WHO warns Europe COVID death toll could exceed 2.2 million by March, and U.S. warns against travel to Germany and Denmark

White House says U.S. unlikely to lock down as several European countries consider that move

The World Health Organization warned Tuesday that Europe’s death toll from the coronavirus-borne illness COVID-19 could exceed 2 million by March, as cases have climbed to nearly 4,200 a day and the illness has become the No. 1 cause of death on the continent.

WHO European regional director Dr. Hans Kluge said Europe needs to take a “vaccine plus” approach to the crisis, meaning that people must not just get vaccinated or receive a booster dose if offered, but also continue to comply with the public safety measures recommended since early last year: wearing face masks in public, socially distancing or avoiding large indoor gatherings, and frequent hand washing.

“Today, the COVID-19 situation across Europe and Central Asia is very serious. We face a challenging winter ahead, but we should not be without hope, because all of us — governments, health authorities, individuals — can take decisive action to stabilize the pandemic,” Kluge said in a statement.

His comments come amid protests in several European countries at new measures to curb the spread of the virus that were reimposed after being dropped as countries reopened. The Netherlands, Denmark and Norway, for example, told their citizens they no longer needed to wear face masks in public when they reopened, a move they have now reversed amid a surge in new cases.

Kluge said the highly transmissible delta variant is to blame, along with the easing of those very measures, which sent the wrong message to people that the pandemic was close to an end.

“We can expect that there will be high or extreme stress on hospital beds in 25 countries, and high or extreme stress in intensive-care units in 49 out of 53 countries between now and 1 March 2022,” said the statement.

Recognizing the dire situation in Europe, the U.S. State Department has added Germany and Denmark to the list of countries it is advising Americans to avoid, because of COVID-19.

Germany’s health minister, Jens Spahn, gave an ominous warning Monday that by the end of winter, “pretty much everyone in Germany … will be vaccinated, cured or dead.”

The White House, meanwhile, has said the U.S. is unlikely to lock down again even though cases are still rising at an average clip of almost 94,000 a day, according to a New York Times tracker. Deaths continue to average more than 1,000 a day, too, and more than 50,000 people living in the U.S. are being hospitalized every day.

As most of the people affected are unvaccinated, it is crucial for that group to get their shots. White House coronavirus response coordinator Jeff Zients said at a Monday briefing that 82% of Americans have now had at least one shot of a vaccine.

However, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s vaccine tracker is showing that 196 million Americans are fully vaccinated, equal to just 59.2% of the overall population. That number has barely nudged higher in weeks and is still below the 70% threshold experts say is needed to stop the spread.

Zients said the government managed to achieve 95% compliance with its mandate that federal workers get their shots by a Monday deadline and that 90% are already vaccinated.

There are growing concerns that travel for the Thanksgiving holiday this week will lead to another rise in cases.

Elsewhere, Israel has started to vaccinate children aged 5 to 11 with the children’s version of the vaccine developed by Pfizer PFE and German partner BioNTech BNTX , the Times of Israel reported.

The prime minister of France, Jean Castex, has tested positive for COVID, after returning from a visit with ministers in Brussels, CNN reported. That means his Belgian counterpart, Alexander de Croo, and four other ministers have been forced to quarantine.

India recorded its smallest rise in new COVID cases in 543 days on Tuesday, Reuters reported. The improvement has come despite huge festival gatherings in recent weeks and is being attributed to a high vaccination rate and the presence of antibodies from prior infections.

Latest tallies

The global tally for the coronavirus-borne illness climbed above 258.4 million on Tuesday, while the death toll edged above 5.16 million, according to data aggregated by Johns Hopkins University.

The U.S. continues to lead the world with a total of 47.9 million cases and 772,440 deaths.

India is second by cases after the U.S. at 34.5 million and has suffered 466,147 deaths. Brazil has the second highest death toll at 612,782 and 22 million cases.

In Europe, Russia has recorded the most fatalities at 261,526, followed by the U.K. at 144,414.

China, where the virus was first discovered late in 2019, has had 111,011 confirmed cases and 4,809 deaths, according to its official numbers, which are widely held to be massively understated.

Reports: Pro MMA fighter arrested for allegedly stabbing, killing doctor after COVID-19 vaccine argument

By MMA Junkie Staff |
November 15, 2021 2:40 pm ET

A professional mixed martial artist has been arrested following an alleged argument-turned-killing in Guam.
Akmal Khozhiev, a 3-1 pro fighter, was arrested Nov. 7 by the Guam Police Department after allegedly stabbing and killing a doctor during a COVID-19 dispute in Tamuning, according to multiple reports from local news outlets including Pacific Daily News, KUAM News, Pacific News Center, and The Guam Daily Post.
At the time of publication, the Guam Police Department did not respond to MMA Junkie’s inquiries for comment.
Khozhiev, 27, faces charges of first-degree felony aggravated murder with a deadly weapon and second-degree aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Bail for Khozhiev was set at $1 million.
According to a witness, Khozhiev and Dr. Miran Ribati, a radiologist at Guam Memorial Hospital, engaged in an altercation at an apartment complex after a heated debate over the COVID-19 vaccine. The witness said the altercation got physical when Khozhiev choked Ribati unconscious and stabbed him in the throat with an animal bone from a meal the two had shared. Khozhiev allegedly then grabbed a knife and stabbed the doctor again.
Police responded to the scene where they reportedly found Ribati face down in a pool of his own blood. “Sir, it’s me, it’s me, I killed him,” Khozhiev reportedly told police
J.J. Ambrose, a veteran MMA fighter who competed for Bellator among other promotions, used to employ Khozhiev at Steel Athletics in Tamuning and said he was not surprised to hear about the violent altercation. Ribati, like Khozhiev trained for years at the gym.
“He was such a great person up until he wasn’t,” Ambrose told KUAM. “We did everything we possibly could to warn people that AK wasn’t AK anymore. … It’s very hard ’cause I know when you’re friends with two people and those two people are on the outs, you don’t want to take sides. You want to ride in the middle. But in this case, AK seriously needed help, and that was the problem – that people were not trying to take sides, and he seriously needed help this whole time.”
In a statement to Pacific Daily News, Guam Memorial Hospital praised Ribati for his dedication and skills as a physician.
“It is with a heavy, shocked and saddened heart that the Guam Memorial Hospital Authority shares the passing of one of its esteemed physicians, Dr. Miran Ribati. Dr. Ribati was an Interventional Radiologist at GMHA, serving the community for over three years. His talents were undeniable and impeccable; his passion unparalleled; his accolades from patients in droves. He will be sorely missed among colleagues, staff and the entire Guam healthcare community.”
Khozhiev is due to next appear in court Nov. 19.

We'll never go back into lockdown because of greed and the powers that be
And there is going to be our downfall especially especially with the white community they already took a big hit this summer they look like they are going to take a bigger hit this winter. I said this a week ago if they were to do another Census it would show the white population probably dropped another two or 3% in the past two years.

B.1.1.529 NEW HEAVILY MUTATED COVID variant found in South Africa
...... with more than 30 mutations in spike protein, immunity resistant

WHO meets to designate new variant, cautions against travel measures

  • WHO convenes experts meeting to assess B.1.1.529 variant
  • Cautions countries against imposing travel restrictions
  • "This is one to watch, I would say we have concern" - WHO expert
GENEVA, Nov 26 (Reuters) - The World Health Organisation (WHO) on Friday cautioned countries against hastily imposing travel restrictions linked to the new B.1.1.529 variant of COVID-19, saying they should take a "risk-based and scientific approach".

A closed-door experts' meeting from Geneva, convened by WHO, began at midday (1100 GMT) to assess the new COVID-19 variant B.1.1.529 and to designate it as either a variant of interest or a variant of concern, spokesperson Christian Lindmeier said.

Global authorities reacted with alarm on Friday to a new coronavirus variant detected in South Africa, with the EU and Britain among those tightening border controls as scientists sought to find out if the mutation was vaccine-resistant. L1N2SH089

"At this point, implementing travel measures is being cautioned against," Lindmeier told a U.N. briefing in Geneva. "The WHO recommends that countries continue to apply a risk-based and scientific approach when implementing travel measures."

It would take several weeks to determine the variant's transmissibility and the effectiveness of vaccines and therapeutics against it, he said, noting that 100 sequences of the variant have been reported so far.

People should continue to wear masks whenever possible, avoid large gatherings, ventilate rooms and maintain hand hygiene, Lindmeier added.

"We don't know very much about this yet. What we do know is that this variant has a large number of mutations. And the concern is when you have so many mutations it can have an impact on how the virus behaves," said Maria van Kerkhove, an epidemiologist and WHO technical lead on COVID-19.

"This is one to watch, I would say we have concern. But I think you would want us to have concern," she told viewers of an event on social media on Thursday.

Van Kerkhove said that it was good that variants were being detected, adding: "It means that we have a system in place."

Lindmeier said that the U.N. agency's technical advisory group and other experts on virus evolution were conferring with South African researchers.

I want to know the effectiveness of the current vaccines on this new variant.
I am reading from overseas publications that said the new variant is very resistant to the vaccines this is why some of those countries in Europe are going crazy right now.
