This was in 1984...

He was outspoken, refused to conform and an independent thinker.

He got straight A's and got early acceptance into Harvard, Vanderbilt, Stanford & Duke.

Was a vegetarian. Only eats brown rice. Explains how meat contributes to many illnesses.

And questioned the medical establishment's lack of emphasis on the importance of diet/healthy living and notes excessive medical expenses.

OBAMAMCARE?

And questioned the morals of the modern legal system.

(he messed up with the sexist comment though... )

Listen to the audience's reactions...they laugh HARD at his views and thoughts.

Funny how much of his views were spot on and are actually considered the norm NOW!

I wonder if the writers hadn't decided to tack on that silly sexist argument which kinda goes against how intelligent they portrayed him how he would be looked at.

None of these concepts of ACA aka Obamacare is new and many have argued about this stuff for decades. Judging from the reaction on Obamacare in today's society his viewpoints from 1984 would be considered extremely left wing liberal rhetoric.

The rise of the conservative movement since the first Bush election has severely impacted the perception of liberal vs. conservative for stupid Americans which gave birth to the Tea Party. I would even say it has set things back because what is presented now is extreme liberal on one front and extreme conservative nut jobs on the other front.

What really got me was the laughter at his thoughts and views.

As if what he was saying was completely foreign and laughable.

When challenged medical expenses the audience didn't even know whether to laugh.

Surprised that a smart black young man was played for laughs back then, especially on the Cosby show.

Haha.

I thoroughly enjoyed this clip. The brother shares some similar viewpoints that I embrace.

You do realize he was supposed to be around 16. What does he really know? Everything was still being provided for him. It would have been interesting if say he was real and we could fast forward to say 1994 and life got in his ass.

It's easy to be the smartest guy in the room when everything is provided for you and you think you don't need to play ball to win.

Wait you mean to tell me that wasn't a young Obama in that clip... Looks just like him..

Its amazing those writers had him say those things so long ago...

good point...

but it was WHAT they had him say was so eye opening...

everything they said particularly about health and diet and the medical profession were spot on and the audience thought it was funny.

All I could say was LORD HAVE MERCY.......I'm blessed.
This took me back to when I was that young man. Now, my family is almost exactly like the Cosby family. On a Professional sense. My oldest is currently a Senior in H.S. I will revisit some of these episodes to reaffirm to my kids, that..."nothing is really new, just a different twist on the old". Just like my Granddad use to say.

Thanks OP

Remember it was Reagan who actually made "liberal" a dirty word (Bush solidified it when he ran against Dukakis in '88), they were aligned with Jimmy Carter who was viewed as soft after being thoroughly embarrassed for 444 days by the Iran hostage situation, he also wasn't too popular among athletes for pulling out of the 1980 Summer Olympics, and with the entire US military for instituting a wage freeze, and lets not forget the military industrial complex was pissed as well for him putting the kibosh on the B-2 bomber.

Bingo.

the affordable care act, aka, "Obama-care," is actually from the heritage foundation, a conservative think tank.

the original plan was put together by pres. nixon way back in the day. yes, it was a republican idea and its mature status was universal healthcare.

but the democrats opposed it and killed it dead.

now, the roles are reversed and the conservatives are mad as hell. trust me, if the president was white and republican, they'd be praising this law.

It's funny within context of the show.

c/s

It's funny within context of the show.

true

but also in the minds of the audience who found his thoughts and lifestyle "funny".

But if a young man talked like this NOW?
smart educated independent defiant

No one would notice and actually he would be loved...

beside the sexist stuff.

I say the kid was out of line for negatively criticizing what they do for a living at their own dinner table. Most parents would get salty at that no matter how right he may be...especially at that age.

On another note....Claire is still as fine as I remember. ;)

The power of the media under the Cosby brand. I really don't think people understand the true impact this ninja has had on our (all of) society, despite what you think of him in present day.

He is/was a media genius!

Great episode!

He made some very valid points.

Didn't agree with the sexist comment though.
