Tracy Chapman Reacts To Luke Combs' Cover of 'Fast Car': Exclusive. Combs' version has generated at least $500,000 in global publishing royalties, Billboard estimates, with the bulk going to Chapman, who owns both the writer's and publisher's share of the song.

Did she take ALL of Luke’s publishing like she did Nice and Smooth.

Yes one hit can be a beautiful thing....I'll take one hit like "I like big butts and I can not lie....",or even "Ice Ice baby..."

The movie battleship was on and I heard the song "25 lighters on my dresser,yeeesssirrr...." and it was a rock dude singing it.

Never knew she got ALL the publishing of that song by Nice and Smooth. Damn. Smart woman. And now she's getting paid all over again...30+ years after the song came out. Kudos to her

Yup

Wonder how come this guy gets a percentage?

Funny she let Action Bronson get a percentage (allegedly) when he used another one of her hits

Nice and Smooth didn't get nothing?

Probably did what Peter Gunz and Lord Tariq did. Used it without permission. They didn't get any of their publishing either.

Yup they cleared it.

You already know this ain't my preferred source but...

He told this story many times before

And honestly I understand

But its a two way street these original artists need to remember that by these rappers etc sampling remaking their songs they create a revenue stream and potential licensing and advertising opportunities that may have never existed before.

Good for her but never understood the appeal of the song. It was trash when it came out and its still trash.

Some of these artists just don’t allow artists to cake off it. I know for sure Sting don’t. Juiceworld didn’t make a dime off Lucid Dream.

Some of these artists just be getting all of it though im not sure if it came from lack of permission or if Steely Dan just want their bread.

That’s how it’s suppose to be. Sting got all that bread from Juice World and Puff. To me this should encourage artists to be more creative and less biting.
DJ Toomp was telling me that MJ let him use "PYT" when he was producing for Kanye, and MJ made them break major bread. My dude Byron produced "Champion" for Kanye, and Steely Dan gave permission, but he didn't make dime off of that song. He said he was cool with it, because at the time, he was trying to build up his resume'.

In the case of Steely Dan, they didn't get permission. A friend of mine was in the studio when they were doing that song. Somebody brought up the idea of getting clearance for that sample, and one of them said, "Fuck them! Shit, don't nobody know who they are. We're doing them a favor!" :smh: Steely Dan waited until that song became too big to pull back, and then came calling.

I was wondering did Steely take Kanye shit too for
Champions….

It’s crazy because Prince will take 50/50
But Tracy Chapman wants 100….crazy….but I can understand it.

Damn that’s some sad shit but it seems it wouldn’t have mattered Kanye asked for permission and begged Steely Dan and barely got permission just not to make any money but shit he didn’t drop it as a single so I guess it didn’t sting as much.

Actually, it was Byron that had to get permission, since he produced the track. He called me one day to get to them, because I had a connect with their bass player, and he reached out to Steely Dan for Byron.

Son of a bitch my fave nice and smooth track… the beat, the 2nd verse, the spinning gun, the bright lights.. how dare they not get nothing for that masterpiece

You already know Nice & Smooth one of favorite all time rap groups.

I get it though ESPECAILLY at THAT time.

James and George Clinton and Bootsy all GOT IT and understood EARLY (Prince and Elton too)

they UNDERSTOOD what hip hop culture was DJing and sampling

and how it actually MADE them money in all ways

I ALSO understood Stevie usually saying f*ck no because he didn't like all the cursing etc. cause that is REAL

and also if you just DON'T want someone to use it... that's fine too.

Or taking ALL the money, ok THAT one I have a LITTLE BIT of issue with... I see you Sting.

Its ALL good

(Puff just gonna find a way to replay the interpolation anyway)

I HATE producers just STEALING the sample though permission.

But its always interesting when the original artist makes all these HUGE declarations about nobody EVER using it and the reasons why

BUT when it comes to a a BLACK ARTIST...

suddenly a white artist isn't held to the same standards?

I am NOT saying Tracy is doing that here

because it is WELL documented how Nicki disrespected her about a sample and it really hurt her feelings.

That's why I don't mind dudes over charging Sheeran and them for what they did.

Its THEIR MUSIC they can do whatever they want with you.

But I don't like the disrespect of the artform when they decide not to do it.
