Chris Berman leaves NFL post at ESPN, will remain with network

Chris Berman, the bombastic, gravelly voice of football for generations of NFL fans, will be departing ESPN’s NFL programming after the conclusion of this year’s postseason. Berman, whose whoops, yelps, and cornball nicknames were an essential part of every broadcast, will remain with the network in other capacities.

“I’m thrilled that this ride will continue, albeit differently,” Berman said in a statement announcing the move, which had been rumored for many months. “Today’s announcement allows me to fulfill perhaps my final professional goal – knowing that I will finish with the team I came in with.”

Berman started at ESPN just a month after the network began operations in 1979. He’s hosted “NFL Countdown” for 31 seasons, and participated in “SportsCenter” in various roles for 38 years. He has also worked the ESPY Awards and hosted events ranging from the Home Run Derby to the U.S. Open. That’s an awful lot of “Back! Back! Back’s! and “Jose ‘Can You See’ Canseco’s.”

Like every other element of ESPN – or, indeed, sports in general – Berman was polarizing, with some viewers appreciating the humor he brought to broadcasts, and others preferring, well … let’s just say preferring other broadcaster options. (For those in the former camp, ESPN is airing a tribute to Berman, “He Did Go All The Way,” on Feb. 2.)

Berman will continue to contribute to ESPN in a smaller capacity, though he will not be hosting NFL shows, the NFL draft, or the Home Run Derby. No replacements have been named.

Never got what made him so great. They tried to sell us that he was the modern day Howard Cosell. I don't think so :smh:

No he is definitely not..
however he was essentially the FIRST.
You cannot take that away
And the whole nick name talking over highlights hell he essentially created the modern ESPN broadcasting format and the Redzone to an extent with NFL Primetime which was one of my all time favorite sports shows..

But they gotta go EASY on his greatness.

Must be a story they need to bury to protect his ass so they let him slide out of frame to soften it. Or his hair plugs hurt.

Before NFL Sunday Ticket came into play Berman and Jackson on primtime as the only way I got to see highlights of all the games back in the day. Berman was the all time best for NFL game highlights especially if you didn't know the score already.

Tick tick tick
Rumbling, stumbling
whoop!
He..... could .....go .....all.... the ....way

You guys are probably more right than me about how great this guy was. I'm older than most of you so when I was a young kat Inside the NFL with Len Dawson and Nick Buoniconti was must see TV, then you also had Howard Cosell giving all of the Highlight at halftime on Monday Night Football, also a must see.

So I stand corrected. NFL prime time was a hell of a show if you look at it through a different set of eyes, cause I liked the show also. Who doesn't like football :)

imo Cosell was the one that gave ABC the idea that a sports channel could work. "He...could...go...all...the...way", is straight up robbery by Berman. Cosell MNF halftime highlights was the shit.
