Women in Black History: First "immortal" cells came from a sista Henrietta Lacks

On Oct. 4, 1951, Henrietta Lacks died of cervical cancer at Johns Hopkins University Hospital in Baltimore. Poor and black, the daughter of tobacco pickers in rural Virginia, and mother of five, the 31-year-old woman might have died in obscurity, forgotten by all but her immediate family and friends.

But Henrietta Lacks will live forever - in laboratories and research centers worldwide that use her unique, immortal cells for medical research. The cells of her cancer, known as HeLa cells, were the first human cells discovered to thrive and multiply outside the body, seemingly forever, allowing researchers to conduct experiments previously impossible.

HeLa cells were instrumental in creating the polio vaccine and may, one day, help cure cancer. In what has become a billion-dollar industry, HeLa cells have traveled around the world and been shot into space.

Now that's deep. "Immortal" jumped out at me cuz I just saw a sci-fi flick where Horus came to earth for 7 days and was a pussyhound for this earth chic that was rare because she could mate with a God. Took over a dudes body and fucked her a couple times and left her with a kid.

Re: Women in Black History: First "immortal" cells came from a sista

Though it took three decades for the Geys to succeed with their efforts to create a human cell line, after their success with HeLa, culturing cells became suspiciously easy. Researchers cultivated tissue samples from their own bodies and the bodies of their families and patients. Most grew successfully. Sure, the samples struggled during the first few weeks, or even months, in culture, but then, suddenly, they flourished. Samples blossomed into full-blown healthy cell lines with the strength of, well, the HeLa cell.

In 1974, a researcher by the name of Walter Nelson-Rees started what everyone called a nasty rumor: HeLa cells, he claimed, had infiltrated the world's stock of cell cultures. No one wanted to believe him. For almost three decades researchers had done complex experiments on what they thought were breast cells, prostate cells, or placental cells, and suddenly, rumor had it they'd been working with HeLa cells all along. To believe this would be to believe that years of work and millions of dollars had, in essence, been wasted.

The truth was, Henrietta's cells had traveled through the air, on hands, or the tips of pipettes, overpowering any cell cultures they encountered. And researchers had no idea. There was no way to know which cells were growing in the petri dish. And there was no universally accepted test for a cell culture's identity. To accept or reject the theory that HeLa cells had taken over, researchers wanted more evidence. This required detailed information about the cells' source. But they knew only the barest facts about Henrietta: She was black, she was a woman, and she was dead.

Re: Women in Black History: First "immortal" cells came from a sista

a good read but not entirely true.
as a specialist in biology, there isn't a known cure for cancer.

since the cells were derived from cervical cancer as you stated,
this can only mean Henrietta was a loose woman.
i say this because any medical professional will and can tell you
where cervical cancer comes from.

the cause of cervical cancer is HPV (human papillomavirus), a sexually transmitted disease. the spotlight on ms. lacks is tarnished and is probably
best to speak of her around friends and family due to the sexual stereotypes of the black woman from the media.

furthermore, shouldnt such an article be on SOL instead of BGOL. HNIC blessed you women with your own web space and, for whatever reason, you are bringing all the women issues over here when HPV and cervical cancer does not concern a man. we cant contract such diseases so why would they be of utmost interest to us?

my source: http://www.cdc.gov/std/hpv/default.htmhttp://www.cdc.gov/std/hpv/default.htm

HPV is not the only cause of cervical cancer and doesn't always cause cervical cancer.

And how dare you disrespect someone who science has already and continually disrespected by stealing her cells to begin with and capitalizing on the research and medical advancement that theivery resulted in.

And read the thread. It says Women in BLACK HISTORY. That means it's important for all people especially those of color.

And just because someone is diagnosed with cervical cancer, doesn't mean she had a number of sexual partners even though that behavior increases the likelihood.

Your ignorance is ASTOUNDING.

more lies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

here is the truth:

"Ms. Lacks' situation was brought up in the Supreme Court of California case of John Moore v. the Regents of the University of California. The court ruled that a person's discarded tissue and cells are not their property and can be commercialized."

this same law applies to everyone today.

Hey 3rd-Day, if you know so much about Cancer / Medicine why don't you tell the rest of BGOL who Royal Raymond Rife was? Hhhmm?:hmm:

Some say he DISCOVERED THE CURE FOR CANCER (and MANY other 'incurable' diseases) back in the early 1940s. However, his ENTIRE LIFE'S WORK (including his laboratory, microscopes & notes) was destroyed, shortly after his death.

Rumor has it that a Big Pharm company was behind his death. His research was in DIRECT CONFLICT with their drug treatments, so they poisoned him, in order to hide any evidence of a cure, so that they could continue to make money off drugs that only *treat* the illness for years to come.:hmm:

Ever heard of him? I'm curious.
If not, maybe you should *google* him.

Excellent read. One of the reasons I love BGOL.

I'm sending this to all my email buddies.

The family needs a GOOD lawyer now.

3rd Day....I read the article from the John's Hopkins'paper...you do know about John's Hopkins don't you?

It never says there is a cure for cancer, does it?

A good lawyer would argue that her case is distinguashble from the one you posted because her tissue was not discarded.

Aborted fetuses, the source of embroyonic stem cells, are discarded tissue. The placenta from birth is discarded tissue.

The tissue that is still attached to my dead wife's body is not.
The tissue that is still attached to my live wife's body is not.

great info.

combine that with the FACT that black women have a strain of DNA found in all humans... proving that she is the QUEEN of this earth.

follow that up with the "Lucy" or "Eve" skeletal remains found in west africa PROVING that a black female was the first "human."

black people need to understand these FACTS.

Loose???

First off you should never tell anyone you went to college that may deter our younger generation from going in the future (hence you are a dumbass).:hmm:

Furthermore, where on God's green earth has it ever been spoken that you must be loose to contract an STD. You don't know if she was raped, contracted it from her child's father, molested or lets face it even had an STD to begin with. You can have cervical cancer without having HPV. HPV is to blame for most known cases of HPV but not all. There are many risk factors for cervical cancer.

Thirdly, how can you say this is a black woman's issue therefore should be posted on SOL not BGOL. Any issue that effects our community directly or indirectly affects yours. Men not connected to women? Who the hell do you think gave birth to your ass? Whoever it was I'm sure SHE asks God to forgive her for that sin everyday. You think because you keep saying your "book smart" people will believe you? You may have attended college but you were either kicked out or dropped out before you learned anything.

Re: Women in Black History: First "immortal" cells came from a sista

What is HPV?

HPV (human papillomavirus) is a sexually transmitted virus. It is passed on through genital contact (such as vaginal and anal sex). It is also passed on by skin-to-skin contact. At least 50% of people who have had sex will have HPV at some time in their lives.
Why haven't I heard of HPV?

HPV is not a new virus. But many people don't know about it. Most people don't have any signs. HPV may go away on its own-- without causing any health problems.
Who can get HPV?

Anyone who has ever had genital contact with another person may have HPV. Both men and women may get it -- and pass it on-- without knowing it. Since there might not be any signs, a person may have HPV even if years have passed since he or she had sex.
What makes a person more likely to get HPV?

Most people who have sex may get HPV. You are more likely to get HPV if you have:
  • sex at an early age,
  • many sex partners, or
  • a sex partner who has had many partners.
If there are no signs, why do I need to worry about HPV?

There are many kinds of HPV and not all of them cause health problems. Some kinds of HPV may cause problems like genital warts or cervical cancer. HPV types 16 and 18 cause about 70% of cervical cancers. HPV types 6 and 11 cause about 90% of genital warts.
Is there a cure for HPV?

There is no cure for the virus (HPV) itself. There are treatments for the health problems that HPV can cause, such as genital warts, cervical changes, and cervical cancer.
What should I know about genital warts?

There are many treatment choices for genital warts. But even after the warts are treated, the virus might still be there and may be passed on to others. If genital warts are not treated they may go away, stay the same, or increase in size or number, but they will not turn into cancer.
What should I know about cervical cancer?

All women should get regular Pap tests. The Pap test looks for cell changes caused by HPV. The test finds cell changes early -- so the cervix can be treated before the cells turn into cancer. This test also can also find cancer in its early stages so it can be treated before it becomes too serious. It is rare to die from cervical cancer if the disease is caught early.
Is there a test for HPV?

Yes. It tests for the kinds of HPV that may lead to cervical cancer. The FDA approved the HPV test to be used for women over 30 years old. It may find HPV even before there are changes to the cervix. Women who have the HPV test still need to get the Pap test.
Can I lower my chances of getting HPV?

  • You can choose not to have sex (abstinence).
  • If you have sex, you can limit the number of partners you have.
  • Choose a partner who has had no or few sex partners. The fewer partners your partner has had -- the less likely he or she is to have HPV.
  • It is not known how much condoms protect against HPV. Areas not covered by a condom can be exposed to the virus.
What is the HPV vaccine and how does it work?

The vaccine, called Gardasil, mimics the disease and creates resistance. It is NOT a live or a dead virus. It prevents infection with HPV types 6, 11, 16 and 18.
Is it safe?

Tests of the vaccine showed only minor problems. Some people had a slight fever. Others had redness or irritation on their skin where they got the shot.
Is it effective?

Gardasil is between 95-100% effective against HPV types 6, 11, 16, 18.
Who should get the HPV vaccine?

The FDA has approved Gardasil for girls and women ages 9-26. It is best to get the shot before the start of sexual activity.
How many shots do you need?

There are three shots. Once you get the first shot, you need a second shot two months later. You need to get a third shot six months after you get the first shot.
How long are you protected?

Since the vaccine is new, more studies need to be done. For example, the FDA does not know if you will need to have a booster after a couple of years.
Should I get the vaccine if I already have HPV?

The vaccine will not treat or cure HPV. It may help people who have one type of HPV from being infected with the other types. For example, if you have type 6, it may protect you from getting type 16.

Unfortunately, I don't think there is anything they can do about it. It has been going on for over 50 years now and the family just found out. How do you track cellular growth and dispersion?

Thanks for that ACCURATE info DA- and note even if it was sexually transmitted, people can and do get STI's from their spouses all the time! Like herpes, a man can have HPV and not know it and inadvertently transmit it to his spouse/woman.

Are we morally penalizing people for having cancer now or is it the possibility that this lady was fucking we suddenly have a problem with on a porn board:confused:

JHU has a history of unethical treatment. Even now in Baltimore, older black folk have told me that their parents would often warn them not to walk pass Hopkins at night because black people were known to go missing. Maybe a boogie man fairytale, but still points to the suspicious and unethical treatment our people received at the hands of JHU.

I worked for Hopkins doing research for several years. Arrogance and disconnection from the community are still a big part of their culture.
