Homophobic people likely to be repressing same-sex attraction: study

Often develop anti-gay attitudes after fighting their own desires

People who fear homosexuality the most are actually likely to have experienced an attraction to a member of the same sex, according to a new study.

Research, to be published this month in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, suggests that homophobes develop such anti-gay attitudes after repressing their own same-sex desires.

"Individuals who identify as straight but in psychological tests show a strong attraction to the same sex may be threatened by gays and lesbians because homosexuals remind them of similar tendencies within themselves," said Netta Weinstein, the study's lead author, according to Science Daily.

Four experiments went into the study, each involving about 160 college students in the United States and Germany. Researchers measured students' implicit and explicit sexual orientations by their responses in a split-second timed task, in which they were shown words and pictures on a computer screen and asked to label each as "gay" or "straight," and gauged their reactions. They also answered questions about their upbringing and families, and filled out questionnaires to assess their homophobia.

In addition to showing that homophobic participants were attracted to members of the same sex, findings showed that homophobic attitudes were most common in those who had been raised by authoritarian parents.

Students who had grown up with supportive and accepting parents were more in touch with their implicit sexual orientation.

"In a predominantly heterosexual society, 'know thyself' can be a challenge for many gay individuals," said Weinstein, according to Science Daily. "But in controlling and homophobic homes, embracing a minority sexual orientation can be terrifying."

The study could also shed light on high-profile cases of anti-gay political figures caught engaging in same-sex acts, the International Business Times reported, citing Ted Haggard and Glenn Murphy Jr. as examples.

I hope that this poll was done back in the 60s, why would ANYBODY waste money on what today is essentially common knowledge?!?

Not a surprise. Usually the one that yells the loudest has the most to hide.

Re: Homophobic people likely to be repressing same-sex attraction: study Read more:

Yeah I don't think this surprises too many people. Interestingly enough, makes me wonder about the "no homo" trend. Didn't Cam start that? I always wondered was he hiding something. According to a recent BGOL thread, he is.

As I've said for years, BGOL homophobes who are constantly screaming shit is gay are dry snitching on themselves. Maybe they'll STFU now.

Not surprised that people that go outta their way to down gay people are like that. But I'm sure there's a difference between homophibic and homo intolerant.

Yup, so f'in true!

When I was younger, I was a manager @ a fast food spot in LI, I had a good guy who worked for me that was gay.

I had another worker that was sooo homophobic that he wouldn't speak and tried not to work anywhere near the gay guy, would even roll his eyes when the guy walked past him.

Years later I ran into the guy's ex-girlfriend who also worked @ the store, I asked her about him since they both worked for me for over a year and were still together when I left, she told me that they split soon afterwards and that she, in fact, had actually just seen him just 2 months earlier @ a well-known GAY BAR!!!

I didn't even believe in homophobia until I seen some of the ridiculous things people on here call "gay". They definitely have some inner-demons they're tryna keep under wraps.

Not really. You can change the words, but the emotions behind the words are the same.

My brother used to call every gay dude a 'queen' and a 'faggot', and lo and behold like he NEEDED to point out that they were that way.

At the same time, be careful of these types of studies. While this is true in many cases, this article, and articles like this, is also trying to bully people into be more accepting of homosexuality.

Why would anyone need to be careful about studies? It's already pretty common knowledge. We didn't need an article to figure this one out. EVERY homophobic politician as well as minister ends up in some sort of gay scandal, it never fails. Ever seen American Beauty?

i think this is bullshit for the most part.

"homophobia" is a bullshit term.

straight people have an inherent distaste for homosexual behavior, and it has nothing to do with homosexual attraction.

it is a natural repulsion to homosexual flamboyance, antisocial behavior, sense of entitlement, and aggression.

the ONLY people willing to admit that they engage in the behavior i just mention are HOMOSEXUALS.

Beat me to it.This is bullshit and only serves to put a built in defense for homosexuality. If disliking homosexuality makes you a faggot than using that same logic, disliking Bestiality makes you want to fuck the family pet or disliking Necrophilia means you want to dig up dead bodies and fuck them. The media is consistently desensitizing us to faggotry with every TV show having a homo. The generation before us didn't tolerate homosexuality at all and are far less gay than our generation.According to this article all of our grandparents, great grandparents and great grandparents were gay.Stop falling for this bullshit bruthas.

I'm a straight guy. I have a "inherent distaste for homesexual behavior. You know how I express that distaste. I don't do homosexual behavior.

HOMOPHOBES however, feel like the PRESENCE of a gay person will make MORE gay people, which apparently would be a bad thing for some reason, and the recent headlines have mostly proven that those who speak LOUDEST against it, and try to RATIONALIZE their hatred for something that reall doesn't affect them AT ALL, turn out to be, guess what?

GAY.

you're overplaying it and exposing yourself.

It's not the DISLIKING, it's the extremity.

1. necrophilia involves and UNWILLING, dead person, which makes for a victim. In no way is this the same as 2 grown consenting adults loving one another.

2. If you come to this board, theres an extremely high chance that you don't have a problem with two WOMEN getting together, and its obvious to you why. They are two consenting adults. No victim, no crime.

Notice, we never have to debate on whether or not necrophilia is a bad thing. There are no necrophilia clubs, no OPEN necrophiliacs, no defense of it ever.

The more you people try to pay this, the more you expose yourselves.

What drives you to think about what someone else is doing all day?

I really don't get it. Well, the article kinda touches on it. Hit dogs will holler.

Yeah, there's a natural, that's weird reaction like people who get into dominatrix or cuckold swinging, but the over the top reaction to gay shit is usually some internal conflict. I mean I think swinging is gross and it makes me uncomfortable when I'm around someone who does, but I wouldn't lose any sleep over it. Mailboxpimp takes it to that level where you know he's got gay demons. If people would just treat the gay thing as what it is, another sexual lifestyle and not some genetic predisposition with a need to be studied and characterize, most people would be over it. Also Americans are just sexually repressed, which is why they hate other people sexual freedom.

but they don't do it out of fear they do it for money and political gain. You won't get a republican nomination being a open gay, and I am sure they were gay long before they ran for office

The KKK do not hate black because they are jealous, back when they started wtf did whites have to be jealous about black for? It was all hate because blacks were seen as subhuman

as i said, the study is bullshit for the most part.

it lays the foundation that ANY disliking for homosexual shenanigans is grounds for identifying a closet homosexual.

that sir, is bullshit.

and again, "homophobia" is a bullshit term for the MOST PART, as ANY dislike for homosexual behavior is deemed HOMOPHOBIA.

and having worked in an atmosphere where gay dudes ran amok, i can say with AUTHORITY that if you DO NOT ACT like a RAGING HATE MONGER, they will DECIDE you are COMPLICIT TO or PARTICIPATORY IN their shenanigans.

reality is far different from what studies like these tend to try to reflect.

so basically if you are a heterosexual male, and you have no gay shit anywhere on your netflix que, your internet browser history, no types of gay porn or anything

then you are secretly suppressing gay urges. :hmm:

You're kinda missing the point, not liking homosexuals or identifying homosexuals does not make you a homophobe, just like not being into scat flicks doesn't make you a "scataphobe", it's the absolute over the top behavior against something that does.

Do you google scat sites then travel to them to post your distaste of them?

I'm assuming no.

Homophobes actively seek out gay people and do whatever's in their power (and sometimes NOT in their power) to not only point them out, but to make their lives miserable and even perhaps destroy them, if possible.

There are some people who are just over-zealous in the things they do, but is anybody's life so perfect that they can spend time and energy to inflict pain on someone else that has absolutely NOTHING to do with you?!?

No actually, quite the opposite, if you are a heterosexual male why would/should you be concerned with what goes on in a gay man's bedroom?

You don't care what goes on in the next hetero man's bedroom, do you?
