WASHINGTON (AP) — Hope Hicks, one of President Donald Trump's closest aides, has tested positive for the coronavirus. Hicks, who serves as counselor to the president and traveled with him to a rally Wednesday, tested positive Thursday, according to an administration official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss private health information. She is the closest aide to Trump to test positive so far.

The White House did not immediately respond to multiple questions about the last time Trump was tested and whether he and other staffers who spent time with Hicks in recent days will be asked to quarantine.

“White House Operations collaborates with the Physician to the President and the White House Military Office to ensure all plans and procedures incorporate current CDC guidance and best practices for limiting COVID-19 exposure to the greatest extent possible both on complex and when the President is traveling,” Deere said.

Hicks traveled with the president multiple times this week, including aboard Marine One, the presidential helicopter, for a Minnesota rally Wednesday, and aboard Air Force One to Tuesday night's first presidential debate.

Hicks, one of the president's most trusted aides, previously served as White House communications director and rejoined the administration this year ahead of the election. Her positive test was first reported by Bloomberg News.

Multiple White House staffers have tested positive for the virus, including Katie Miller, Vice President Mike Pence’s press secretary, national security adviser Robert O'Brien, and one of the president's personal valets.

After earlier positive cases close to the president, the White House instituted a daily testing regimen for the president’s senior aides. Others who will be in close proximity to the president and vice president, including reporters, are also tested every day.

President Donald Trump tweets he and first lady Melania Trump test positive for Covid-19

1:02 AM ET, Fri October 2, 2020

(CNN) President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump tested positive for coronavirus, the President announced early Friday morning.

"Tonight, @FLOTUS and I tested positive for COVID-19. We will begin our quarantine and recovery process immediately. We will get through this TOGETHER!" Trump tweeted shortly before 1 am Friday.

The President had said earlier in the night that he planned to quarantine.

"Hope Hicks, who has been working so hard without even taking a small break, has just tested positive for Covid 19. Terrible! The First Lady and I are waiting for our test results. In the meantime, we will begin our quarantine process!" Trump tweeted Thursday night.

He added, "I just went for a test and we'll see what happens, I mean, who knows. ... I spent a lot of time with Hope and so does the first lady, and she's tremendous."

While it's unclear what the President's "quarantine process" will look like, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines state that a 14-day quarantine should take place after the last known exposure to someone who has tested positive for Covid-19. This is because the incubation period for the novel coronavirus can be up to two weeks.

News of Hicks' positive test comes amid continued efforts by the Trump administration to blatantly disregard science and best public health practices during the pandemic, with West Wing staff actively eschewing masks and the President defying recommendations from his own coronavirus task force, proceeding with a busy schedule of packed campaign ralies. Trump and his key aides have shown little interest in changing practices of his staff to meet the needs of the moment.

Trump, in his Fox News interview, speculated that Hicks could have contracted the virus from an interaction with a supporter.
"She's a very warm person. She has a hard time, when soldiers and law enforcement comes up to her, you know, she wants to treat them great, not say, 'Stay away, I can't get near you.' It's a very, very tough disease," he said.

A source close to Hicks told CNN that she is experiencing symptoms and is back in Washington. A source familiar with Hicks' symptoms describes her as being achy and feeling pretty bad. CNN has reached out to Hicks for comment.

"The President takes the health and safety of himself and everyone who works in support of him and the American people very seriously," White House spokesman Judd Deere told CNN in a statement when asked about the level of contact between Hicks and Trump.
The White House made no mention of Hicks by name, nor did it confirm she had tested positive.

"White House Operations collaborates with the Physician to the President and the White House Military Office to ensure all plans and procedures incorporate current CDC guidance and best practices for limiting COVID-19 exposure to the greatest extent possible both on complex and when the President is traveling," Deere added.

Some White House staffers who were in close proximity were notified of the positive test result today, one official said.
This development was first reported by Bloomberg News.

Hicks has traveled with the President multiple times recently, including to the debate in Cleveland on Tuesday, and was seen boarding Marine One, along with several other of the President's closest aides -- Jared Kushner, Dan Scavino and Nicholas Luna -- none of whom wore masks, on Wednesday as Trump was heading to a campaign rally in Minnesota.

"She did test positive, I just heard about this. She tested positive. She's a hard worker. Lot of masks, she wears masks a lot but she tested positive. Then I just went out with a test. I'll see -- you know, because we spent a lot of time -- and the first lady just went out with a test also. So whether we quarantine or whether we have it, I don't know," Trump said during a call-in appearance on Fox News' "Hannity."

Bipartisan 'get well soon' wishes for Trump, but some Democrats send pointed message

The president and the first lady are isolating after testing positive for the coronavirus.

NBC
Oct. 2, 2020
By Rebecca Shabad

WASHINGTON — Messages for a quick recovery began flooding in Friday from lawmakers reacting to the news that President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump tested positive for Covid-19.

They were bipartisan — Democrats and Republicans offered prayers and wishes of "get well soon" to the president and his wife, with some Democrats wondering whether contracting the coronavirus would change Trump's outlook on the pandemic.

"This is tragic, it's very sad, but it also is something that, again, going into crowds unmasked and all the rest is sort of a brazen invitation for something like this to happen," House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said on MSNBC's "Live with Stephanie Ruhle. "It's sad that it did, but nonetheless hopeful that it will be a transition to a saner approach to what this virus is all about."

Pelosi said she was tested Friday morning for Covid-19 because of her in-person meetings with Secretary of the Treasury Steven Mnuchin, although his spokesman said that he has tested negative. The speaker said she is awaiting her results.

Former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julian Castro, who ran for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination, said he hopes Trump now realizes the seriousness of the disease, especially after he previously suggested that people inject themselves with disinfectant to combat the virus.

"Mr. President — if these reports are confirmed, I wish you and the first lady well," Castro said. "I hope this is a wake-up call that this virus is not a hoax or something cured by injecting bleach. We need a plan, not the same divisive, dangerous rhetoric."
nbc_spec_contatc_trace_201002_1920x1080.jpg

Rep. Nanette Barragán, D-Calif., tweeted, "Unfortunately, POTUS' experience with COVID may determine if he changes his tune and attitude or not. If he quickly recovers & is symptom free, will he continue to mock those who wear a mask? Will he still say (re: deaths) 'it is what it is'? Or continue to downplay its danger?"

One Democrat, Rep. Bill Pascrell of New Jersey, retweeted a video clip from Tuesday's presidential debate in which Trump mocked Biden for wearing a mask. Pascrell said, "Please wear a mask. It Mprotects you and it protects others around you."
"Now, President Trump must quarantine completely and strictly follow CDC guidance before he puts anyone else at risk. And the super-spreading rallies must stop. This virus is not a hoax," Rep. Gerry Connolly, D-Va., tweeted.

Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam said on Twitter that he sends his best wishes to the president and the first lady "and to the more than 46,000 Americans — and 450 Virginians" diagnosed with the disease on Thursday. The governor and his wife tested positive for Covid-19 last Friday.
</div><div data-xf-p="1"
Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said in a statement Friday, "This virus doesn't care if you're rich or poor, a Republican or a Democrat, young or old. No one is immune. Not even the president."
Rep. Jennifer Wexton, D-Va., said she hopes Trump, the first lady and their staff recover quickly, and added, "This is a serious disease. Everyone please continue to remain vigilant — wear your masks, maintain social distance, and wash your hands often."

Rep. Brendan Boyle, D-Pa., said on Twitter that he hopes the president and the first lady have a "speedy recovery" and said, "Far too many families have had to suffer because of this virus."
"I hope he recovers fully. He needs to face justice," tweeted Rep. Jared Huffman, D-Calif., who had "please wear a mask" in his twitter username.
"I assume Judge Coney Barrett will be responsibly quarantining for the next two weeks," Huffman added, noting that Barrett had met with Trump in the last week and with senators at the Capitol this week as they consider her Supreme Court nomination.

Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney, D-N.Y., tweeted that everyone is at risk, "Say a prayer for our president and our country. We're all at risk and our nation is in great peril. We must pull through by pulling together. We can be strong, victorious and good."
"COVID didn't sneak up on the President," Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., tweeted. "Since the spring, the White House has had multiple positive cases, including several people who have direct contact with Trump. And yet he didn't wear a mask at public events or private meetings at the White House."

Joe Biden tweeted Friday, "Jill and I send our thoughts to President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump for a swift recovery. We will continue to pray for the health and safety of the president and his family."

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said Friday that he spoke to Trump in the morning about his diagnosis and signaled that there would be no delay in the Senate confirmation process for Barrett.

"He’s in good spirits and we talked business — especially how impressed Senators are with the qualifications of Judge Barrett. Full steam ahead with the fair, thorough, timely process that the nominee, the Court, & the country deserve," McConnell tweeted.

Earlier on Hugh Hewitt's radio show, McConnell said that Trump's positive test, "certainly underscores that the coronavirus is not concerned about the American election...and that it's not going away until we get a vaccine."

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., tweeted, "President Trump is a fighter — through and through. Please join me in praying for a complete and speedy recovery for him and our First Lady!"

At the Capitol, asked by a reporter if Trump has been reckless in his approach to the coronavirus, McCarthy said, "No."

Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., who became the first senator to contract Covid-19, tweeted, "Get well soon and stay strong!" and said he and his wife are keeping the Trump family in their thoughts.
"Praying for a quick and full recovery for the both of you," Rep. Mark Walker, R-N.C., tweeted.

Trump heading to Walter Reed hospital following Covid-19 diagnosis

From CNN's Kevin Liptak and Brian Rokus
October 2, 2020
4:00 p.m.

President Trump is headed to Walter Reed Medical Center, according to a White House pool report.

Trump has had a fever since this morning, a person familiar with the matter says. The person said the fever remains consistent with the White House's earlier description of "mild symptoms."

This is in addition to new information released by the White House doctor, which described Trump as "fatigued."
Trump announced on Twitter he tested positive for coronavirus early Friday morning.

Trump was also administered a dose of Regeneron, according to a memorandum from the President’s physician. “As of this afternoon the President remains fatigued but in good spirits. He’s being evaluated by a team of experts, and together we’ll be making recommendations to the President and First Lady in regards to next best steps,” the physician writes.

The memo also says first lady Melania Trump remains well with only a mild cough and headache, and the remainder of the first family are well and tested negative for SARS-CoV-2 today.

Kellyanne Conway announces she tested positive for coronavirus

(CNN)Former White House counselor Kellyanne Conway said Friday night that she has tested positive for coronavirus, the latest major political figure to say they have Covid-19 after attending a Rose Garden event last Saturday where President Donald Trump announced his Supreme Court pick.

"Tonight I tested positive for COVID-19. My symptoms are mild (light cough) and I'm feeling fine. I have begun a quarantine process in consultation with physicians," Conway tweeted. "As always, my heart is with everyone affected by this global pandemic."

Conway is now the sixth person who attended the event last week, where masks and social distancing were rare, known to have subsequently tested positive:

- President Donald Trump,
- first lady Melania Trump,
- top Trump aide Hope Hicks,
- Republican Utah Sen. Mike Lee,
- Republican North Carolina Sen. Thom Tillis and
- University of Notre Dame President the Rev. John Jenkins are all confirmed to be positive for Covid-19.

Many of the guests for Trump's announcement that he was nominating Judge Amy Coney Barrett arrived at the event with masks on, but as the Rose Garden event got underway, masks were virtually nonexistent.

Was this a "super-spreader event ? ? ?

President Trump’s children offered their support and prayers for their father on Friday after he revealed he had contracted COVID-19.
“@RealDonaldTrump is a true warrior. He will fight through this with the same strength and conviction that he uses to fight for America each and every day,” Eric Trump said in a tweet. “I ask you to join me in praying for his recovery. I have never been more proud of someone and what they have had to endure.”
First daughter and White House adviser Ivanka Trump added, “You are a warrior and will beat this. I love you dad.”
The president’s oldest child, Donald Trump Jr., took his thoughts to Instagram where he posted an image of his father and First Lady Melania Trump seemingly in prayer.
“I am humbly asking that you pray for the health and well-being of my father and the First Lady,” a message over the picture read.
President Trump spent Friday night in Walter Reed National Medical Center out of an “abundance of caution.” He had been treated with Remdesivir as well as a “polyclonal antibody cocktail” provided by pharmaceutical giant Regeneron.
On Saturday, Chief of Staff Mark Meadows left the hospital to deliver “Trump chocolate kisses” to a small crowd of supporters who had gathered outside. Meadows said Trump was in good spirits and doing well.
“Going welI, I think! Thank you to all. LOVE!!!,” Trump said in a tweet late Friday evening.

COVID-Positive Trump Ignores CDC Advice to Take Joyride, With Grim Secret Service Agents in Tow

The president left Walter Reed’s presidential suite in a motorcade to wave to supporters, potentially exposing several Secret Service agents to the coronavirus.

October 4, 2020

After teasing a “little surprise visit” via video on Twitter, President Trump left the hospital on Sunday afternoon to wave to supporters from the back seat of an SUV.

It’s been a very interesting journey. I learned a lot about COVID, Trump, who is still suffering from the coronavirus, said in the video. “I learned it by really going to school, this is the real school, this isn’t the ‘let’s the read book’ school, and I get it, and I understand it,” he added.

Then, contradicting his own words and the advice of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the president left Walter Reed National Military Medical Center’s presidential suite to wave to supporters from a car— a decision that forced at least two Secret Service agents to don personal protective equipment as they shared the same air and enclosed space of the vehicle.

The CDC website explicitly states that if a person is sick with COVID-19, they should stay at home except to get medical care. The CDC’s language is more forceful in its guidelines for health-care workers. “In general, transport and movement of a patient with suspected or confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection outside of their room should be limited to medically essential purposes,” its FAQ page reads.

Medical experts questioned the wisdom of the stunt.

“In general, if someone is ill enough [with the coronavirus] that they need to be in the hospital for observation, it’s probably not wise to send them out on [non-essential care] trips,” Dr. Timothy Brewer, an epidemiologist at the UCLA School of Public Health and former adviser to the WHO, NIH, and CDC, told The Daily Beast. “The primary focus for any patient who’s sick enough to be in the hospital from COVID-19 should be recovering.”
As for the possibility of the president transmitting the virus to the agents in his vehicle, Brewer said, “Being inside a vehicle means you’re going to be close together even if you have all the windows open. You’re essentially in an indoor environment even if you have an air conditioning or ventilation.”

Via Twitter, Dr. James P. Phillips, an attending physician at Walter Reed, was more explicit in his condemnation of Trump’s actions. “That presidential SUV is not only bulletproof, but hermetically sealed against chemical attack,” Phillips wrote. “The risk of COVID-19 transmission inside is as high as it gets outside of medical procedures. The irresponsibility is astounding.”

Phillips wrote in an earlier tweet that the agents in the car would now need to be quarantined for 14 days after having been put at risk of severe illness or death “for political theater.”

The joyride was the latest sign of how the White House has been trying to manage the optics of the president’s illness.

Trump’s physician, Dr. Sean Conley, admitted on Sunday that he hid from the public how high the president’s fever got and the fact that he needed supplemental oxygen before being hospitalized because he wanted to present an “upbeat attitude.”

After initially insisting that Friday’s trip to Walter Reed was purely precautionary, Conley disclosed on Sunday that it was, in fact, the combination of a spiking fever and the oxygen crisis that triggered the move.

White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany tested positive for COVID-19

Making her the latest person in President Trump's orbit to contract the virus.

“After testing negative consistently, including every day since Thursday, I tested positive for COVID-19 on Monday morning while experiencing no symptoms. No reporters, producers or members of the press are listed as close contacts by the White House Medical Unit,” she said in a statement.

“As an essential worker, I have worked diligently to provide needed information to the American people at this time,” she continued. “With my recent positive test, I will begin the quarantine process and will continue working on behalf of the American people remotely.”

White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany tested positive for COVID-19, she said Monday, making her the latest person in President Trump's orbit to contract the virus.

The press secretary is the latest person close to Trump to test positive for COVID-19.

Trump himself tested positive late Thursday
and has been undergoing treatment at Walter Reed Medical Center since Friday after experiencing symptoms.

Others in the president’s circle who have tested positive include one of his closest aides, Hope Hicks; his campaign manager, Bill Stepien; three Republican U.S. senators; and former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who assisted Trump with preparation before last week’s presidential debate.

Many of those who have tested positive, including McEnany, attended a White House event on Sept. 26 during which Trump announced Amy Coney Barrett as his nominee to the Supreme Court.

White House chief of staff Mark Meadows, who has tested negative thus far, including on Monday, acknowledged Friday that there were likely to be more coronavirus cases among White House officials following Trump’s diagnosis.

McEnany did not travel with Trump to a fundraiser in New Jersey on Thursday after learning of Hicks’s test result, but she denied in her statement that she knew Hicks had tested positive when she spoke to reporters from the briefing room podium on Thursday morning. McEnany did not quarantine despite being a close contact of Hicks’ and Trump after both tested positive for the highly contagious virus that has killed roughly 210,000 people in the United States.

The press secretary was seldom spotted wearing a mask for the last several months, even as public health experts said it was one of the most effective ways to limit transmission of COVID-19. After Trump revealed he had tested positive, McEnany was spotted with a mask on waiting for him to depart for the hospital on Marine One.

But . . . on Sunday . . . McEnany briefly fielded questions on the White House driveway without wearing a face covering.

McEnany, Trump’s fourth press secretary, took over the role in April after serving as a Trump campaign spokeswoman. The press secretary is one of the president’s closest aides, regularly traveling with him on Air Force One to campaign rallies and on official trips, and she frequently points out during briefings when she has last spoken to Trump. She holds briefings at least every week, but her positive test ensures that those appearances will inevitably be put off for the time being.

She is also the mother of a young daughter, and she has been open about breast cancer running in her family, speaking at the Republican National Convention about her decision to undergo a preventative mastectomy.

Trump returns to Oval Office, breaking isolation
after his hospitalization for coronavirus

CNN
By Kevin Liptak
October 7, 2020

Washington (CNN)

President Donald Trump returned to the Oval Office on Wednesday, breaking isolation after his hospitalization for coronavirus and as an ongoing outbreak rips through his staff.

The White House said he was being briefed on a looming hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico and stimulus talks, though Trump himself scrapped talks on additional aid a day earlier.

Unsatisfied with the temporary office space erected for him in the White House residence, where he was isolating after returning from three days in the hospital, Trump had been itching to return to the Oval Office since Tuesday but aides convinced him to stay put.

In a new memo released midday Wednesday, Trump's doctor relayed the President saying "I feel great!" and reported he had been symptom-free for 24 hours. But the memo declined again to provide critical information such as when Trump last tested negative, what his lung scans show and whether he is still on the steroid dexamethasone or any other medications that could be masking his symptoms.

Trump's "schedule right now is fluid, we're looking at his prognosis," chief of staff Mark Meadows told reporters earlier at the White House. "If he decides to go to the Oval, we've got safety protocols there."

More than 15 members of Trump's staff or inner-circle have tested positive in recent days, including his wife, senior adviser, press secretary, campaign manager, former counselor, personal assistant, four press aides, three Republican senators and a member of the military who directly serves the President.

Barron Trump contracted coronavirus, showed 'no symptoms'

President Trump and first lady Melania Trump's son Barron also tested positive for COVID-19. When Trump and the first lady tested positive two weeks ago, Trump's eldest children all reported testing negative for the virus even after being near their father at the presidential debate earlier that week.

Barron tested positive after an initial negative test,
Melania Trump said in a Wednesday letter. As a "strong teenager," Barron "exhibited no symptoms," Melania wrote. He has since tested negative, as has the president. "In one way I was glad the three of us went through this at the same time so we could take care of one another and spend time together," Melania added. In a Wednesday press conference, Trump told reporters Barron was "fine."
