HONG KONG — In China’s first modern deployment of battle-ready warships beyond the Pacific, a naval task force set out Friday to begin escorts and patrols in the pirate-infested Gulf of Aden, state media reported.

A supply ship and two destroyers — the Wuhan and the Haikou — departed from Sanya, on Hainan island, carrying a total crew of about 800, according to Xinhua, the official Chinese news agency..............Full Story http://www.nytimes.com/2008/12/26/world/asia/26china.html?_r=1&ref=world

In January '08 America owed China an estimated $1.4 trillion, and that number grows by the day (learn about it http://www.theatlantic.com/doc/200801/fallows-chinese-dollars) Its kind of hard to run up on your big Homey when he's holding all the chips and the keys to get home.

I won't go so far as to concede the hegemony of the world to China yet. But I will suggest that "the deciders" decisions coupled with corporate indifference have definitely placed Americans on the path to serfdom. Specifically why we needed change....

video - http://tube.thayard.net/media/1313/Chinese_Warships_Set_Sail_for_Pirate_Fight/

I heard somewhere that the pirates are actually attempting to prevent unregulated fishing and other crimes committed by foreign vessels attempting to steal the natural resources of their waters & lands. Hired by local warlords because there exist no navy's or coast guards to protect their interest.

Pirates aside, the fact that the Chinese are deploying naval forces far from their shores is a notable event, alone and in and of itself. Before now, the Chinese Navy has largely been a coastal patrol/defense force -- but over the last 10 years, its been building capability at a fast pace. This deployment signals that the Chinese have stepped up its capability to becoming a "Blue Water" Navy capable now capable of being pesky in the sea lanes but, perhaps, in the future capable of interfering with, if not controlling, the sea lanes.

We're spending a lot of dollars in the Iraqi folly -- while the Chinese are putting to good use their earnings from the Wal Mart, etc., cash registers.

Good points Que. China seems to be asserting its or flexing its muscles a bit. And with the wealth and authority that the world have handed over via purchase power its only a natural progression. The danger is that things could always get ugly real quick, specially if they overstep the boundaries.

China is the most backward super power. What other super power has a mostly empoverished agrarian populace with a military that has never really done shit past its own borders in about 500 years?
China is dying to flex.
I dont give a fuck about Somali pirates so let them flex on them like the rest of the world is.

I think it matters because of the future implications not only of China as a nation-state and as a colonial influence in Africa but the shift in the balance of power in world politics...As bad as the U.S. is in terms of human rights issues or even environmental issues it's a million times better then China in comparison...Ask the Dalai Lama and Tibet ot the students at Tienanmen Square

Actually china has taken over several of its neighbors and been at war with almost all of them within the past 60 years.

China(and please don't leave out Russia) will further flex its muscle. This is just the beginning.

The beginning of what pray tell. Exactly what?

Every other post by you is this mystic vague ass prediction of . . . What??

WAR? DEATH, DESTRUCTION! WORST PARTS OF THE BOOK OF REVELATIONS! WEREWOLF BAR MITZVAHS! BOYS BECOMING MEN, MEN BECOMING WOLFS!!

How many anti-depressants are you on?

Worst than the evening news!

Those are all nations adjacent to China and which China argues (weakly) that are all original parts of China. China flexing on Tibet is not much of an accomplishment.
I dont consider any of what China has done in the past 60 years great military accomplishments. Do you? Besides maybe helping push back the US in N Korea. That took some doing.
The fact remains they are a superpower who hasn't really flexed globally in the same way the USSR/Russia, US or other 2nd tier powers have militarily. Economically theyve branched out. Their influence is a factor internationally. They are a nuclear power so they have their backbone but you can't be all of those things and not want to say to the world - "Hey we can kick your ass". You know what I mean?
