Trump also used the interview to land new blows on potential rivals for the nomination – especially Haley, who had previously said she wouldn’t run against him.

“She’s a very ambitious person. She just couldn’t stay in a seat. I said, ‘You know what, Nikki, if you want to run, you go ahead and run,’” Trump told Hewitt. And he also took a jab at Pompeo and his new autobiography.

“I haven’t seen the book yet. I haven’t read it, though I heard he was generally nice. … He took a little bit more credit than he should, but that’s OK with me,” Trump said, before adding: “We did a great job. I got along very well with Mike.”

Haley is expected to launch a campaign on February 15 in Charleston, a source familiar with her plans told CNN Tuesday. Pompeo, promoting his score-settling new book on the conservative media circuit, is making the kind of political throat-clearing noises typical of would-be candidates. And South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott is setting off on a listening tour focusing on faith. The first two stops just happen to include Iowa and his own state – early voting pillars that will frame the GOP primary contest early next year.

It’s official: Nikki Haley running for president. Formal announcement Feb. 15

63d9ce059bd3d.image.jpg

Cementing what has been in the works for months, former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley will formally announce she is running for president and will seek the Republican nomination for her party’s 2024 ticket, The Post and Courier has learned.

According to an invitation soon going out to her backers, Haley’s advertised “special announcement” will come Feb. 15 at the The Shed at the Charleston Visitor Center, a downtown gathering spot that could draw hundreds of supporters into the heart of the city’s tourism district.

The confirmation she is entering the race came Jan. 31 from a member of Haley’s inner circle.

Haley has teased at running for the White House for months, increasing her footprint on social media and in national interviews that she was leaning toward an official bid.

Long identified as harboring presidential intentions for the past decade, she becomes the second announced profile Republican looking to knock off Democratic President Joe Biden next year, just behind her former boss from when she was U.N. ambassador, previous White House occupant Donald Trump.

Haley famously said earlier she would not seek to challenge Trump if he ran again, but her message has since shifted to say the country needs to look toward a different path.

“It’s time for a new generation,” she telegraphed on Twitter in recent days. “It’s time for new leadership. And it’s time to take our country back. America is worth the fight — and we’re just getting started.”

During an interview on Fox News with Bret Baier last week, Haley signaled her clearest indication yet that she was readying a White House bid.

“When you’re looking at a run for president, you look at two things. You first look at does the current situation push for new leadership? The second question is, ‘Am I that person that could be that new leader?’”

Answering those two questions, Haley said: “Yes, we need to go in a new direction. And can I be that leader? Yes. I think I can be that leader.”

Haley, 51, does not have far to travel for her announcement. She has been a Charleston County resident and registered voter since leaving her United Nations ambassador post in 2018, living with her family on Kiawah Island.

She has also boasted in recent times that she has never lost a political race, including from her days in the S.C. House of Representatives or from her two runs for governor, an office she held from 2011-17.

It also appears she was alerting Trump in the past week of her leanings.

During his weekend campaign swing that included a stop at the S.C. Statehouse, Trump told national reporters he recently received a phone call from Haley. Trump said Haley told him “she’d like to consider” a 2024 run of her own.

“I talked to her for a little while. I said, ‘Look, you know, go by your heart if you want to run,’” Trump told reporters, adding that he would welcome the competition.

“She called me and said she’d like to consider it, and I said you should do it.”

Trump then reportedly told Haley, “Go by your heart if you want to run.”

Haley joins a potentially expansive field of Republicans said to be eager to challenge Biden. They most visibly include Trump, former Vice President Mike Pence, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, former U.S. Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming, and Mike Pompeo, the former CIA director who later served as secretary of state under Trump.

U.S. Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., may also be in the mix.

Haley follows two other South Carolinians who ran for the White House in recent cycles: U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham and former Gov. Mark Sanford. Both attempts fizzled out early.

Haley’s South Carolina bio begins with her growing up in Bamberg, a daughter of Indian immigrant parents. She graduated from Clemson University with an accounting degree and worked for a waste management company before joining her family’s dress shop, which eventually moved from Orangeburg to Lexington.

Haley has said her start in politics was inspired at an event that included Hillary Clinton and, in 2004, she ran for a state House seat held by the longest-serving lawmaker at the time and beat him — starting a string of undefeated runs for office. Haley did not agree with Clinton’s policies but felt inspired that women should “dare to compete” in the political arena.

Her most remarkable act during her six-year tenure in the House was helping lead a push for on-the-record voting. She surprised political pundits in announcing a bid for governor in 2009, but she fashioned herself as an heir to then-Gov. Sanford with calls for fiscal conservatism and smaller government.

She also was aided by the tea party wave that won over many GOP voters during the 2010 election cycle. Haley was polling poorly in a Republican field dominated by men — U.S. Rep. Gresham Barrett, Lt. Gov. Andrew Bauer and then-state Attorney General Henry McMaster. But her campaign turned around with an endorsement by Sarah Palin, the former Republican vice presidential hopeful who was one of the GOP’s most popular figures at the time.

Several highlights of her term as governor include helping win large economic deals, including several major tire makers, and appointing Scott as South Carolina’s first Black U.S. senator.

Haley became a national celebrity when she worked to get the Confederate battle flag removed from the Statehouse grounds in 2015 after an avowed racist murdered nine worshippers at Charleston’s Emanuel AME Church.

Though she endorsed U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida in the 2016 presidential race and even criticized Trump for his behavior, Trump offered Haley a spot in his Cabinet, eventually taking the post as U.N. ambassador.

After leaving the administration, she started an advocacy group, Stand for America, that helped build her brand and had a brief stint on board of Boeing, which has a jet manufacturing plant in North Charleston.

She also has spent months campaigning for Republican candidates across the country, often hitting Iowa, typically the first presidential primary state.

She made headlines for criticizing Trump for not doing more to stop the Jan. 6 Capitol riots, suggesting in a “Politico” interview that he “lost any sort of political viability” and would not run again.

Trump Plans to Bring Back Firing Squads, Group Executions if He Retakes White House
The former president wants to expand the use of the death penalty, and expand the federal government's options for carrying out death sentences

trump-firing-squads.jpg

“What do you think of firing squads?”

That’s the question Donald Trump repeatedly asked some close associates in the run-up to the 2024 presidential campaign, three people familiar with the situation tell Rolling Stone.

It’s not an idle inquiry: The former president, if re-elected, is still committed to expanding the use of the federal death penalty and bringing back banned methods of execution, the sources say. He has even, one of the sources recounts, mused about televising footage of executions, including showing condemned prisoners in the final moments of their lives.

Specifically, Trump has talked about bringing back death by firing squad, by hanging, and, according to two of the sources, possibly even by guillotine. He has also, sources say, discussed group executions. Trump has floated these ideas while discussing planned campaign rhetoric and policy desires, as well as his disdain for President Biden’s approach to crime.

In at least one instance late last year, according to the third source, who has direct knowledge of the matter, Trump privately mused about the possibility of creating a flashy, government-backed video-ad campaign that would accompany a federal revival of these execution methods. In Trump’s vision, these videos would include footage from these new executions, if not from the exact moments of death. “The [former] president believes this would help put the fear of God into violent criminals,” this source says. “He wanted to do some of these [things] when he was in office, but for whatever reasons didn’t have the chance.”

A Trump spokesman denies Trump had mused about a video-ad campaign. “More ridiculous and fake news from idiots who have no idea what they’re talking about,” the spokesman writes in an email. “Either these people are fabricating lies out of thin air, or Rolling Stone is allowing themselves to be duped by these morons.”

Trump’s enthusiasm for grisly video campaigns has been documented before, including in an anecdote from a former aide that had the then-president demanding footage of “people dying in a ditch” and “bodies stacked on top of bodies” so that his administration could “scare kids so much that they will never touch a single drug in their entire life.”

Asked about firing squads and other execution methods, the spokesman refers Rolling Stone to lines from Trump’s 2024 campaign announcement. “Every drug dealer during his or her life, on average, will kill 500 people with the drugs they sell, not to mention the destruction of families. We’re going to be asking everyone who sells drugs, gets caught selling drugs, to receive the death penalty for their pain.”

At an October rally — to cheers and applause from his audience — Trump pitched a form of supposed justice that has been embraced by some brutal dictatorships. “And if [the drug dealer is] guilty, they get executed, and they send the bullet to the family and they want the family to pay for the cost of the bullet,” Trump said at the rally. “If you want to stop the drug epidemic in this country, you better do that … [even if] it doesn’t sound nice.”

The former president’s zeal for the death penalty has already proven lethal. During the final months of his administration, he oversaw the executions of 13 federal prisoners. Since 1963, only three federal prisoners had been executed, including Oklahoma City bomber and mass murderer Timothy McVeigh. In January 2021, in the final stretch before Biden would become president, Trump oversaw three executions in four days.

“In conversations I’d been in the room for, President Trump would explicitly say that he’d love a country that was totally an ‘eye for an eye’ — that’s a direct quote — criminal-justice system, and he’d talk about how the ‘right’ way to do it is to line up criminals and drug dealers before a firing squad,” says a former Trump White House official.

“You just got to kill these people,” Trump would stress, this ex-official notes.

“He had a particular affinity for the firing squad, because it seemed more dramatic, rather than how we do it, putting a syringe in people and putting them to sleep,” the former White House official adds. “He was big on the idea of executing large numbers of drug dealers and drug lords because he’d say, ‘These people don’t care about anything,’ and that they run their drug empire and their deals from prison anyways, and then they get back out on the street, get all their money again, and keep committing crimes … and therefore, they need to be eradicated, not jailed.”

Trump’s firing-squad fixation may address his desire for the “dramatic,” but some experts believe that an instant death-by-gunshot may be more humane than lethal injection. “There’s pain, certainly, but it’s transient,” according to Dr. Jonathan Groner, a professor of surgery at the Ohio State University College of Medicine. “If you’re shot in the chest and your heart stops functioning, it’s just seconds until you lose consciousness.”

Rules made during Trump’s presidency made federal firing squads more feasible. Previously, lethal injection was the only permissible federal method of execution. But under the administration’s new rules, if lethal injections are made legally or logistically unavailable, the federal government can use any method that is legal in the state where the execution is located.

The rule took effect on Dec. 24, 2020, and thus far has not been applied: All 13 Trump-era executions were done by lethal injection. But the expanded methods of execution could be relevant in the future. Opponents of the death penalty have pushed drugmakers to withhold the drugs needed to conduct lethal injections, complicating efforts to impose capital punishment. In Indiana, home to the Terre Haute facility where most federal executions are conducted, the new policies “legally open the door for the authorized use of firing squads, electrocution, or the gas chamber,” the Indianapolis Star reported at the time.

Former Attorney General Bill Barr, the ideological architect of Trump’s execution binge, told Rolling Stone in December that Trump and his administration would have had more people put to death soon, had he won a second term in 2020. “Yes — that was the expectation,” Barr succinctly summarized in a phone interview.

There are 44 men on federal death row. The only woman on federal death row in modern times was Lisa Montgomery, whom Trump and Barr put to death on Jan. 13, 2020.

There could soon be a 45th prisoner on federal death row. The Justice Department is seeking the death penalty for convicted domestic terrorist Sayfullo Saipov, who steered a truck onto a bike path and pedestrian walkway in New York City on Halloween in 2017, and is set to be sentenced in federal court in the days ahead. Biden and his attorney general, Merrick Garland, implemented a moratorium on capital punishment, but the sentence would leave Saipov eligible for execution under a future president.

Trump vows to 'stop' gender-affirming care for minors if re-elected president
Trump said he would also push schools to “promote positive education about the nuclear family” and “the roles of mothers and fathers."

Former President Donald Trump vowed in a video released Tuesday that, if he is re-elected, he will punish doctors who provide gender-affirming care to minors and push schools to “promote positive education about the nuclear family” and “the roles of mothers and fathers” as part of a wide-ranging set of policies to use federal power to target transgender people.

In a straight-to-camera video posted on his Truth Social platform, Trump said he would task several federal agencies to police and ultimately “stop” gender-affirming care for minors, which he equated to “child abuse” and “child sexual mutilation.”

He said he would also prohibit any federal agency from working to “promote the concept of sex and gender transition at any age," not just for minors.

The proposals are likely to be met with staunch opposition from LGBTQ rights advocates, who are fighting similar ideas across the country, calling them detrimental to trans people.

Gender-affirming care, according to the Department of Health and Human Services, “consists of an array of services that may include medical, surgical, mental health, and non-medical services for transgender and nonbinary people.”

Trump’s proposals are among the most draconian compared to the many that have circulated in state capitols in recent years, going so far as to suggest that he would push for a federal law recognizing only two genders.

Trump said he would push Congress to pass a law banning gender-affirming care for minors nationwide, order the Justice Department to investigate the pharmaceutical industry and hospitals to see whether they “deliberately covered up horrific long-term side effects of sex transitions in order to get rich” and cut off doctors from Medicare and Medicaid — a potential career-ender for many doctors — if they treat trans youths with hormones or surgery.

In addition, he said he would make it easier for patients who later regret having received gender-affirming care as minors to sue their doctors, calling the procedures “unforgivable.”

Trump also said his policy changes would extend to education.

He has already vowed to create a “new credentialing body for teachers” regarding the teaching of race history, adding that the panel would “promote positive education about the nuclear family, the roles of mothers and fathers and celebrating, rather than erasing, the things that make men and women different.”

He said his Education Department would impose “severe consequences” on any teachers or school officials who “suggest to a child that they could be trapped in the wrong body,” which could include civil rights penalties for the individuals and a loss of federal funding for schools.

“The left-wing gender insanity being pushed at our children is an act of child abuse. Very simple. Here’s my plan to stop the chemical, physical and emotional mutilation of our youth,” Trump said.

Trump is looking to reignite momentum for his second presidential campaign as conservatives nationwide have become increasingly concerned about trans issues, especially gender-affirming care for minors.

The hard-line stance is a departure for Trump, who distinguished himself from more traditional social conservatives in the 2016 Republican presidential primaries by openly courting LGBTQ voters.

Trump, a former Democratic donor from New York City, said in 2016 that he was “fine” with same-sex marriage and that he would be a “real friend” of the LGBTQ community. He has bragged about how he “did great with the gay population,” compared to other Republican presidential candidates.

Five Republican-leaning states have enacted bans or restrictions on gender-affirming care for minors over the past two years: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Tennessee and Utah.

Legislators in at least 21 states have proposed bills this year to ban or restrict gender-affirming care for minors.

Judges have blocked the laws in Alabama and Arkansas, pending the outcomes of lawsuits.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Utah and the National Center for Lesbian Rights have said they plan to sue Utah within two weeks over its law, which the governor signed Saturday.

Major medical organizations — including the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Psychological Association — have supported gender-affirming care for minors.

Trump vows to 'stop' gender-affirming care for minors if re-elected president (nbcnews.com)

I think he should focus on more serious, real things when it comes to education, like the Unicorn Wars of 1517.

Donald Trump to visit East Palestine, Ohio, after toxic train derailment, son says

EAST PALESTINE, Ohio (WOIO/Gray News) - Former President Donald Trump is expected to travel to East Palestine, Ohio, next week following the 50-car train derailment there, according to a tweet on Friday from his son, Donald Trump Jr.

“Breaking News: Trump will visit East Palestine, Ohio next week,” Trump Jr. wrote. “If our ‘leaders’ are too afraid to actually lead real leaders will step up and fill the void.”

The visit from the 45th president, who previously announced his presidential bid for 2024, comes after it was announced that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention would head to the area for public health testing at the direction of the Biden administration.
The train, containing the toxic chemical vinyl chloride, derailed on Feb. 3. Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine issued an urgent evacuation notice on Feb. 5.

Officials conducted a controlled burn of the toxic vinyl chloride on Feb. 6.

The only good to come out of this is trump and ron death sentence airing each other's dirty laundry. They both have only the fringe lunatic element behind them. Doesn't mean we can relax our vigil but I wouldn't be too worried about them.

The interesting question is - if trump is indicted, as he should have been a dozen times by now, where the hell can they find an impartial jury?

Former President Donald Trump has a regular DJ-ing slot every Thursday night at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, Page Six reported.

"Members know this, and when they invite guests, they say, 'Let's have dinner on Thursday, because Trump DJs every Thursday,' as an event," a source told the outlet.

The former president DJs "on an iPad — usually from his table — so he eats and plays," the source said.

He particularly enjoys playing songs from the '80s, and Broadway songs such as Phantom of the Opera and Céline Dion's "My Heart Will Go On" from the movie "Titanic."

Trump has previously been advertised as DJ for special events at Mar-a-Lago.

Last year, the former president talked about his love of DJing and said that his top song for getting people on the dance floor is "Y.M.C.A." by the Village People.

"People love it when I do it," Trump told YouTubers the NELK Boys for their "Full Send Podcast."

"You know what gets 'em rocking? 'Y.M.C.A.,'" Trump said. "'Y.M.C.A.,'" the gay national anthem. Did you ever hear that? They call it the gay national anthem. But 'Y.M.C.A.' gets people up, and it gets 'em moving.'"

"I've always had a high aptitude for music," he said. "But I love great music."

Ever since Trump announced his plans to run for president again in November, reports have suggested he has rarely strayed from Mar-a-Lago.

Singin’ the coups: Donald Trump releases single with January 6 prisoners

Former president drops charity song on streaming sites recorded with men imprisoned for their role in attack on US Capitol

4000.jpg

Donald Trump has recorded himself reciting the Pledge of Allegiance interspersed with a male voice choir singing The Star-Spangled Banner.

Donald Trump has released a charity single, recorded with a choir of men held in a Washington DC prison for their parts in the deadly January 6 insurrection he incited.

On Friday, Justice for All by Donald J Trump and the J6 Prison Choir was available on streaming platforms including Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube.

The move is the latest in a growing trend by Trump and others on the far right of US politics to embrace the January 6 attack on the Capitol as a political cause and portray many of those who carried it out as protesters being persecuted by the state.

Forbes, which first reported the song’s production, said a video would debut on a podcast hosted by Steve Bannon, the far-right activist and alleged fraudster who was Trump’s campaign chair and White House strategist.

Over an ambient backing, the song features Trump reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, interspersed with a male voice choir singing The Star-Spangled Banner. The song lasts for about two and a half minutes and ends with a chant of “U-S-A! U-S-A! U-S-A!” Forbes said it was “produced by a major recording artist who was not identified”.

Robert Maguire, research director for the watchdog Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, said: “I have never been more repulsed by the mere existence of a song than one sung by a president who tried to do a coup and a literal ‘choir’ of insurrectionists who tried to help him.”

Barb McQuade, a University of Michigan law professor and former US attorney, called the song “a disinformation tactic right out of the authoritarian playbook”.

Trump, she said, was seeking to “wrap lies in patriotism”.

Donald Trump proposes 10 new 'Freedom Cities' featuring futuristic flying cars in a new campaign video

  • Donald Trump called for a "quantum leap" in the American standard of living on Friday.
  • He laid out campaign proposals for new 'freedom cities' and investment in flying cars.
  • Trump said the US had "lost its boldness," but under his leadership, it would be "back in a very big way."
Former president and 2024 Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump laid out futuristic urban development proposals on Friday, calling for a "quantum leap" in the American standard of living.

In the typical fashion of the former real estate developer and television star, his proposals were out of the norm of traditional presidential plans. In a video released on Truth Social, Trump called for investment in vertical take-off and landing vehicles — flying cars, in layman's terms — as well as a national contest to design and create ten new "freedom cities" to be built from scratch on government-owned land.

"Just as the United States led the automotive revolution in the last century, I want to ensure that America — not China — leads this revolution in air mobility," Trump, wearing his trademark red tie and flanked by two US flags, said in the video.

"These breakthroughs can transform commerce, bring a giant infusion of wealth into rural America, and connect families and our country in new ways."

Trump added that the US had recently "lost its boldness" but assured that "under my leadership, we will get it back in a very big way. If you look at just three years ago, what we were doing was unthinkable, how good it was, how great it was for our country."

The Trump campaign said that ten cities the size of Washington, DC, could be built on just 0.06% of "empty" federal land, according to a press release entitled "Agenda47" which would give American families "a new opportunity for home ownership and the American Dream."

Trump also said he would encourage a "baby boom" if elected president in the next term, giving money to new parents called "baby bonuses."

The four-minute video was light on details of how the visionary plan would come to fruition, and Trump campaign advisers conceded the new set of plans was unusual, according to reporting by Politico.

They added, however, that Trump was not the first American president to make grand propositions — highlighting Abraham Lincoln's campaign for the transcontinental railroad and Teddy Roosevelt's national park service.

Investment in vertical take-off and landing vehicles is not as outlandish as it may seem. They are in the early stages of development but are not expected to be available soon.

The latest plan for Trump's 2024 campaign came one day before he is set to address the Conservative Political Action Conference, a four-day gathering for Republican officials and right-wing activists at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland.
