NBA sources confirm to WDSU the Pelicans have had internal discussions about promoting assistant coach Teresa Weatherspoon to head coach.
On Wednesday the Pelicans parted ways with head coach Stan Van Gundy after just one season. The Pels finished the 2020-2021 campaign 31-41 overall and missed the playoffs for a third straight year.
An NCAA National Champion player at Louisiana Tech who played professionally overseas and in the WNBA, Weatherspoon was inducted into the Naismith Hall of Fame in 2019.
She has served as an assistant coach with the Pelicans since 2019, first on head coach Alvin Gentry's staff and then with Van Gundy.
Pelicans players such as Zion Williamson routinely single out "Spoon" for the work she does with the franchise.
If Weatherspoon is promoted to head coach she will be the first woman to serve as a head coach in a men's professional sport.
Most recently the head coach of the Louisiana Tech Lady Techsters she produced a 99-71 overall record as head coach from 2008-2014.
Sources tell WDSU Charles Lee, an assistant with the Milwaukee Bucks is also a leading candidate to replace Van Gundy as Pelicans head coach.
