The Pittsburgh Steelers announced on Tuesday they are placing linebacker Ryan Shazier on the Reserve/Retired list. This doesn't mean Shazier is no longer part of the Steelers organization but it does mean he has contacted the commissioner's office to make it known he intends to retire. Despite the fact this move marks the end of Shazier's comeback as a player, his recovery has been nothing short of a miracle. The Steelers are a loyal organization and you can be assured Shazier will remain with the team in some capacity

The Pittsburgh Steelers announced on Tuesday they are placing linebacker Ryan Shazier on the Reserve/Retired list. This doesn’t mean Shazier is no longer part of the Steelers organization but it does mean he has contacted the commissioner’s office to make it known he intends to retire. Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert made it clear this was just protocol and Shazier remains part of the organization.
“Ryan’s placement on the Reserve/Retired List serves as a matter of protocol to ensure his continued inclusion within our organization moving forward in his professional career,” Colbert said.
Here is an explanation of the list from Over the Cap.
The retired list is what players are placed upon if they choose to retire rather than honor their contracts. This is more procedural than anything else. The player does not count towards the roster nor do they carry any cap charges as contracts are treated just as if the player was cut for salary cap purposes with prorated bonus money accelerating and being included as “dead money”. Teams do maintain the rights to players on the retired list. These lists are not included on the site.
Despite the fact this move marks the end of Shazier’s comeback as a player, his recovery has been nothing short of a miracle. The Steelers are a loyal organization and you can be assured Shazier will remain with the team in some capacity.

Steelers mortgage the future with restructure of Ben Roethlisberger's contract

The Pittsburgh Steelers are desperate to free up salary cap space. They have made multiple moves including a handful of contract restructures to get themselves under the cap.
Steelers beat writer Gerry Dulac is reporting the Steelers have restructured the contract of quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. Roethlisberger is coming back after missing 14 games in 2019 with an elbow injury. Without Roethlisberger the team finished 8-8 and missed the playoffs.
There are no official details about how much the restructuring will save the Steelers but estimates are it will be close to $10 million for this season. But a deal like this will also push salary into next season. This could make Roethlisberger’s 2021 cap his something in the $40 million range.
Did the Steelers make the right move? A full re-work of Roethlisberger’s deal that wouldn’t cost a fortune in future money would have likely added more years to the deal the Steelers don’t want to be on the hook for with an aging quarterback
