Why is rap more popular than rock?

I can't figure this out for the life of me. Rock is so much better... real instruments and the melodies are a lot better.... seemingly because rock musicians tend to make their own music and not sample it. But why is cRap so much more popular than rock? Rock sounds better.
:hmm: honestly dude, are you 12? that has to be the most general, simple minded question.:smh:

first, music is art (believe it or not) and art can't be (effectively) judged threw competition. unless there is one common goal.

and i hear you about the use of real instruments, but who gives a fuck when 90% of it is rehashed shit. i was listening to the hives this mourning and lovin it. but it wasn't anything new. you don't get extra credit for copying shit manually. hip hop (not rap) has at least taken steps to analyze the past and stretch the possibilities. rock has has been kickin out the same riffs since the blues gave birth to it.

Uh, I'll be brave and admit, White people do some of the best shit when it comes to Rock.

So, fuck you.

Shut the fuck up with this bullshit. Ever heard of Living Color, Lenny Kravitz, Bad Brains, or even Prince? We started this "Bout It Bout It" shit, you fuckin' dumbass. :hmm:

Considering that "Rock" is a general term that encompasses Metal, Heavy Metal, Alternative, Old School Rock n' Roll and Ska (maybe even more), I think that your assumption is incorrect. "Rap" is a lot more mainstream then it once was, but it still has a ways to go to be more popular than "Rock". Overall my advice would be to listen to plenty of both as well as other music. There are excellent artists/bands in every genre of music. Don't box yourself in, b/c when you do, you miss out on some amazing listening experiences.:)

These days, I feel that Rap is more popular because the lyrics are insipid, and appeal to the lowest common denominator fantasy involving young Black folks.

After the early 90s, I just gave up on Rap (though I do hear something I like once in a while). None of it is thought provoking to me. And I'm a person who likes listening to (and seeing) folks play instruments. And if you look at the Top Ten concerts tours of the year, (USA Today did an article last week) Rap concerts didn't even make the list. Though Record/CD sales-wise, Rap still makes a dent.

Even most Rock hasn't been that great either. Most of the bands these days are "faceless". No lasting value. But White boys are still playing instruments. And come up with some good guitar licks. Which I wish more young Blacks would do.

One of my White/Jewish co-workers invited me to see RUSH a few weeks back (it was my second time seeing them). You bet my Black-ASS went. You know why? Because I've always felt that band has survived the test of time with thought-provoking lyrics, and top musicianship. Their latest album, "SNAKES AND ARROWS" and Chaka Khan's "FUNK THIS" are the BEST albums I've heard so far this year.

It's the sign of the times.Young people aren't interested in real music anymore. They just want something quick fast and in A hurry , quality means nothing to them.

Well, Black folks didn't invent so-called Country, which is an important part of Rock (as well as an influence on the Blues and old-school R&B).

Country music is primarily a fusion of African American blues and spirituals with Appalachian folk music, adapted for pop audiences and popularized beginning in the 1920s. The origins of country are in rural Southern folk music, which was primarily Irish and British, with African and continental European musics.

i thought that remark was off. implying that blues derived from country :smh:. now, they may have started around the same time when country was just hillbilly, and honky tonk (due to the obvious culture divide). but they're clearly not even from the same vein.

Rap ain't new no more. I told ya'll these young cats be listening to r n b and alternative now. Rap had its run like Motown, Funk, grunge, etc. now only the older heads support it. These little white boy singers whats in now :smh:

not saying i like one better, but i've been listening to the first 4 metallica albums lately... I've been listening to hiphop for years and love the shit out of it, but for some reason i just got this great feeling listening to METALLICA
recently those wailing guitars and the changing up of tempos gives me goosebumps its been a looooooooong time since hiphop has done that for me, by the way im 26, i lived thru the golden era.
