I don't generally like putting my biz on BGOL Front Street but...
I'll skip over what I do now. What I did was write full-time for quite a while. Always loved to write, pursued my passion with conviction--not just in school, but on my own every chance I got, in journals, in poetry slams, even spitting rhymes with the crew, got my love for words up strong.
Then parlayed writing for my school paper, and a faith in keeping crew loyalty strong among the homies, into writing opportunities when the internet boom hit in the late 90s. Magazines didnt have big budgets in most cases for their websites so they always needed good, cheap writers.
Flipped that into writing for major publications in print, not just on their sites.
Flipped that into what I do now.
Three things that factored in major:
1. Being prepared for opportunity when it came, by making a full time commitment to the craft.
2. Keeping interactions with people as positive, win-win, loyal and real as possible (golden rule). i.e. not burning bridges I did not have to burn. As the old school pimp on American Pimp said, "Players and macks back in the day always left a positive energy with people they interacted with." You gotta leave people on a good note when possible, opportunity flows better that way
3. Playing chess not checkers.
