Sony has officially unveiled the next big iteration of the PlayStation 4. The console — codenamed Neo, which the company discussed in brief just ahead of E3 in June — upgrades the three-year-old PS4 hardware with a faster processor, better graphics, and support for 4K resolution. It launches November 10th, and it will cost $399. It’s intended to be sold alongside the base PS4 instead of replacing it, and new games will still be playable on the older hardware. The existence of Pro, formerly called Neo, was first reported on back in March.

The PS4 Pro can output 4K and HDR video, which is powered by an upgraded GPU. Sonly also boosted the clock rate for the new PS4 Pro. It will also come with a 1TB hard drive. "PS4 Pro is not intended to blur the line between console generations," Mark Cerny, the chief architect for the PS4, said on stage. "Instead, the vision is to take the PS4 experience to extraordinary new levels."

Release Date: November 10th

From a marketing standpoint, why did they choose today to publicise this? Given that today Apple is launching the new iPhone 7? That doesn't make the most sense

Well here's something pretty baffling: Sony's just-announced $400 PlayStation 4 Pro game console, an upgraded and more powerful version of the original PS4, won't be able to play 4K Blu-rays when it ships this November. Reporters from Engadget and BBC News have apparently confirmed the news with Sony directly. Instead, the PlayStation Pro will only support 4K playback from streaming services. That's a perplexing decision from a company that has been a strong proponent of Blu-ray from the beginning. Sony reasons that consumers won't mind because the PS4 Pro is "primarily for gaming."

:smh:

It's all a marketing strategy the idea is to get parents and ppl to fork it up right around the holidays especially Xmas these systems are gonna kill it with sales :money::yes:

They said its for gaming yet Naughty Dog and Bioware confirmed that there are no framerate differences. If it is so powerful delay that shit until there is a notable difference. If it can't match PC then don't even make it. Same for Project Scorpio. Now we wait to see what it does with it's 800 terraflops.

They just going to rape pockets with this weak shit fuckery. People who don't pc game have no clue how powerful consoles have to be to run 4k at acceptable framerates. But they are wording things carefully, e.g., "support for 4k gaming," instead of making promises that they know are false as hell.

They still releasing console games locked at 30fps at medium detail at fucking 1080p. It's a shame a lot of folks going to buy a new console thinking they will be able to game at 4k. :smh:

And then they can't even throw in a 4k blue ray player? :smh:

They should've delayed the "Pro"

Basically.... I mean Microsoft is coming out with a more powerful system next year. So as a PlayStation owner, you would have to expect Sony to come out with an even more powerful system in 2018. PlayStation is the only thing making money for Sony, they can't fall behind. So why buy a Pro, when 2 years later you will probably be buying a Ps5.

See this is where I think Microsoft is smart, I bet at E3 they are going to have Halo and Crackdown running on that new system looking fucking amazing and there will be obvious differences in the look. I already know I'm upgrading.

Sony is part fucking founder of the damn Blu-Ray technology..... They are fucking part owner of the patents.... And they don't add 4K Blu-ray playback?!

They literally killed the 360 by having Blu-ray out the box on the PS3.... and they don't put the next generation of Blu-ray in their next generation system?!!

Dumbasses

Setting up a man cave. Haven't owned a system since PS2. I'm not much of a game, but i just want something for incase someone that comes over wants to play. What system should i consider. I like games, but don't live for em or nothing like that.

Unless you're trying to fuck with Playstation VR (or REALLY care about 4k streaming and upscaling) it's no point to buy this. Rumor has it, this system will enable you to run Playstation VR wireless since the extra processing power may make connecting the external processor unnecessary.

This is Sony waving the white flag and deciding not fight the last war. The PS3 was a casualty of a very much unneeded format war. Sony won the Battle it lost the War of Profitability for its Playstation division. The PS3 lost money for most of its life and Bluray isn't the cash cow they thought it would be. They did the math and decided between Piracy and streaming why give a fuck at this point about 4k Bluray. They could wait a year or two and wait for the price drops on that hardware rather than take a bigger loss on this hardware now. In 5 years they can add it in a redesign. Right now 4k Blu-ray is the Domain of Home Theater Buffs who can afford Premium UHDTV. These folks are most likely going to buy a dedicated Mid-range to high-end player such as an Oppo or high end Sony UHD Blu-Ray. So far as I can tell both Sony and Oppo have announced UHD Blu-ray players but they haven't shipped yet. Oppo has several models that will upscale to 4k. The move makes sense to me. Gamers (Especially those under 30) don't care and are more likely to stream. When the Scorpio ships next year I may pick one up if I have a 4k TV otherwise I'll skip it until I do. I don't see a reason yet to replace two perefectly fine HDTVs.

so, since I'm trying to hook up my man cave office, which will include a 4k tv. what do yall suggest, I get a regular ps4 and the new xbox slim? Or should I both new systems or hell just get both older systems and wait until the better new once comes out. No mind you I'm not that big of a gamer, I might play madden, call of duty or something like that... but honestly it will probably end up in the kids area, so they can play it.
