The issue of racism has gone largely unaddressed by this year’s nominees for president, but there’s no question that many voters see the contest in black and white. Racism runs deep and wide in America, despite the better angels of our nature and the bitter divisions of our past. Anyone searching for evidence won’t have to look far — you can find it in your neighborhood, if not at your own breakfast table. But where is bigotry most rampant? Which cities are America’s most racist?

Drew Magary, an editor at Gawker, wants to find out. After penning a piece on the Five Most Racist Cities in America — naming Birmingham, Boston, Phoenix, New York and Cincinnati — Magary drew comments from users complaining that their city did not make his original, admittedly unscientific list. Surely there are cities more deserving of the title, they balked, where ignorance runs through like it’s in the water supply. To be sure he doesn’t show any bias to one metropolis over the next, Magary has invited readers to help in the Search for the Most Racist City in America.

Initial candidates in the racist-city census have been posted this week. First up is Philadelphia. The City of Brotherly Love, Magary notes, has been home to historic race riots, and deified mayor Frank Rizzo had a volatile relationship with Philly’s African-American community during his tenure in the ‘70s. The horrific MOVE incident of 1978, in which police dropped a bomb from a helicopter to end a racially fired confrontation — killing 11 people, including 5 children — also helps earn Philly an ignoble distinction. Boston was next to be dishonored, with a nod to the Sox for being the last MLB team to integrate their roster, followed by St. Louis, with a note from one Missourian about how the city is carved up into black and white sections “like a checkerboard.”

Racism comes in all different colors, so to speak, and your city may make a winning candidate whether it’s woven through with longstanding, institutionalized racism, racism acquired based on personal experiences, or what-not-me denial. So show some love and tell them where you see hate.
Good thing, at least, that racism is contained within city lines. All clear in the 'burbs.

How can you put Philly first based on some shit that happened 40 years ago? This has to be the worlds laziest reporting job.

Racism can't be contained, whites hate blacks period. .

Yep, always have

I could think of a lot of reason why a black person wouldnt like a white person

Shit has happened and is still happening

But what are the reasons that whites have always hated blacks?

That's the question

Really Philly? The racism is 10x worst in south jersey than Philly. Most of the white people (neighbors, coworkers, people at the gym) I know seem alright. Mufuckas in Jersey though...it's only a matter of time before I have to fuck one of them up.

Buffalo, Boston and Cincinnati I would def think would be in the top three. I have heard a lot about those three cities over the years. Probably NYC as well.

White people think that we are defiant and know our place in the race hierarchy.

Hating people based solely on their skin color is a massive waste of energy.

I'm glad my parents raised me to assess people on their individual behavior & not to generalize.

Cities...??? :smh: Racism is a global, national and local system. Confining it to cities is just a way of deceiving non-white people.

It's Miami. Most segregated area ever. Cubans hate other Cubans. Cuban hate Jamaicans, Haitians, whites, blacks, Asians, you name it. White hate anything that speaks Spanish or is from an island. Africans are shitted on openly. Miami is a money or status town. If you don't have either, you're shit on down there.

philly is a shitty town and tough dating spot for a progressive black dude. If it's not the black santas trying to kill you, it's the crackers trying to fuck you over.

If only whites were taught like you.

Black people are the original people of the world. And we are God, the problem is that we are not ourselves right now. And the world is controlled by white people, which they are the devil. And you are looking at a world that is controlled by witchcraft, sorcery, and falsehood. We eat like white people, think like white people and live by the same values and mourns as white people. So where ever you at things are the same. It may be hidden or it may show.
Here in Alabama this has got to be the worse state in the world. The southern values are greatly administered here. Alabama history is known all over the world. So you would think blacks in Alabama would have woke up by now. I do what I can to build a nation for blacks here in the dirty south. But there is always the danger of blacks getting their true identity back. Here blacks will go against their real help. They have a reason to when you see no way out and no power in the force that is to deliver you from what controls you now.
