ka-bala

THE MYSTERIOUS GAME THAT FORETELLS THE FUTURE

If there was a contest for the weirdest talking board of all time, ka-bala the Mysterious Game that Foretells the Future, would win unequivocally. From the eerie green glow-in-the-dark board, to the smashed dragon impaled by the Eye of Zohar, ka-bala gives new meaning to the word "bizarre." You and a partner are instructed to start the game with the chant: "PAX, SAX, SARAX, HOLA, NOA, NOSTRA." From this point on, anything can happen as the two of you, with your hands on the "Solary Projectors," roll a black marble around the channel that circles the board and wait for it to come to rest at one of the many symbols. Depending on the "Astral Plane" chosen, the future is revealed by letters and numbers like a talking board, or by Tarot cards placed in specially designed "wells," or astrologically by the zodiac conveniently spelled out in bas-relief around the perimeter of the board. Care must be taken not to get too carried away as you play since the black marble has a tendency to leave the channel and fly across the room like a bullet. Did I mention that the Eye of Zohar follows your every move? The instruction sheet that comes with ka-bala is especially helpful. All the rules are presented in great detail along with the sage advice that the lights must be on in order to read the Tarot cards. The cartoon below appeared in comic books.

Except for the episode featuring the "origin" of The Maginot,
This show has been pretty silly.
And last night's episode made it even more so.

It's like watching a "CW" version of the "ALIEN" franchise.

"EYE" Alien is cool though.
Liked that it gave the Xenomorph some fear.

Alien: Earth
2025

8.5/10

I binged this series yesterday at home on Hulu.

The main premise of the series is around the future of Cyborgs, Synthetics and Hybrids in the franchise. The start of the first episode cleared up a bunch of questions on the Weyland-Yutani Corp. that has come up in the first 3 Alien films that are canon along with Prometheus/Covenant films and recent Romulus film.

The series takes place about 2 years prior to Alien (1977). Because of this, this series opens some questions with events in that film that should be answered in future seasons of this series.

Suspense and action is presented well throughout the episodes. There really isn’t a slow episode that can be labeled as “filler”. Every episode and scene keeps your eyes glued to the screen.

There are a number of stand out characters in the series that are presented well. If you haven’t seen it, the Cyborg “Morrow” is a highlight. You will think the Alien Xenomorph would be the highlight enemy of the series, but there is an Eye Octopus alien that steals the series. I was highly impressed with this alien.

VFX/SFX is at movie theater level. The series doesn’t look cheap.

With how the season ended, like I pointed out earlier in my review, it opens up some questions. It doesn’t look like Disney is gonna leave us hanging, so being this series takes place 2 years before Alien (1977) it looks like this series might play out like “Rogue One” with its future series finale leading directly into Alien.

Definitely looking forward to what Disney has planned for the franchise and this series.

Synopsis

When a mysterious space vessel crash-lands on Earth, Wendy and a ragtag group of tactical soldiers make a fateful discovery that puts them face-to-face with the planet's greatest threat.

Noah Hawley, the creative force behind FX‘s Alien Earth, is staying in business with the network and Disney Entertainment Television. Hawley has signed a new overall deal, continuing the creative partnership with a second season renewal of the hit drama series. Production is moving from Thailand to London, where it is set to begin filming next year. Deadline understands that Hawley’s new overall deal is valued in the nine-figures.

Inspired by Ridley Scott’s sci-fi thriller film Alien, Hawley adapted the film franchise for television with the strong support of Scott Free and its president, David W. Zucker, who is an executive producer of the series. It earned a positive reaction from fans, posting a 94% Certified Fresh rating from Rotten Tomatoes and a Metacritic Must-Watch score of 85.

“It has been our great privilege to work with Noah for more than a decade on some of FX’s best and biggest shows, and we are thrilled to extend our partnership well into the future,” said FX Chairman John Landgraf. “Noah never stops surprising us with truly original stories— and his unique ability to bring them to vibrant life as a director and producer as well as writer makes him extraordinary. We can’t wait to get to work on the next season of Alien: Earth, as well as some equally exciting future projects in advanced development.”…
