Desktop Editor/Designer - Seattle Sonics & Storm (Seattle, WA)


A key objective of the graphic design department and the public relations department is to support all internal departments’ needs for art, design and editorial content using central brands and themes established for both the Seattle Sonics and the Seattle Storm basketball teams.
The Desktop Editor/Designer’s primary responsibility is to manage the full-color, magazine-style Sonics game-day program (distributed in-arena for Sonics home games) and showcase the Sonics brand and team image, player photography, state-of-the-art page layout, cutting-edge display ad design, player rosters and player profiles.

SPECIFIC JOB RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

• Oversees editorial and layout of 80+ page, full-color magazine-style Sonics game-day programs

• Designs page-layouts and manages the production of the Sonics game-day program

• Edits copy, writes supportive content, selects and color-corrects photos for publication

• Participates in occasional art direction of players and additional subject matter during photo shoots

• Designs display ads when requested by advertisers

• Manages content assignments with freelance writers and photographers

• Oversees and fulfills manifests, production calendars, internal deadlines and print schedules of publication in the areas of editorial content and ad placement

• Communicates with outside print vendors, relaying detailed specifications, and implements quality standards in print reproduction

• Fulfills key role in maintaining print budget

• Demonstrates creative approaches to problem solving

• Executes proofing and presschecking of each print piece

• Serves as an authority in regards to logo usage, graphic standards, etc. Oversees outside advertisers’ use of Sonics logos and enforces the organization’s established rules of usage

• Ensures all deadlines are met from concept to delivery

• Works on multiple aspects of the publication simultaneously

• Exhibits the ability to work under pressure in a dynamic, fast-paced environment

• Displays an awareness of new design trends, techniques and technologies

• Performs additional responsibilities as needed

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

• Excellent design and editorial acumen

• Exceptional verbal, written and editing skills

• Ability to be progressive, organized and energetic throughout the creative process

• Strong communication skills and a history working successfully in a team environment

• Detail-oriented, especially under deadline pressure

• Highly organized and efficient with time

• Positive attitude and flexible personality when dealing with colleagues, outside vendors and the NBA calendar

• Ability to navigate an ongoing print budget

• Detailed knowledge of software including Freehand or Illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop

• Two to five years of experience in professional desktop publishing, newspaper/magazine pagination or related work experience required

This is a full-time, exempt position reporting to the in-house Art Director. Full Sonics & Storm employee benefits package. Salary DOE.
