* Do you think this is a GOOD IDEA???

Roland Emmerich confirms that Will Smith will NOT be involved with the INDEPENDENCE DAY sequel!

Director, Roland Emmerich has confirmed that original INDEPENDENCE DAY star, Will Smith will not be back for the sequel that is now dated for July 3, 2015. He told NY Daily News,

"Will Smith can not come back because he's too expensive, but he'd also be too much of a marquee name, It would be too much."

He did give us a few hints though on who would return,

"We have like maybe half of the people that you know would know from the first film (in the script) and the other half people who are new,"

In the past both Bill Pullman and Jeff Goldblum have confirmed that they will have a role in the sequel, this has not been confirmed though by the studio or Emmerich.

He also confirmed that it will be a direct sequel,

“We're not doing a total reboot, we're doing something that's totally unusual”

I am not sure Fox would feel that Will Smith is “too much of a marquee name”.

I guess after the failure of AFTER EARTH, he has lost a little bit of his luster when it comes to the studio executives.

INDEPENDENCE DAY was the film that launched Smith to super-stardom and he obviously has no problem coming back for sequels, and he now needs a hit more than ever, so it’s a little surprising that he isn’t going to have a role with this.

Emmerich has previously said that he wants to make two sequels to INDEPENDENCE DAY, titled ID FOREVER: PART 1 and ID FOREVER: PART 2. No word yet if that is still the plan but if he is still planning that, you would think they would both have to be green-lit together, which would make this an even bigger risk.

There really isn’t any precedent for this, and Fox is taking a big chance on this, especially without Will Smith’s involvement. When I say there isn’t precedent, I can’t think of any blockbuster film that got its first sequel, twenty years later. Like Emmerich said, this isn’t going to be a reboot or a remake, this is going to be a sequel about the alien’s response to the original film.

We also found out that WHITE HOUSE DOWN and ZODIAC screenwriter, James Vanderbilt is currently re-writing the script to the INDEPENDENCE DAY sequel, although it is not a page one re-write.

I don’t know how it is going to work out or what the expectations are for this. But it is a little weird that the sequel is finally coming together and now we know it is going to be without its original star.

What do you guys think? Does the absence of Will Smith effect your anticipation for this film, one way or the other?

20 year gap between the first one and the sequel ??? not even Will Smith can save this one from being a complete flop

Man I assumed Will didn't want no part of that shit. Independance Day 2 I expected to go straight to dvd or netflix. I didn't think they were serious about that. When you make a sequel to a film doesn't the 1st one have to have replay value? Let's be for real....how many people watching ID like that? I've seen the bitch like twice max. Shit doesn't need Will in it. I mean its not like he's a superhero or nothing in the flick.

Will's blockbuster career started with Independence day.

Hell, he might need to take this one to repair his action cred. Just saying...

Roland doesn't want to take that paycut. He reportedly got $20 million up front and 20% of the gross from 2012. All-in-all when, it was all said and done, he walked away with around $100 million by some estimates.

No way a studio is giving up those numbers to two players on the same show. Somebody (probably both) both are gonna have to come off their quote. I guess Roland said, "fuck that, it ain't gone be me."

first one made 800,000,000 worldwide. plenty of people will watch a sequel.

Yea I didn't know it did that well that shit would do over a billion if it came out now. That being said, I think we've come so far with action films and Hollywood has become so filled with them that it wouldn't do nearly as well. It makes sense to go with someone else or even a unknown. At this point the name will get people to show up....

If i'm Will i'd want no part of that. Imagine if that shit flopped? You already got niggas questioning his box office star power with After Earth even though the bitch made 150 million and has M NIghts bullshit name attached to it.

 Ya'll wilding. Ya'll acting like Will is on Wesley Snipes status now. After Earth is at 150 million and counting.....I guess it didn't make 500 million but you can't make people watch bullshit but even then they still had 150 million dollar worth of people watch it.

I can't see what a sequel would be anyway, aliens attacking earth again? Will the president declare ANOTHER Independence Day??? Sounds like its gonna suck.

from the reports I've seen is that the first fleet that attacked Earth was an expeditionary fleet. When the main ship was destroyed, it sent out a distress signal to the main fleet. They travel through a wormhole that would equal out to 20 years our time.

IMO they shouldve just went the Stargate route and let Syfy make this into a series.. could even have spinoffs like that show did: one called ID4:Special Task Operations,or ID4:Mars Division, etc

It's crazy how Will give u winners for over 20 years and he has 1 movie that doesn't do well and it's like it's over for him smh, hell Brad Pitt, Tom Hanks etc have flop all the time and I've never heard anyone be like its over for them

his action cred needs no 'repair'. he got a long list of action hits and ONE questionable joint that was recent. THAT'S IT

Man I assumed Will didn't want no part of that shit. Independance Day 2 I expected to go straight to hard drive. I didn't think they were serious about that.:lol::lol:

independence day was never just about Will Smith. Now obviously since he's on another level today it would no doubt help the movie out. But i think they can do it without him considering the first one did well.

‘Independence Day 2’: If Jeff Goldblum’s in, Just Toss Will Smith and Let’s Get On With This

independence_day_goldblum_smith-e1412786656325.jpg

The world of sequels and threequels and squeakquels and prequels and biebquels that we’re currently living in is a terrible one. It’s a world that exists because we live in a lazy time, a time when anything that makes a decent amount of money needs to be duplicated. Nothing good can just happen and then end. Things only end once people are tired of them, which, when applied to relationships and marriage and ultimately divorce, is super dark. But, you know, welcome to Earth. Love it or leave it.

But with all things, there’s the occasional outlier. The exception to the rule. No, not something that’s original and will stay original — those days are gone. I mean a sequel that actually needs to happen. A sequel that no one should have any reservations about. Because in its current, rumored form, it’s shaping up to happen exactly the way it needs to happen.

A sequel like Independence Day 2, with Jeff Goldblum and (probably) without Will Smith.

While typing that anti–Will Smith sentence, my former self is attempting to strangle my current self lifeless with Zubaz pants, because my former self’s hero is Will Smith. My current self, however, has no idea who or what or how or to what extent the current Will Smith is. And my current self is concerned that Will Smith’s best role this decade has been the host of the 2012 Kids’ Choice Awards.

The Hollywood Reporter notes, “It remains unknown whether or not Will Smith will appear in the planned follow-up to 1996’s Independence Day (There are apparently two versions of the screenplay depending on whether or not he’s part of the project, although director Roland Emmerich has suggested that the actor is out of the movie’s price range these days).” When attempting to make a film, this kind of uncertainty must be stressful, especially when it revolves around someone like Will Smith. Which is why I have a suggestion. A very good suggestion.

Just move on. Throw away the screenplay with Will. You’re better off without him, Roland. I know Will’s a major part of your rise, but just move on. Because don’t forget — you have the king.

King Goldblum.

Apologies for what I’m about to do here:

Oops, wrong one, here we go.

From an interview with Time, here’s Goldblum on his prospects of being in the film:

I had a meeting and have been talking over the last several months or year with Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin, the producer, and they’ve been cooking up and say they have a part for me in what they hope will be a plan to make another one pretty soon.

Later, he described the progress of the film as “brewing,” which is a great sign. The subtle thing in this statement, however, is “they have a part for me.” He says it in a slightly offhand, modest manner, almost as if he’s making a mere cameo.

But Roland wouldn’t do that. Because Roland knows what to do.

What we know is that Bill Pullman is also back, reprising his role (presumably as the ex-president, because the film is picking up in real time). And that the plan is for two sequels to be made. And that, again, there’s probably no Will Smith in sight.

Which, again, is a good thing.

Because if you bring 2014 Will Smith along, then you have to give a role to Jaden. And then Jaden’s going to want to run social media for the film. And then Jaden and Willow are going to score the soundtrack with dolphin sounds. And then once shooting begins, Jaden’s going to be like, “I Am an Alien, Who Am I Even Fighting For.” And then Jaden’s going to be like “Open the Borders — I’m Bored, Let’s Skateboard. ” And then Jaden’s going to be like “No One Should Have to Pay to See This Movie in Theaters; If You Want to See It, Let Me Know, I’ll Send You a Link.” And then someone’s going to scold Jaden on set. And then Will’s going to step in and say that Jaden’s right. And then the whole Smith family is going to drop out of the film.

And this is all going to take place in the first four hours of filming.

You’re fine without Will, Roland. It’s so easy to make the public forget about him. You can solve it with one simple decision:

Cast Michael B. Jordan and keep it moving.

And yes, of course, Miles Teller plays Jordan’s co-hero. And yes, absolutely cast Goldblum as Teller’s father. And yes, they definitely need to rename Pennsylvania Avenue “Russell Casse Lane.” And without question, Tessa Thompson should play Jordan’s girlfriend. And yes, Teller’s boyfriend should be Zac Efron. AND WILL JEFF GOLDBLUM HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THAT RELATIONSHIP, ABSOLUTELY NOT. AND WILL THEY GET MARRIED UPON TELLER’S RETURN TO EARTH AFTER DEFEATING THE ALIENS, WITH PAPA GOLDBLUM OFFICIATING? ABSOLUTELY.

THAT AWKWARD MOMENT, I THINK NOT.

Just like that, Will Smith becomes Aunt Viv 1.

Will out. MBJ in. Dr. Ian Malcolm has a gay hero son who’s also really good at drumming.

Let’s make this movie.

Rush hour. Every one ate off that film.

Rejoice! INDEPENDENCE DAY 2 is officially happening!

independence-day-8_large.jpg

After almost 20 years of rumors and speculation, it seems we are now closer than we have ever been to getting the long awaited, INDEPENDENCE DAY sequel. Deadline is reporting, that Fox has officially given the green light to the film, with filming expected to begin in March 2015.

As previously reported, Will Smith will not be returning but director, Roland Emmerich will be. There is no word on which, if any other, original cast members will be returning as casting has not begun. (There was a previous rumor that Michael B. Jordan met with the filmmakers to discuss the lead role, which is rumored to be Will Smith's character's son. Again though, none of this has been confirmed.)

The green light is only for one film contrary to earlier rumors with the release date planned for June 26th, 2016. That is of course just in time for the original film’s 20th anniversary.

I know film sequels that come 20 years after the original don’t have a long and successful history (looking at you, BLUES BROTHERS 2000), but I still think this one will be a pretty big success for Fox. The original is still very highly regarded among disaster epics (which are still very popular) and plays on cable constantly. I wasn’t as big of a fan of the film as others in my generation but I am interested in what happens when the aliens return 20 years after the events of the first one and how the world has changed in those ensuing 20 years.
