I notice many of you guys have some pretty good careers and education behind your BGOL screen names. I was wondering what some of yall did for a living and how you got this position you are currently at.

I am a FAMU grad of 05' and I am not having any luck finding a stable job ever since I lost my job 4 months ago. Im just trying to see what some you guys did to land the gigs you are holding down right now.

Oh, shit. My brother saw that joint. That's the David Arquette movie from about 1/2 a decade back that grossed about $16.00 (two tickets sold) in theatres, right? That movie grossed about as much as AMIL's one album sold. Double-wood, baby. KMart cashierdom ... classic :)

I have a B/S in Network & communications management and an MBA, and work as a telecom supervisor for my company. I monitor the phone network and do some reporting.

I started there part-time while I was in school and became cool with this pretty blonde white chick that worked with me. We talked in the break room, I told her I was going to school and talked basic stuff and that was it. The telecom manager was crazy over this girl and was probably hitting it on the side. Anyways a position opened up and the blonde told the telecom manager that I would be a good fit. I applied and was hired.

Basically I got my job because a beautiful blonde gave me a good recomendation. I was quallified but probably wouldn't have been considered if I didnt know the girl. Thats real talk!!

I suppose this could have backfired if the guy was jealous, but i was dating someone at the time and she told the manager that too.. (females spread all of your business)

It's all about who you know in Corporate America.

Risk Management consultant for a Fortune 50 company. I got a M.B.A immediately after undergrad. Still took me a long time to find a job in my field. I worked "retail" for a year and a half and even had to move TO Atlanta to find a decent gig in my field. I'm good to go now

But bruh you need to give us more info. Like what is your DEGREE in? Where city you currently live in.... and if you have any experience/internships.

But I will give you some general advice. Get any idea out of your head that you are owed a good paying job simply because you have a degree :(
It does not work like that. Get a resume makeover from a professional in the industry in which you seek to gain entrance. Be prepared to move to a city that needs a lot of your degree. UNDERSTAND that you will be lucky to see more than $35K/year fresh out of college. Work for a company that PAYS for Grad School.... and go get a Master's degree while you gain work experience.

That's why...getting your MBA right after Undergrad is probably one of the worst things you can do.

An MBA is much different than a JD, MD, etc. etc.

An MBA is only good and pays back dividends when paired with 5 or more years of solid experience.

If not, to most jobs you look like a applicant full of theory, but no practical application and that does 10x more harm then good.

Me: Help build a $3B business which is now bringing in close to $1B in reoccuring gross revenue every year.

There's a million hustles in the world. Creativity and vision is more important that outright smarts in this world. Don't let whatever degree you get define what it is that you're supposed to do. I see this happen to so many people and it makes me sick ... I got an accounting degree - so I should be an accountant!

Network like a prositute. Don't become an island all to yourself. And more importantly, learn GOOD social skills. This means read the paper, books, shit outside of your comfort zone so you can be apart of any conversation and have something relevant to add. I spend no less than 5 hours a week just reading.
And in return, I'm a smoozing king, I can talk about nearly anything on God's green from Apples to Zebras and b/c of this, I've gotten more job offers or offers to "swing by the office and see me next week" at socials and dinner parties than I can count.

NETWORK - BE SMART - BE CREATIVE - BE COOL - BE YOURSELF - DON'T PASS UP AN OPPORTUNITY TO SHINE BUT DON'T BE COCKY ABOUT IT EITHER - STAY HUNGRY AND ON THE GRIND.

get certified to teach public school bro. until then, hook up to work two jobs with a temp agency. are you in shape? holler at the air force. either way young brotha, get your paper right. i was where you are when i graduated in '03. its almost a rite of passage for a black male with a college degree.

I have a Bachelors degree in Criminal Justice and a Bachelors degree in Business Quality Management. I don't use either of these degrees in my job. I work for the postal service. I've been there for 11 years now. I just sit at a computer all day. It's boring and monotonous. I'm going back to school this year so I can start a new career before I get too old. I work with people that have Masters Degrees and a few have Phd's. They don't earn a penny more than I do.

The postal service is good start if you can't find a job in your career field. The postal workers that make it to top management positions make over 100k. There is also a management training program that is open to the public. The postal service also has excellent benefits.

The postal exam is only given to the public every 3 years and it depends on what area of the country you live in.

Go to www.usps.com/employment and see what is available in your area.

Very MANY MAJOR corporations offer some form of tuition reimbursement. Now you have to "get in" to a position with said company that has some upward mobility. I mean even if a company offers tuition reimbursment... they aint offering to the folks that work in the call center.

Yeh I hear you about Jacksonville. But I also say that we you come out of college BE PREPARED to MOVE to a place that has the best opportunity for you. I.e move to ATLANTA, CHARLOTTE, HOUSTON, DALLAS, DC, or whatever.

When you have exhaused all your local options... you got to widen your search. EVERY COMPANY does not offer tutiton reimbursement for EVERY PERSON in the company. But a good number of companies offer this program for employees (even entry level) in positions that are on tracks to executive managment

I went to famu as well , graduate dec '05. Computer Programmer. B.S. in Computer Science. Own computer consultant firm and currently working for the man, until I am able to branch off on my own.

One year at Howard...fucked around and played spades and partied with the football team and their bitches the whole year.

Became a secretary for a few years. Pops moved to DC and got me a job at HUD as a clerk typist. A few years later, I moved over to a PC tech position there. A few more years later, I quit and got a PC tech/networking position at the Pentagon working for the Joint Staff. Left there and got into programming and have been doing so ever since, 10+yrs. I went from making about 18k as a clerk typist in 92-93 to 165k now as a self-employed consultant with NO degree and on the job training. :)

Got into personal training to make extra ends and meet bitches.

Yeah, a degree helps but, it's not necessary depending on ur career.

I teach Public School and I got it from a sister who suggested it when I quit the previous job (transportation industry). I'm getting certified now so I'll be secure even through this NCLB bullshit. I'm going to pick up another job once I'm fully certified. Teachers don't really make shit considering all these triflin parent's children we've got to manage.

Damn they let Niggas In the PENTAGON

I received my Bachelor's degree in English with a minor in mass communication. For a while, I did work at a Christian radio station. I passed the interview making them believe I was religious, but I don't even go to church. My job was to write commercials, but they instantly realized I was incompetent because I didn't know The Bible too well.

Needless to say, I don't work there anymore, lol. Now, I'm a full-time substitute teacher and just do retail part-time. But the state is paying for half of my master's in education.

CLASSIC. I've got a Church's Chicken spot about 5 mins from my pad, and I always use to laugh when I'd stop in there once a year or so. They had a clique of high school kids who were the ultimate fake thugs. Seems like they hired these cats all at once. They used to clown around in the back, and then mean mug and try to style on you when you'd come in and place an order. One cat tried me once (a good 5 years my junior) and I told the guy ... "You're a deep fryer at Church's Chicken, pimpin'. Step your game up, then get your comedy on."

I was kinda pissed a few years back. Missed that joint when they aired it on TBS. You can always count on that station to air shitty movies :)

I don't generally like putting my biz on BGOL Front Street but...

I'll skip over what I do now. What I did was write full-time for quite a while. Always loved to write, pursued my passion with conviction--not just in school, but on my own every chance I got, in journals, in poetry slams, even spitting rhymes with the crew, got my love for words up strong.

Then parlayed writing for my school paper, and a faith in keeping crew loyalty strong among the homies, into writing opportunities when the internet boom hit in the late 90s. Magazines didnt have big budgets in most cases for their websites so they always needed good, cheap writers.

Flipped that into writing for major publications in print, not just on their sites.

Flipped that into what I do now.

Three things that factored in major:

1. Being prepared for opportunity when it came, by making a full time commitment to the craft.

2. Keeping interactions with people as positive, win-win, loyal and real as possible (golden rule). i.e. not burning bridges I did not have to burn. As the old school pimp on American Pimp said, "Players and macks back in the day always left a positive energy with people they interacted with." You gotta leave people on a good note when possible, opportunity flows better that way

3. Playing chess not checkers.
