Okay, so I just got off the phone with a employer regarding a possible position with Cablevision. They gave me a brief phone interview which went pretty smoothly up until they asked me about my schooling. Long story short, they told me that although I look very good on paper, the position requires an associates degree in the related field, or sum type of certifications. I'm currently going to school for health sciences, so it doesn't pertain to the field and $18 an hour for a help desk job is sounding kind of good right about now. Bgol fam help a brother out What type of certifications should I be looking for to land this job?

A+.. Basic Networking @ the most. Most of those installers dont really know shit about networking other than what they are trained on. I say A+ because more than likely they would you to be able to identify the basic properties and functions of a PC and how to hook one up.

A+, N+ to get your foot in the door. Those are very basic and will give you the knowledge you need to succeed.

Thx for the info guys, Im gonna search the web to find some study guides an get my ass A+ and Net certified.

The A+ , Net + , etc are all helpful stuff to be taught , but at least work part time for at computer OR technical call center while going to school because I'm a tech in my 50's with only Windows 2000/A+ certs and there are folk with Bachelors degrees and those other certs working next to me that know next to nothing.
The industry will occasionally take PR type people over your credentials if they wanna bullshit their client base.

Bottom line , get good at wnat you want to do while watching how larger corps do the thing, and start your own company seeking small to medium sized business clients
:hmm:(or learn how to bid for large scale contracts after planning how to support a client with 500 users).

A+ & N+ are good but damn they paying low especially for NY. If they only paying $38K/year then you're gonna need a side hustle cuz that is no where near enough.

A+ doesn't get you shit but $12 an hour, that's like having a high school diploma

DOGS i'ma keep it so funky for you right now......
to do that job YOU DON'T NEED SHIT!!! but like dude said "to get in the door" get that A+.

whut makes me an expert, i used to work for them mofos. i was one of the first 10 triple threat tech in ny state. started with them in cust service and went to school (they paid for it ) and worked my way into online support. real talk a supp taught me everything i needed to do the job during my lunch hour, i got the job, but the manager wouldn't let me have the job because i didn't have any background (just didn't like truthfully). enrolled in the mcse track and after 3 months had more than enuff qualification (no certs) to do the job. once you learn "network essentials" you're golden!!!!

funny thing: they paid the same thing when i first started - that was back in the mid 90s son!!!! CRAZY!!!

Heres my reply good luck all you need is in therei have some other threads with other cert info not many of them but its good info. Good luck

I can say thru personal experience that 38k for a help desk job in NY is more then generous, expecially when most of these jobs get outsourced to places like the Philipines, and India, but i can say that for the most part, the perks of the job outweighs the salary. I worked for a company that outsourced for verizon, they only payed 11hr, but they had great dental and health plan, free cable, phone and internet, they had flexible hours for students, and they even payed half of your rent.

For a job in NY, $38K isn't generous enough. NYC cost of living is too high for anyone to be able to get by the way they'd want to on that kind of salary. Hell anything under $50K is gonna be tough on a single individual even with benefits.
