What Everyone’s Getting Wrong About the Toilet Paper Shortage?

It isn’t really about hoarding. And there isn’t an easy fix.

TOILET01.jpg
Around the world, in countries afflicted with the coronavirus, stores are sold out of toilet paper. There have been shortages in Hong Kong, Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. And we all know who to blame: hoarders and panic-buyers.

Well, not so fast.

Story after story explains the toilet paper outages as a sort of fluke of consumer irrationality. Unlike hand sanitizer, N95 masks, or hospital ventilators, they note, toilet paper serves no special function in a pandemic. Toilet paper manufacturers are cranking out the same supply as always. And it’s not like people are using the bathroom more often, right?

U.S. Health Secretary Alex Azar summed up the paradox in a March 13 New York Times story: “Toilet paper is not an effective way to prevent getting the coronavirus, but they’re selling out.” The president of a paper manufacturer offered the consensus explanation: “You are not using more of it. You are just filling up your closet with it.”

Faced with this mystifying phenomenon, media outlets have turned to psychologists to explain why people are cramming their shelves with a household good that has nothing to do with the pandemic. Read the coverage and you’ll encounter all sorts of fascinating concepts, from “zero risk bias” to “anticipatory anxiety.” It’s “driven by fear” and a “herd mentality,” the BBC scolded. The libertarian Mises Institute took the opportunity to blame anti-gouging laws. The Atlantic published a short documentary harking back to the great toilet paper scare of 1973, which was driven by misinformation.

Most outlets agreed that the spike in demand would be short-lived, subsiding as soon as the hoarders were satiated.

No doubt there’s been some panic-buying, particularly once photos of empty store shelves began circulating on social media. There have also been a handful of documented cases of true hoarding. But you don’t need to assume that most consumers are greedy or irrational to understand how coronavirus would spur a surge in demand. And you can stop wondering where in the world people are storing all that Quilted Northern.

There’s another, entirely logical explanation for why stores have run out of toilet paper — one that has gone oddly overlooked in the vast majority of media coverage. It has nothing to do with psychology and everything to do with supply chains. It helps to explain why stores are still having trouble keeping it in stock, weeks after they started limiting how many a customer could purchase.

In short, the toilet paper industry is split into two, largely separate markets: commercial and consumer. The pandemic has shifted the lion’s share of demand to the latter. People actually do need to buy significantly more toilet paper during the pandemic — not because they’re making more trips to the bathroom, but because they’re making more of them at home. With some 75% of the U.S. population under stay-at-home orders, Americans are no longer using the restrooms at their workplace, in schools, at restaurants, at hotels, or in airports.

Georgia-Pacific, a leading toilet paper manufacturer based in Atlanta, estimates that the average household will use 40% more toilet paper than usual if all of its members are staying home around the clock. That’s a huge leap in demand for a product whose supply chain is predicated on the assumption that demand is essentially constant. It’s one that won’t fully subside even when people stop hoarding or panic-buying.

I bought toilet paper at the same pace I always did. I always keep a 24 or 48 pack as extra. It didn't make sense to me that of all the things the world would run short of is toilet paper. I have been more worried about a shortage of food more than anything else, but supermarkets are staying stocked so I'm worry free, minus catching corona.

People that buy a bunch of TP = hoarders
People that dont buy a bunch and have to go out shopping while there's a stay at home order = stupid people can't stay home. We'll never get rid of the virus.
Ok, so what is it?

I don't know but I bet we'll finally begin to see a lot of these dudes start pulling their pants up if there continues to be a toilet paper shortage.

That or #baconstrips will be trending on the internet soon.

Toilet Paper is selling out for the same reason Popeyes chicken sandwich was sold out and Pattie Pies were sold out, SOCIAL MEDIA. Something will start being shared on social media and people will start “following“ it like they are hypnotized. If you wanna see just how social media works just take this TIKTOK; TIKTOK has been around for a few years but it was called MUSICAL.LY and people have been using it but earlier this year they simply changed the name to TIKTOK, someone started a challenge and now everyone is addicted to TIKTOK

No doubt.

Basic herd mentality.

Just like if a man is walking down the street at a normal pace and a group of people start running pass him eventually he'll be influenced by everyone else and instinctively start running as well without even knowing why.

Like the article said.... you go to the bathroom in different places.... work, restaurants, etc.... now you're taking a dump in one spot.... home..... the commercial manufacturing is shifting towards the plush home toilet paper side of the business from the commercial B.S. one ply side.... shit will be fucked up again with shortages on the commercial side when things open up again...

yep but this one takes the cake on stupidity involving this social media herd mentality. They are triggered off the words “quarantine“ and “lockdown”, no matter how many times the leaders say shelter in place, go out to get essentials and social distancing all that they hear is “WE’RE ON LOCKDOWN AND CANT LEAVE THE HOUSE”, but instead of saying I gotta stock up on milk, bread and other stuff their saying “OMG I GOTTA GO BUY TOILET PAPER”

Its worse than that.

We weren't even quarantined when that shit started and it wasn't even really certain at that point.

Not even here in New York State and we were one of the first states to begin discussing quarantine.

Thankfully

An example of herd mentality working out for the best.
still very funny how b4 that you had none of these social distancers being leaders and doing it off their own extincts they just followed someone else.. Very scary to think what if NBA never made that call and you left it up to society to think for themselves what would have been the outcome

Not even here in New York State and we were one of the first states to begin discussing quarantine.

That’s why I said the “word” quarantine is what triggered them, 90% of the country still hasn’t been told they were to quarantine, the political leaders have used the term “shelter in place” and then put out a list of things they could still do, that list basically said you still do everything you’ve been doing but once you finish to go back home. Here in Alabama they said you could still go out and play golf...lol

But like Outlaw said this toilet paper rush started before the people were even at home for extended periods and were still taking shits at work and restaurants.

toilet paper is so 20th century...

imagine a warm mist spritzing your hiney clean...
then a warm summer breeze gently blows you dry...

Nah I don’t even like that splash that hits sometimes so I’d pass on that bidet stuff:tut:

BAD analogy there...… there was a reason for that.... there's no reason for hoarding TP

.
nobody was doing social distance until NBA fell back.. Nobody took it serious until nba said we canceling... The ncaa championship wouldve happened yesterday if not for the nba

We were talking "herd mentality".... not people actually waking up and smelling the coffee..... it just took the cancelation of sports bitch slapping them to wake them up

every sport followed cause they didn't want to look like assholes being the only sport playing.. That is herd mentality going against what you think to fit in or to appease others... If not the NBA decision we would of saw no fan sports events

Kinda like the NBA shutting down and everyone else followed

The NBA was debating on having games without crowds. Once a player tested positive, the realization of all the people he came into contact with behind the scenes and on the court made the issue real and hit home.

They were talking about the teams that he previously played, how another team used the plane that they used. It was just too much and something had to be done.

There is no toilet paper shortage. That is a flat out lie.
The big distributors simply didn't increase distribution to match demand.
That way, they control the profit margin.

Big grocery store chain orders x amount of packs of TP from the distributor. let's say, 10k every 2 weeks.
Virus hits, people start running to the stores.
Big grocery hits up distributor: "We need to increase to 30k every two weeks."
Distributor sees what's going on. Does the math. Has to pay overtime for x amount of employees to meet the demand.
Distributor says "Nope. Its 10k every 2 weeks. We have a contract." I'll do you a solid and increase it to 12k but no more. You dole it out however you want but I'm not ramping up production.
Hoarders hit the stores. Shelves empty. Big Grocery changes its own shelving tactics to match the distributor's supply.
Looks like there's no toilet paper. Its the same or maybe a little more going out to fewer people. They've got warehouses full of it. They just aren't going to let the buyers control the market or else when this dies down, they will take a huge financial hit because people already have toilet paper.
Its all a huge industry lie so that they can keep that bread flowing when this blows over.
