Sport Dads: Is this bad sportsmanship for 3rd grade youth basketball? Are pro athletes to blame?

Maaaannn we got this one kid on our team who is taller than all the kids even the competition. Dude is slow and awkward moving as fuck. He never gets the rebounds, kids 1ft shorter be jumping up and snatching the rebounds. He'll just stand there with his hands up, not even fully extended. And he's slow.

My son blocked a shot and gave Dikembe Mutombo finger to the other player. He was benched for a whole quarter. But then this is in Europe. Mentality is different around here. You could be as good as MJ, they still want you to be humble.

Personally, I see a lot of this in Ja Morant...he can do that because he's that good. But for kids, I'd say let's watch your stock rise before pounding your chest as the man on the court.

Let em play long enough and they’ll get humbled. Just about everyone is on the same level until around 7th grade.

Then again, these kids today be getting NBA training at 6 years old.

What do think about Durant supporting this but many other NBA players not liking these kids behavior?

Sounds like the same people promoting the no fun league when they didn’t like nfl players dancing after the td.. talking shit and celebrating is part of the game.. if you don’t want your kids emulating these players stop watching it.. oh wait..than there goes the ratings, family time, taking inspiration away from your kid actually liking the sport and make an elementary diabetic fat ass that sits around playing vid games all day which will eventually turn him to a 500 pound virgin incel when he grows up.. damn guess you gonna have to tolerate it or else

I'm kinda of two minds on this one. In sports where the scoring is rarer and generally takes time, celebrations (individually or as a team) make more sense to me. If it's not interrupting the flow of the game or a pure taunt to the opponent, that doesn't bother me.

In other sports (basketball, specifically) where scoring happens more often, it feels less like a celebration of scoring and more like a celebration of self. And while that may have a place, too, it feels way more selfish and self-centered, and way less productive.

As to these specific kids, I think the issue is that they seem to be mimicking adults/pros that they have seen playing. And while they might be okay basketball players, they have neither the skills nor the egos to handle that sort of responsibility. Some of them will excel, but many will eventually hit a wall that is the limit of their ability. I worry about if they'll have the support to handle that moment when it comes. Also, it's just crappy sportsmanship at that level, and that's just how I feel about it.

It's a bit too much.

It's up to the coaches and parents to reel that in
What would you tell them?

Especially if they see KD tweet?
I would say, "I'm your parent, not Kevin Durant. You don't do that. Act like you've been there before. I'm not trying to say don't play with heart.

"I'm not trying to say it don't play with passion. But doing this after every play, every time you play it's tired bro. Celebrate at the end of the game."

I had to correct my son when he started popping off after a decent play in little league baseball. Act like you won before. Save that energy for the spelling bee my G.

After realizing that the kids in the vid are playing AAU ball and not typical grade school I've softened my opinion.

In those leagues it's all for show so most of that's to be expected.

If they're playing for their school teams etc then that behavior needs to stop.

Speak for yourself.

If I tell them not to celebrate talking about a player's too small when that player's 4 inches shorter than them then they won't be celebrating.

Or the only basketball they'll be playing is

Love it, enough of that lets shake hands and hug after the game bullshit. Losing sucks and you should feel bad about it.
