Former President Donald Trump offered a stunning rebuke of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis as polls show the latter posing a significant obstacle to the former's 2024 plans.
Trump shared his opinions about his former ally to New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman, whom he spoke to in an on-the-record capacity three times as part of the research for her new book: Confidence Man: The Making of Donald Trump and the Breaking of America. Haberman shared details of those conversations in an article for the Atlantic published Sunday, in which the former president claimed credit for DeSantis winning the GOP gubernatorial nomination back in 2018.

NEWSOM SAYS HE'S MORE WORRIED ABOUT TUCKER CARLSON THAN TRUMP, CALLS DESANTIS A 'BULLY'
The 45th president called the Florida governor “fat,” “phony,” and “whiny" when Haberman asked about him during a meeting late this summer at the Trump National Golf Club Bedminster in New Jersey. It is not clear if Trump offers additional disparaging remarks about DeSantis that are documented in the book and not the Atlantic article.

Trump's comments were made around the same time as news emerged that DeSantis had raised more money since January of last year than himself or President Joe Biden. News of DeSantis's impressive haul was confirmed by Open Secrets, which analyzed the fundraising efforts of the top 20 presidential contenders. DeSantis raised $177.4 million for his reelection campaign as of Sept. 9, a national record for gubernatorial campaigns.

In addition to fundraising, DeSantis also leads the former president by an impressive 8 points in a USA Today/Suffolk University poll asking how Florida Republican registered voters would vote in a hypothetical primary between the two. That poll is far from an outlier, with numerous others in the last year having similar results.
Between the polling and fundraising numbers, party operatives and voters alike have speculated that the Florida governor is laying the groundwork for a 2024 presidential bid. If accurate, that would place him at odds with Trump, who is widely understood to be preparing to launch his 2024 candidacy after the November midterm elections.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom, a Democrat with well-reported White House ambitions of his own, has opted to go after DeSantis over Trump as he aims to boost his own profile as a potential 2024 candidate. The California governor called his Florida counterpart "a bully" at an event in Texas last week and recently ran ads in the Sunshine State going after DeSantis and other GOP lawmakers for attacking "freedom" with abortion restrictions.
“Freedom is under attack in your state,” Newsom said in the ad. “I urge all of you living in Florida to join the fight, or join us in California, where we still believe in freedom.”

While neither DeSantis nor Trump has declared their 2024 candidacy, their feud has sparked national headlines as it continues to escalate.
DeSantis did not respond to the Washington Examiner's request for comment.

I wonder if between now and this time next year he'll end up with DeSantis as his running mate despite all this. DeSantis is popular but going head to head in 2024 could be dangerous. ....a more dark horse one would be Tulsi "anti-white racism" Gabbard

GOP has been selling out 45 and his people out for DumbSantis they just waiting cause someone keeps telling the DOJ and the Jan 6 panel where to look and it can only becoming from the GOP.

Right-wing figures are ripping into Trump for mocking Ron DeSantis ahead of the midterms

Some right-wing figures who usually back Donald Trump are now slamming him for mocking Ron DeSantis.

The former president gave DeSantis the nickname "Ron DeSanctimonious" on Saturday.

Critics of the nickname said the mockery undermines GOP unity as the midterms approach.

Trump Threatens to Reveal Unflattering Information About DeSantis if He Runs

But Trump added, in remarks published Tuesday by The Wall Street Journal, “If he did run, I will tell you things about him that won’t be very flattering. I know more about him than anybody other than perhaps his wife, who is really running his campaign.”

Well, Trump Is Now Suggesting Ron DeSantis Is a Pedophile

Donald Trump recently has been ramping up his attacks on Ron DeSantis ahead of a potential 2024 Republican primary showdown. We’re not going to lie, we figured it take the former president a least a few more months before he started accusing the Florida governor of pedophilia.

Trump has been doing just that on Tuesday, though, sharing a few posts on Truth Social purporting to show DeSantis “grooming high school girls with alcohol as a teacher.”

“That’s not Ron, is it?” Trump wrote, sarcastically. “He would never do such a thing!”

The New York Times reported last year on DeSantis’ time as a teacher at the Darlington School in northwest Georgia. The report notes that several students described DeSantis as “a frequent presence at parties” with seniors at the school. “As an 18-year-old, I remember thinking, ‘What are you doing here, dude?’” one former student told the Times.

The photo Trump shared on Tuesday was originally published in 2021 by a Democratic blog called The Hill Reporter, which noted that the girls in the photo were seniors when it was taken in 2002.

DeSantis responded to Trump’s posts on Wednesday. “I spend my time delivering results for the people of Florida and fighting against Joe Biden,” he said. “That’s how I spend my time. I don’t spend my time trying to smear other Republicans.”

Trump’s line of attack comes as DeSantis seeks to establish himself as the Republican Party’s leading culture warrior, in part by stoking fear over pedophiles and groomers. The governor’s “Don’t Say Gay” law, which prohibits the discussion of gender identity in lower grades of Florida public schools, was widely marketed as an anti-groomer bill, the idea being that educators had been “grooming” young children for sex. DeSantis’ press secretary, Christina Pushaw, last year accused opponents of the then-bill of being groomers themselves, and right-wing activists quickly descended on Disney after the company came out against the legislation. DeSantis is still trying to punish Disney for doing so.

Trump’s Truth Social posts on Tuesday come amid a torrent of attacks against the governor. The former president has recently called DeSantis a “globalist” and a friend to Jeb Bush, while accusing him to bowing to pressure to implement Covid-19 mitigation measures toward the beginning of the pandemic. He’s also whined that DeSantis should be loyal considering it was Trump’s endorsement that helped him win his 2018 gubernatorial run. “Ron DeSantis got elected because of me. He had nothing. He was dead. He was leaving the race. He came over and he begged me. He begged me,” Trump told Hugh Hewitt last week. “He said if you endorse me I’ll win. There were tears coming down from his eyes. He said if you endorse me I’ll win.”
