Disney to reveal plans to significantly expand the Star Wars universe

The Star Wars galaxy is about to get far, far bigger.

Disney plans "a significant expansion of the Star Wars universe," including a "Death Star-size trove of coming content," according to a New York Times report Wednesday.

The news comes on the eve of Disney's Investor Day conference, a four-hour event that's expected to include major programming revelations on Thursday afternoon.

On the Star Wars front, there are many headline possibilities.

A third season of The Mandalorian is a given, but not yet announced.

There is sure to be an update on the Obi-Wan Kenobi TV series, which has Ewan McGregor reprising his iconic Jedi Knight role. The project will reportedly air as a six-episode limited series rather than as an ongoing story. The project is set eight years after Revenge of the Sith (and before the events in A New Hope). Filming has been expected to begin in the next few months, so potential casting news, a title, or other details seems likely.

The Cassian Andor series is also overdue for an update. The prequel project has Diego Luna reprising his Rogue One role as a Rebel spy. Alan Tudyk has also been confirmed as reprising his role as the droid K-2SO. Luna recently suggested the project has begun quietly filming in London.
There's also a female-centric series in the works from Russian Doll co-creator Leslye Headland that reportedly is set in a rather different timeline than we've seen before in other Star Wars projects.

Recently there have also been rumors of a Boba Fett series now that Jango Fett actor Temuera Morrison has returned to the Star Wars universe on The Mandalorian.

There's also another animated series in the works, The Bad Batch, which is set after the events in The Clone Wars.

Yet the most exciting announcement will probably not be an update on these existing reports, but rather something entirely new. One area of particular interest is what's next for the franchise in terms of theatrical films in the wake of 2019's Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Or perhaps Disney will completely shift its Star Wars interests to the small screen to bolster Disney+, which has racked up a most impressive 74 million subscribers since launching just over a year ago.

Much more to come Thursday.

The upcoming Whitney Houston biopic has found its star in a galaxy far, far away.
Naomi Ackie, who played the ex-stormtrooper Jannah in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, has been cast as the iconic singer in I Wanna Dance With Somebody, the filmmakers announced Tuesday.
As previously reported, Bohemian Rhapsody's Anthony McCarten is writing the script, and The Photograph director Stella Meghie will helm the film for Sony Pictures and its TriStar division.
Pat Houston, Houston's sister-in-law, will produce the film on behalf of the Houston estate, along with music producer Clive Davis (who discovered Houston), Larry Mestel, Denis O'Sullivan, and Jeff Kalligheri.
"We spent the better part of the last year in an exhaustive search for an actress who could embody Whitney Houston," Meghie said in a statement. "Naomi Ackie impressed us at every stage of the process. I was moved by her ability to capture the stage presence of a global icon while bringing humanity to her interior life."

Davis said Ackie's "screen test was so powerful, it sent shivers up my spine. Although Whitney's incomparable vocals are used for all the songs, Naomi's extraordinary acting range enables her to masterfully capture Whitney's unique charm, star power and, of course, her personal struggles. Naomi is the real deal and I can't imagine a better choice for this iconic role."
In a previous statement about the biopic, which will explore the life and music of the legendary singer, producers said the film won't shy away from the circumstances surrounding Houston's death, and that they were interested in working with McCarten given his sensitivity in approaching past biopics like the Freddie Mercury-centered Bohemian Rhapsody.
In addition to starring in The Rise of Skywalker in 2019, Ackie won a BAFTA Award earlier this year for her role in the series The End of the F***ing World. The British actress was also recently seen in the Education installment of Steve McQueen's Small Axe anthology, and she is set to star in the upcoming thriller The Score.
Before I Wanna Dance With Somebody, the Houston estate teamed up with director Kevin Macdonald for the 2018 documentary Whitney, which featured interviews with members of the star's family and inner circle, including her mother, Cissy Houston, and ex-husband, Bobby Brown. America's Next Top Model alum Yaya DaCosta portrayed Houston in Lifetime's 2015 biopic Whitney, directed by Angela Bassett, while Gabrielle Dennis played Houston in BET's 2018 miniseries The Bobby Brown Story.

I Wanna Dance With Somebody is slated for release over Thanksgiving weekend 2022.

Jeremy Bulloch, who inaugurated the role of Star Wars’ Boba Fett in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, died on December 17, according to his personal website. Bulloch was 75 and died due to ongoing health issues, including Parkinson’s disease, which he lived with for the past several years of his life. He appeared in various British TV shows beginning in his teens, including the family show Billy Bunter of Greyfriars School, and later starred in the soap opera The Newcomers for three years. His foray into science fiction began with the Doctor Who serial The Space Museum in 1965; Bulloch later returned to the series for 1973’s The Time Warrior. He took on the iconic role of Boba Fett in 1980’s The Empire Strikes Back, the second proper Star Wars movie and fifth in the episodic chronology, donning the space bounty hunter’s robotic suit. He returned in 1983’s Return of the Jedi. Bulloch did not voice the character, however — Jason Wingreen first provided the voice, before Temuera Morrison (who originated Fett’s son Jango) did in updated versions.

Around the time of his Star Wars role, Bulloch also played small roles in three James Bond films: first as a submarine crew member in 1977’s The Spy Who Loved Me, then as Q’s assistant Smithers in follow-ups For Your Eyes Only and Octopussy. After playing Fett, he continued to act in British TV series such as Robin of Sherwood and made frequent appearances at Star Wars fan conventions. Bulloch did not go on to play Fett in the Star Wars prequel films, with Daniel Logan taking over the role in Attack of the Clones. “RIP LEGEND ILL NEVER FORGET ALL YOU’VE TAUGHT ME!!” Logan wrote in an Instagram tribute, adding, “MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU ALWAYS.” Bulloch did make a cameo appearance as Captain Colton in 2005’s Revenge of the Sith. Boba Fett, portrayed by Morrison, recently returned to the screen in the second season of the Disney+ series The Mandalorian.
