Its not dying its just changing. Its not just HipHop but the entire music industry. This is the digital age. HipHop catches it harder because of the buying habits of its core audience.

People buy what they perceive as value and that should be rewarded. Can you really say that most of the rap acts listed deserve purchase. The reason why LMFAO is selling like they are is because its a fun record and makes people, all be it white people happy. As of late rap has been still bitch ho, young money on every track, its getting old really fucking quick. They treat the music as a commodity, not art to be appreciated. Change that mindset and change your sales. Look at Adele. Based on the sales of the 2nd album, people went back and bought the 1st. Even Watch The Throne is still selling strong.

a few years ago when sales started declining rappers started talkn about how much money they get through ringtones and shyt. point blank the labels still own the majority of the music so whether it be cd, ringtone, itunes or whatever the label still gets the biggest cut, even with digital sales artist aren't selling very much, so subtract that little digital sell money from their advances, balling life style and several other things and their making less than they were 5 or 6 years ago.

such a bad misconception mrcmd. Back in the day you could make money on indie labels but now many indie artist have like 3 prints on their cds so majors still getting hunks of their profits. Also Death Row, Cash Money, No Limit, Rap a lot--all started as indie labels and you see how many artist they ripped off right? Most mainstream indie rap labels are owned by drug dealers or at least heavily funded by dealers with hustle mentalities so the artist are still getting the bad end of the deal. Now a days indie labels are just as crooked as the majors and often times the majors still play a role especially when the artist is ready to go nationwide.

Record label money got so bad, many labels are now getting portions of concert money, own artist websites, etc....

Who believes a nga who isn't on Jay Z, Lil Wayne type level is getting 40k a show? And the show is at a club that can only hold 500 to 1,000 people before the fire marshall intervenes. Then when touring you have several people to pay, you can spend thousands in travel expenses a week, tour buses/vans are often fronted by the label or drug dealers, maintenance and gas can get very expensive if you own it, if your renting that can be very expensive in itself. I could go on, the game is really fkd up right now, if your in it and selling 100k and up you can ride nice whips and shyt, u get lots of hookups, but you can easily not have nothing.

We know internet downloads have hurt sales but we really need MTV and BET to start playing videos again. Also all these indie labels have really hurt shyt.

rappers get shows. say u get paid 15,000 and u do 2 to 3 shows a month. or u go on a 10-15 city tour. thats decent money
