BREAKING: Newsom reveals Trump called him at 2am to ramble about his ‘Newscum' nickname
Gavin Newsom has revealed the details of a bizarre late-night phone call he had with Donald Trump, claiming the president asked him for his thoughts on the "Newscum" nickname he regularly uses for the California Governor.
"I've had perhaps the most interesting, I would argue, relationship with him of any Democrat because we worked together during covid and we worked very very collaboratively during that period of time," Newsom, who is now one of Trump's most vocal critics, told The Rest is Politics podcast.
"We had our differences," the governor noted when questioned about Trump's suggestion that coronavirus might be treated by injecting disinfectant into the body. But he claimed the president "has a deep desire to get along."
However, Newsom pinpointed that there was one moment that saw their lighthearted banter shift into full-blown enemy territory. "It radically shifted last June. And it shifted after a phone call that I had with Trump. Trump called me late at night, about 1.30, almost 2 in the morning, his time," he recalled.
Newsom recounted that he'd received a call from an unknown number in Palm Beach and didn't answer it. However, they left a voicemail and he realized upon listening to it that it was the president.
Newsom noted he's had an 'interesting' relationship with Trump
Newsom said he checked back in with Trump's chief of staff, telling him that he would call the president back the next day as it was late. However, he was told to speak with him straight away so he called Trump back.
"It was a 19-minute conversation about, quote, unquote, the riots in Los Angeles. And it begins with the following. God is my witness...He goes, 'What do you think of Newscum?' You know, the nickname Newscum. He calls me Newscum, worst governor," Newsom revealed.
"He goes 'Pretty original, right?' I said, 'No, it's not original.' I said, 'Mr. President, in eighth grade, it's actually in the book, they were calling me Newscum," the California governor added as he continued recounting the conversation.
Newsom revealed that Trump then went on to brag about his MAGA catchphrase and how many hats he'd sold. "He goes 'What about MAGA? Pretty good.' I said 'Oh yeah Make America Great' but I said, 'That's not original, I mean Reagan had it.' He cuts me off, goes, 'How many hats do you think I sold last month?'
Newsom noted that his 'mind radically shifted' after the phone call with Trump last June
"This is right when we allegedly had riots on the streets of LA," Newsom noted as he claimed the president did not once bring up Los Angeles during the call. Newsom went on to say that Trump also brought up his debate performance against Kamala Harris, claiming that "it was four against one," and complaining about the cameraman.
Newsom shared that the phone call came just hours before Trump ordered thousands of National Guard troops to be deployed to Los Angeles in the wake of protests against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). "15 hours later, he tweets out… we’re federalising the National Guard. 4,000 National Guard are federalised, 700 active duty Marines. Didn’t even talk about it. Completely made up," Newsom said.
"It was at that moment that my mind radically shifted," he added.
