[/B]Dominican immigrant Juan Rodriguez was the first non-Native American settler in Manhattan in 1613” (he’s the one standing with the pan).

The first immigrant to New York City has been identified by scholars at City University — and politicians at City Hall have already named a swath of upper Broadway in his honor.

Sailor-turned-merchant Juan Rodriguez arrived downtown in 1613 from his home on the island now known as the Dominican Republic, making him the first visitor to spend a night in Manhattan, researchers say.

He also became the first non-Indian to settle permanently in the city, the first Dominican resident, the first Latino and the first settler with African blood, according to the City University of New York’s Dominican Studies Institute.
“He was a very early predecessor of the large Dominican population that thrives in the city today,” said Institute Director Ramona Hernandez. “And his story belongs to the history of all New Yorkers.”

His name will soon be plastered in a mostly Dominican area along Broadway — from W. 159th St. in Washington Heights to W. 218th St. in Inwood — after Mayor Bloomberg on Tuesday signed a bill renaming the 59-block stretch “Juan Rodriguez Way.”
“The whole city — a city of hard-working immigrants, just like Juan — should know his story,” said Dominican-born City Councilman Ydanis Rodriguez, who represents the area and sponsored the bill.

“And it will: We’re already planning a big celebration for May, 2013, to mark the 400th anniversary of his arrival in New York.”
On Friday at 6 p.m., a panel of scholars will share their findings at a two-hour conference, hosted by the Institute, at City College, 160 Convent Ave. at 138th St. The event is free and open to the public.

It was 1613 when Santo Domingo native Rodriguez boarded the Dutch trading ship Jonge Tobias in the Caribbean and sailed into what is now New York Harbor.

Apparently, he liked what he saw on the virgin island of Manhattan because when the ship returned to its home port in Holland, Rodriguez stayed behind, equipped with 80 axes and hatchets to trade with the Indians.

Although explorer Henry Hudson had passed through on the Half Moon in 1609, heading north, up the river that now bears his name, Rodriguez was the first non-native to make the island his home, researchers found.

European residents didn’t arrive until 1614. That year, two other Dutch trading vessels returned, and a commercial row erupted between rival sea captains over the price Rodriguez was charging for his beaver pelts and who would profit from them and ship them home to Holland.

The dispute proved a blessing for historians: Ship logs, affidavits filed by angry captains and other archival records, discovered in Amsterdam and translated from the Dutch, provided the details of the Rodriguez saga.

His landfall in 1613 predates by 12 years the official founding of New Amsterdam by Dutch colonists, and by 13 years the purchase of Manhattan from the Indians by Peter Minuit.

The first Jewish settlers arrived from Brazil in 1654, and the British wrested control of the colony from the Dutch without bloodshed in 1664, renaming it New York.[/B]

The painting “The Disputation of St. Erasmus and St. Maurice” by Matthias Grünewald, dated 1523.

Saint Maurice was an Egyptian man from Thebes who was comfortable among many different “Pagan” peoples, the Romans, and the Christians of his time. He eventually became a Roman soldier and moved to Rome/Italy. He is sainted because he refused to harass Christians as he was ordered to do by the Romans.

He has been shown in art in Germany and northern Italy since at least the 1200’s.

He is now the patron saint of the 9th ward of New Orleans.

Elisabeth Welch, the American singer who introduced the “Charleston” on Broadway before becoming a superstar in England, in 1935. Born in Manhattan in 1904 to a Scottish-Irish mother and African American father, Ms. Welch was a favorite of iconic composers Noël Coward and Cole Porter. She was the first singer to popularize the classic Porter tune, “Love for Sale” and it would become a signature song in her career. She also introduced “Stormy Weather” to British audiences and would be so beloved there, she remained for the rest of her life. Ms. Welch, among other career highlights in her 70-year career, was nominated for a Tony award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical in 1986 at age 82, for her role in “Jerome Kern Goes to Hollywood.” Ms. Welch also starred in two films with Paul Robeson, “Song of Freedom” in 1936 and “Big Fella” in 1937. In the comment section, I am linking a fantastic short video (1:56) of Ms. Welch singing “Harlem in my Heart” from “Big Fella” and Mr. Robeson can be seen in the clip. At a young age, Gustav Badin (1750-1822, named Couschi at birth), was kidnapped, taken to Sweden and presented to Queen Louisa Ulrika of Prussia in 1757. Intrigued by the teachings of Rousseau, Louisa set out to teach Gustav how to read and write, and about Christianity and etiquette, as an experiment to see if a “morian” (Swedish for Moor) could be “civil.” Then he was allowed to make all his own choices, unlike her other children. He later pursued poetry, theatre and dance, and based on his extensive library of mostly French books, was well versed in the French language. Upon the death of Queen Louisa, it was Gustav whom she trusted with her personal files, perhaps to the dismay of her son. In his latter years, he married twice, owned two farms, and was an esteemed member of the Freemasons as well as the Swedish secret societies of Par Bricole, Svea Orden, and Timmermansorden.

Albert Einstein addressing students at Lincoln University, May 1946.

“There is ... a somber point in the social outlook of Americans ... Their sense of equality and human dignity is mainly limited to men of white skins. Even among these there are prejudices of which I as a Jew am dearly conscious; but they are unimportant in comparison with the attitude of ‘Whites’ toward their fellow-citizens of darker complexion, particularly toward Negroes. ... The more I feel an American, the more this situation pains me. I can escape the feeling of complicity in it only by speaking out.”

Joanne Little was acquitted of murder charges for the killing of a white jailer (August 14, 1974). The defense said she stabbed the jailer with an ice pick after he made sexual advances. Ms. Little was the first woman in United States history to be acquitted using the defense (she used deadly force to resist sexual assault). Her case also has become classic in legal circles as a pioneering instance of the application of scientific jury selection.

herbert_and_zelmyra_fisher__photo_credit_dl_anderson.jpg

Meet Herbert and Zelmyra Fisher of North Carolina. They have been married 85 years (86 in May) and hold the Guinness World Record for the longest marriage of a living couple and get this…. Zelmyra is 101 years old and Herbert is 104.

The happily married couple teamed up with twitter this Valentine’s Day to answer some relationship questions. Check out their take on finding love, getting through hard times and more. Good read.

1. What made you realize that you could spend the rest of your lives together? Were you scared at all?
H & Z: With each day that passed, our relationship was more solid and secure.Divorce was NEVER an option – or even a thought.

2. How did you know your spouse was the right one for you?
We grew up together & were best friends before we married. A friend is for life – our marriage has lasted a lifetime

3. Is there anything you would do differently after more than 80 years of marriage?
We wouldn’t change a thing. There’s no secret to our marriage, we just did what was needed for each other & our family.

4. What is your advice to someone who is trying to keep the faith that Mr. Right is really out there?

Zelmyra: Mine was just around the corner! He is never too far away, so keep the faith – when you meet him, you’ll know.

5. What was the best piece of marriage advice you ever received?
Respect, support & communicate with each other.Be faithful, honest & true.Love each other with ALL of your heart

6. What are the most important attributes of a good spouse?
Zelmyra: A hard worker & good provider. The 1920s were hard, but Herbert wanted & provided the best for us.I married a good man!

7. What does the pussy feel like nowadays?

Herbert: DRY!

8. You got married very young – how did u both manage to grow as individuals yet not grow apart as a couple?
“Everyone who plants a seed & harvests the crop celebrates together” We are individuals, but accomplish more together.

9. What is your fondest memory of your 85-year marriage?
Our legacy: 5 children, 10 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild.

10. Does communicating get easier with time? How do you keep your patience?
The children are grown, so we talk more now. We can enjoy our time on the porch or our rocking chairs – together.

11. How did you cope when you had to be physically separated for long periods of time?
Herbert: We were apart for 2 months when Z was hospitalized with our 5th child. It was the most difficult time of my life. Zelmyra’s mother helped me with the house and the other children, otherwise I would have lost my mind.

12. At the end of bad relationship day, what is the most important thing to remind yourselves?
Remember marriage is not a contest – never keep a score. God has put the two of you together on the same team to win

13. Is fighting important?
NEVER physically! Agree that it’s okay to disagree, & fight for what really matters. Learn to bend – not break!

14. What’s the one thing you have in common that transcends everything else?
We are both Christians & believe in God.Marriage is a commitment to the Lord.We pray with & for each other every day.
