WASHINGTON — As moviegoers across the nation watched the end of the world with the opening of "2012" last week, news of Earth's demise spread quickly across the Web. Scientists, fed up with the misleading prophecies, quickly set the record straight with their own series of articles and a YouTube video.

In the past, the scientific community hasn't responded to apocalyptic visions and just waited for the end-of-the-world storm to pass, said Don Yeomans, a senior research scientist at NASA.

For instance, the Y2K scare leading up to the year 2000 paralyzed many with fears that computers and electronic equipment couldn't make the transition to the new century. People stockpiled bottled water and canned food to prepare for what became a non-event.

With "2012," however, it quickly became evident on the Internet that there were a number of misinformed people and that the disaster scenarios were multiplying, he said.

This time, members of the scientific community decided they needed to step in and let the science do the talking. So NASA posted a series of responses on its site to the many rumors in the film, addressing the misconceptions one by one, and also posted a YouTube video.

Bob Waxman, the author of "2012: The Ultimate Meaning," said his book also attempts to dispel the myths.

"The book tells the truth about 2012," he said. "There is so much propaganda out there. The Earth's crust is going to crack and cause volcanoes and Earthquakes, and supposed solar that are going to heat up the inner core; a planet that no one has ever seen (is going to crash into us); every possible way to destroy the Earth is in the movie."

The release date of his book — Dec. 21, 2009 — plays into the "2012" movie theme, however. It's exactly three years before the supposed doomsday.

NASA's Yeomans said that movie producers played into the hysteria, creating an Institute for Human Continuity Web site and even allowing users to vote for the leader of the new world.

"Normally, folks would think this is nonsense, but its Internet life was building," he said.

Another popular theory explored in the movie includes a planet named Niburu crashing into the Earth.

In fact, no such planet exists, Yeomans said.

The catastrophe initially was predicted for May 2003, but when no such event occurred, the end of the world was postponed to December 2012.

Yeomans said he isn't sure that there's anything scientifically correct in the movie because he hasn't yet seen it.

He and other scientists hope, however, that accurate information from trusted experts will stop end-of-the-world rumors from spreading further.

"We are not movie critics," said NASA spokesman Dwayne Brown. "Our duty is to give the science fact, not the science fiction."

NASA Crushes 2012 Mayan Apocalypse Claims

The agency's Near-Earth Objects Program head points out many fallacies,

Scientists at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory have put out a new video to address false claims about the "Mayan apocalypse," a non-event that some people believe will bring the world to an end on Dec. 21.

In the video, which was posted online Wednesday (Mar. 7), Don Yeomans, head of the Near-Earth Objects Program Office at NASA/JPL, explains away many of the most frequently cited doomsday scenarios. [See video]

Addressing the belief that the calendar used by the ancient Mayan civilization comes to a sudden end in December 2012, and that this will coincide with a cataclysmic, world-ending event, Yeomans said: "Their calendar does not end on December 21, 2012; it's just the end of the cycle and the beginning of a new one. It's just like on December 31, our calendar comes to an end, but a new calendar begins on January 1."

Yeomans also attempted to allay fears regarding potential causes of a Mayan apocalypse, including Nibiru, an imaginary planet that some people think is swinging in from the outer solar system just in time to collide with Earth in December. "This enormous planet is supposed to be coming toward Earth, but if it were, we would have seen it long ago. And if it were invisible somehow, we would have seen the [gravitational] effects of this planet on neighboring planets. Thousands of astronomers who scan the sky on a daily basis have not seen this," he said. [Believers In Mysterious Planet Nibiru Await Earth's End]

He added that there is zero possibility of a NASA cover-up. "Can you imagine thousands of astronomers who observe the skies on a daily basis keeping the same secret from the public for several years?"

As for solar flares, Yeomans explained that these do exist — in fact, two massive solar flares erupted just days ago, sending bursts of solar radiation into space — but they are part of the sun's normal 11-year cycle. Radiation from solar flares can damage orbiting satellites, but Earth's magnetosphere shields its inhabitants from the blasts, and the flares are not a health concern.

"Then we have planetary alignments," Yeomans said. Some doomsayers believe the other planets and the sun will align with the Earth in December and cause catastrophic tidal effects. "Well, first of all, there are no planetary alignments in December of 2012, and even if there were, there are no tidal effects on the Earth as a result. The only two bodies in the solar system that can affect the Earth's tides are the moon, which is very close, and the sun, which is massive and also fairly close. But the other planets have a negligible effect on the Earth."

(Incidentally, it is perfectly normal for the sun and moon to align, bolstering each other's gravitational pulls on Earth and generating higher-than-normal ocean tides. This happens twice each month.)

Addressing the claim that Earth's axes are going to shift on Dec. 21, 2012, he said: "The rotation axis can't shift because the orbit of the moon around the Earth stabilizes it and doesn't allow it to shift." He noted that the magnetic field does shift every half-million years or so, but "there's no evidence it's going to happen in December, and even if it were to be shifting, it takes thousands of years to do so. And even if it did shift, it's not going to cause a problem on the Earth apart from the fact that we're going to have to recalibrate our compasses." [What If Earth's Magnetic Poles Flip?]

Invoking the astronomer Carl Sagan's famous maxim, he said: "Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. Since the beginning of time there have been literally hundreds of thousands of predictions for the end of the world, and we're still here."

I don't consider that cultish.

nothing but another doomsday cult. Total bullshit. Peeps want to believe anything except the facts in front of them. Sad.

what exactly are you going to do when nothing out of the ordinary, in the context of history, happens in 2012?

Are you just going to move on to the next belief thats promoted like the planet will be knocked off its axis in 2047?

At what point do you pay attention to useful things?

Maya calendar workshop
documents time beyond 2012

120509-coslog-xultun2-7p.photoblog500.jpg

Boston University archaeologist William Saturno carefully uncovers art and writings left by
the Maya some 1,200 years ago. The art and other symbols on the walls may have been
records kept by a scribe, Saturno theorizes. Saturno's excavation and documentation of
the house were supported by the National Geographic Society.

Archaeologists have found a stunning array of 1,200-year-old Maya paintings in a room that appears to have been a workshop for calendar scribes and priests, with numerical markings on the wall that <SPAN style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #ffff00">denote intervals of time well beyond the controversial cycle that runs out this December</span>.

For years, prophets of doom have been saying that we're in for an apocalypse on Dec. 21, 2012, because that marks the end of the Maya "Long Count" calendar, which was based on a cycle of 13 intervals known as "baktuns," each lasting 144,000 days. But the researchers behind the latest find, detailed in the journal Science and an upcoming issue of National Geographic, say the writing on the wall runs counter to that bogus belief.

<SPAN style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #ffff00">"It's very clear that the 2012 date, while important as Baktun 13, was turning the page," David Stuart, an expert on Maya hieroglyphs at the University of Texas at Austin, told reporters today. "Baktun 14 was going to be coming, and Baktun 15 and Baktun 16. ... The Maya calendar is going to keep going, and keep going for billions, trillions, octillions of years into the future."</span>

The current focus of the research project, led by Boston University's William Saturno, is a 6-by-6-foot room situated beneath a mound at the Xultun archaeological site in Guatemala's Peten region. Maxwell Chamberlain, a BU student participating in the excavations there, happened to notice a poorly preserved wall protruding from a trench that was previously dug by looters, with the hints of a painting on the plaster.

Saturno said he didn't think there'd be much to the wall, but "I felt we had a responsibility to find out at the very least how large this room was."

When archaeologists worked their way into the mound, they were amazed to find that it was a richly decorated room from the Classic Maya period, dating back to roughly the year 800. One niche was adorned with the faded picture of a Maya king, wearing a blue-feathered headdress and holding a white scepter. The picture of a scribe holding a stylus, perhaps the son or brother of the king, was painted nearby with the label "Younger Brother Obsidian." Another wall showed a row of three stylized black figures, with one bearing the hieroglyphic name "Older Brother Obsidian."
