Description



Experiencing African-centered education and/or socialization are an essential element of the development of a positive racial/cultural identity for youth of African descent. However, as a result of growing up within a hegemonic post-slavery society that has not reconciled its brutal past and present, Black youth must navigate an onslaught of misinformation that leads them to dissociate themselves from their African heritage, as well as dissociate African heritage from the creation of the sophisticated indigenous African knowledge systems that shaped the world.



As African-centered people who believe in the power of connecting to traditional African culture and heritage, we understand this dilemma. However, it is still a challenge to influence our beloved youth to gain an authentic and genuine love for their heritage, and thus, cultivate love for a very important part of themselves, if we are unable to fully immerse in African-centered education and community. The current nation-wide information war we are witnessing contains both positive and detractive trends, which presents unique challenges and opportunities.



This presentation will present the findings of original research on the impact of an African-centered program on Black high school students that was led by IKG’s cultural memory specialist and international community scholar, Anthony Browder aka Nana Segu Karakh. Implications of the research, in particular for parents and teachers of students of African descent, will also be presented. The presentation will conclude with a solutions-oriented group discussion.



About the Presenter



Kweli Zukeri was born and raised in Northern Va. He has a B.A. in Journalism and Mass Communication and minor in social entrepreneurship from UNC at Chapel Hill, as well as an M.S. in Psychology and Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology from Howard University. Both his master thesis and dissertation focused on exploring the impact of African-centered school-based programming on American African student racial and cultural identity, as well as American African student learning. Prior to his recent graduate studies, he also studied ancient African/Kemetic language for 2 years in Howard’s department of Africana studies, and has been a facilitator of the Egypt on the Potomac Field Trip of Washington, D.C. for more than a decade.



He is currently the Director of User Experience & Web Strategy in Howard’s Office of University Communications. Additionally, he is involved in local efforts to force antiracist reform of curriculum and pedagogy in Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS).



Ultimately, his purpose is to help people of African descent acquire greater liberation and power, as well as chip away at the destructive, colonist power structure. He is currently helping raise two children with his partner in Springfield, VA, and enjoys martial arts, being active, and becoming the highest expression of his true self.
