Wow that is really fucking crazy. Just yesterday my son asked me why I put on the emergency brake every time I park I car. I told him it's because the "park" option is not necessarily the same as putting on the brakes. I also told him I learned to drive in time where using the emergency brakes regularly helped adjust the rear drum brake. More importantly when parking I still put the car in neutral then pull the emergency brake then let go of the foot brake and then put the car in park so the weight of the car doesn't eventually damage the seal on the transmission. Damn shame that kid never used his emergency brake.

Anton Yelchin's Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo never got the fix that very likely could have saved his life ... TMZ has learned.
According to NHTSA docs, obtained by TMZ, the recall on Yelchin's SUV had not been addressed -- meaning he was susceptible to the PARK problem with the shifter.
The recall notice went out on May 14, 2016 ... and says, "Drivers may inadvertently fail to achieve the PARK position before exiting."
As we've reported, the problem is a driver might think the car is safely parked, when it's actually in neutral.

FYI, it's not really a defect. People just weren't pushing the button to engage park when they made a gear selection. Simply moving the lever doesn't put the vehicle in park. If the car isn't operated properly, can't blame on the manufacturer, even if it's not the most intuitive design.
