When Bill Withers wrote "Who is he and what is he to you?", I knew he was about to kill her cheatin' fine ass. Instead he just said "fuck it, I'm out".

I didn't like this show. It was a very precursor to the "Niggas aint shit and leave their kids" trope that became very popular in black media afterwards to this day....even if the main character is trying to get his family back during the show.

It actually started earlier than that with Diahann Carrol’s “Julia” and “Claudine”.

Yeah, man... Denise was fine as wine.

I heard that Bill Withers used to put hands on her because he was so jealous.

In Julia she was widowed. Her Husband died a war hero in Vietnam saving his platoon. That was a positive, though not present, black male influence.

Claudine never showed the baby fathers, but did show a good black man(James Earl Jones) who was willing to take on her and her kids.

This show was one of the first examples of a no good nigga front and center on screen. It became very common after this show in particular because it took a white couple of show runners to have the confidence to show a distinctly negative black trope in media in that way.

I watch way too much TV

As a child, I attended her and Bill Withers' wedding in the 70s. It was a "Lovely Day" per Denise back in the day.

Unfortunately, their marriage dis not last more than one year.
From what I heard, he didn't really love her. She was just arm candy for him . She is a very pretty woman.

I heard he used to beat her ass too

What was your connection if I can ask? How did you end up at the wedding as a child??

I think you might be looking at the show the wrong way, dude.

#1. It's about a brother trying to get his family BACK after initially running out on them. He's a former loser who's now trying to make amends and win his family back.
#2. Rather than becoming a bitter, Black man hating swirler, the ex-wife found love (or at least a somewhat stable relationship) with another Black man.
#3. A good, upstanding Black man stepped up and was attempting to be a good husband/father for both her and her children. (Even though he was deemed comic relief and the butt of every joke).

Essentially, this match up was very much the same dynamic as Cleveland Brown vs Robert Tubbs in the Cleveland Show.

The cool brother vs the square, upstanding family oriented brother who stepped up.

Just sayin'... :dunno:

Bill and my dad went to WVU together. The family attended the wedding.
