Self-defense is a "what if" scenario. Someone comes up and lays a right hook to your face, WHAT IF you let them hit you again. Someone comes into your home and is running to you in an aggressive manner, WHAT IF you stand there and do nothing. You start defending yourself against your attackers, WHAT IF they get up? Do they flee? Do they look for weapons? Do they just keep coming with the attack?
When in self-defense mode, there are a bunch of things racing through your head. The bottom line is that they jumped the counter. Fuck whatever happened to the thugs after that. Thugs should be incapacitated until police arrive(which can take forever).
This is akin to robbers trying to rob the Mcdonald's. Someone produces a weapon and hold the robbers until police arrive. Does the dumb ass prosecutor charge the "hero" with kidnapping and other crimes?

There is no sense in having an arguement with someon that refuses to acknowledge: fight or flight response, and that he could have suffered serious bodily harm and death.
It's like arguing with a republican and he refuses to acknowledge how they are the ones that lead us into this finacial crisis.
Or arguing with a student about why he failed ad he isn't acknowledging that he didn't study.
We all live our life in if's....we have a gun becase if shit pops off.
We wear seat belts becase if we crash....
