the characters ending parallel one another in some form or fashion. Without being too long winded, in RD Mr. White met his end via suicide by cop after killing someone who betrayed him, while Mr. Pink(man) escaped death only to end up going to jail.
Just something i found interesting...

This is in my top 10 favorite shows of all time and better than the Wire to me, just because the Wire did a season focused on the shipping yard and it wasn't as strong as the focus on the streets..but there were a couple of times where Walt went to his alter ego where realistically he wouldn't have. He would have never killed Mike that way just because he insulted him. Shit Mike pointed a gun point blank at him 2 or 3 times in the past and the only thing that saved him was Jessie. If he didn't do it then he would never have. Plus killing Mike didn't have shit to do with him getting the names or keeping him out of jail. He took the gun out of the bag..that shit was almost premeditated and at his core he is a soft ass family man that started out doing shit for his family. Many people want to feel that they can break bad, but for the most part they will only kill when absolutely necessary like he did with Gus..Gus had to go and he wasn't hands on with that shit. He used his science teacher mind because unlike him Gus was a business man and a real thug too. The whole thing is based on him cooking to stack money for his fam because he was sick and it ended up bringing his true self to life, which was the brilliant, greedy, and possibly ruthless business man that he was meant to be but sold it for 5 g's back in school.. but there's a big difference between a greedy ego driven business man and a killa gangster. But I could be wrong. Do you guys think that Walt...a middle aged cancer riddled science teacher could end up being the same as Gus? I mean Gus was a straight business man who could also slice a throat..and I think that was in him before he saw his lil bro killed. He wanted to cook drugs even though he already had a great chicken recipe. He wasn't forced into the shit.

You have not watched this whole series or you are fucked in the head. I too along with everyone else was a fan of Walt and pulling for him to pull this shit off. But Walt put the Empire business as he put it, first and that's why everybody had to turn their back on him. He went off the deep end. If he was putting Jessie first, he would have given him his 5 mil and let him be..and he definitely wouldn't have killed Mike when he knew how Jessie felt about him. If he was putting family first he would have changed coarse as soon as shit went left with Skylar or at least stopped after a couple of Million. The mission was to provide for the kids, not relive his youth and capture what he lost with Grey Matter. And the reason a lot of people hate Skylar is because she never saw shit from Walt's side in the very beginning ...a dying man risking his life to provide. Plus it appears to me she was just looking for any reason to fuck Ted and through her vows out with the quickness on some bullshit. I assume you are kidding because you said except Saul...shit he paid Saul, you think Saul gives a shit about him?
They killed Hank against his wishes, didn't kill Jesse when he wanted, and took his money, nah, they did Walt bad.

They kept Walt out of jail and got rid of Jesse to an extent....and Walt has 11 mil.....
But they still did the one thing that drives Walt insane: take away his value and protection for his family. His name is sullied and they took 80 million from him...Walt don't give a fuck about jail, he cares about his name...Theme of this season is Remember My Name...thats all that matters to Walt at this point
Skylar was thinking about the kids, not herself. So that's why some of her actions were the way they were. Hank didn't know shit about his rehab payments, so he's no hypocrite if that's what you are implying. And Walt shouldn't be the only one allowed an ego. Hank rose to be in charge and Walt has made a fool out of him. I guess he is putting his oath of law enforcement ahead of family...that's good or bad I guess depending on how you look at it, but Walt ain't his fucking blood anyway...You said Saul didn't turn his back on Walt, the point of the money was that Saul stayed loyal to money, not Walt. And no Walt didn't simply give Jessie his money and quit..that's what would have happened if he took his 5 mil and let Mike and Jessie get theirs too and then left the business rich...he held Jessie's money hostage to try and keep him cooking to feed his greed and keep his enterprise going which is why he wasn't putting family first. He only gave him the money when he no longer wanted to cook after Skylar made him see the light by showing him 80 million. That's wtf I'm talking about.

Yes he was, that's the first thing I thought when he discovered the shit about Walt. But it's not really even a fine line...it's a sea between lifting some shit and being a killer/drug kingpin.
