Why is rap more popular than rock?

I can't figure this out for the life of me. Rock is so much better... real instruments and the melodies are a lot better.... seemingly because rock musicians tend to make their own music and not sample it. But why is cRap so much more popular than rock? Rock sounds better.

For the most part Rock > Mainstream Rap IMO.

Music is a thing of taste firstly.. and secondly you cant lump it all together. I can throw some rock at you that sounds like youre standing in the middle of a tornado aka not good. I listen to all types of music.. Theres fly shit in every genre.

Rap is just the current cool kid "rebellion" thing. Get into music history and youll understand.

The most popular rap artist MAY sell 5 million every once and a while (see Jay-Z).

Never seen a rap artist sell out NFL stadiums across the country. Rock stars do it all of the time. Rap isn't sustained on the charts. A rock CD will spend two years in the top 100. A rap CD may get two months.

It's not.

I look at every concert hall in the city filled day by day with rock bands. Once a month, a rap act comes to town. A lot of these rock bands are making their money touring......

...and then you got Radiohead that just did some shit that might set the whole music game on fire.....letting you choose what you'll pay for the album. (at least the download)

Can't say it any better than the sistah said in that reply. Shit, black people invented ALL music considered to be indigenous to the United States. We invented the blues, which is the root from which all American music flows. So, the original poster is actually comparing one form of black music to another form of black music.

Well, Black folks didn't invent so-called Country, which is an important part of Rock (as well as an influence on the Blues and old-school R&B).

because in rap every body can rhyme some dumb shit and have a 15 minutes of fame these days in rock u r requied to learn and play an instrument!!
 
I think its because rap music is a part of a whole lifestyle, and the hip-hop culture has a major effect on ones life. Rock might just be music, but sad to say, rap is "life" to most people.
