Is this really the 2007 Edition? Most of the files that claim to be are actually an older version, since the 2007 edition requires getting around their copy-protection. Sure it can be done, but it's too much work for a novice.

Here is the most common DVD (about 5 years old) floating around. I think it may be the same as the one posted in this thread, but it also includes Swahili Level I. It works fine and I don't see it as being much different from the newer versions other than the interface and a few other changes. Hell, any version will teach you a language.

I have the downloads but I can't get it to work after putting it on a dvd disc. Do I need to use NERO? The program I am using won't allow me to open and run the file. .. Any help from anyone that had gotten it to work?

Well for starters, the older one I posted is version 2.0.8.1 (released around 2003). It is a non-retail custom DVD, said to be used mainly by businesses. It is a convenient way to have all lessons on one disc (great for schools etc). The DVD will install the main application (called the engine). Once you start the program, you can choose any of the 27 languages to study. If you already have the v2.0.8.1 engine installed (from one of the CD versions floating around), you can just use this DVD for the languages without installing the main engine.

After you download all the files, use WinRAR to reconnect them into one 1.7GB exe file. Double-click on that exe file and it will extract to a larger 2.7GB ISO image file. Burn that ISO to a DVD as an image (click here to learn how) and you will end up with the original DVD. You can also mount the ISO image instead of burning to a DVD by using something like Daemon Tools click here for Daemon Tools. If you still don't know what I am talking about, a Google search will take care of that.

Pros of version 2.0.8.1:
-No copy protection, serials, or cracks..Just install and use.
-Only the main application is installed...language packs treated as data discs.
-Very effective in helping you read and understand languages.

Cons of version 2.0.8.1:
-The lessons instruct the user to select the correct picture being described, but in some instances, the picture subject is not as obvious as it should be.

- It uses the "Total Immersion" method, which is like being in the actual country. This "forces" you to learn the language, but can be disruptive for those used to a classroom setting.

-Not much attention seems to be given to grammar, so you may end up understanding a language much better than actually speaking it.

Someone posted The Rosetta Stone v2.1.4.1A engine awhile back. I found it to function very similar to v2.0.8.1. The problem is that it seems to use new language packs that are copy-protected. The download includes software to get around the protection. However, to me it's not worth the hassle since the older v2.0.8.1 is very similar (same interface and images) and works just fine without hacks. But for those who do use v2.1.4.1A, here is a language pack that works with it. I know this language works, because I tried it last week:

(Tagalog was not available for the older v2.0.8.1)
Use the latest WinZip or WinRAR to extract by clicking the file with the zip extension.

The Rosetta Stone v3.0.67 (2007)
The newer version posted here is probably the very latest Rosetta Stone. While the teaching method is pretty much the same, they finally used much better pictures and made a nicer interface. Instead of just throwing you into the language, there is an audio intro that tells you about the course. It then gives a number of learning options so you can customize the course. The older versions were limited in this area so I would say the improvements are MAJOR. This would be my choice as the version to use unless you require a language only listed with the older version. Instead of copy-protection, now you must activate the product. There is an easy one-time patch that works with some simple instructions (included). I WOULD DISCONNECT FROM THE INTERNET DURING THE INSTALL, SINCE THE THERE IS NO NEED TO UPDATE THE SOFTWARE ONLINE (the update file is already included). For example: After the application install, I just manually copied the license DLL file over the original (there is a small program provided to do it for you as well), I used the supplied application update, entered the suggested data, and it worked. I am surprised that the newer version is much easier to "hack".

Pros of version v3.0.67:
-Much improved over previous versions
-Activation crack seems to be easy to apply if you follow the instructions.
-Gives more attention to grammar

Cons of version v3.0.67:
-It does have to be cracked
-Older languages do not work with this version.
-Unlike previous versions, languages must be "installed"

Conclusion
1) If you prefer the latest and greatest version, then v3.0.67 is the one I recommend.

2) If you need a language not listed with v3.0.67 or prefer a version that is easy to install (no hacks required), then v2.0.8.1 is the one. It is still an effective program to teach you language.

3) If you are going to give this program to someone who is NOT clever with software, then stick with the no-hack-needed v2.0.8.1 as it will teach them a new language.

I take it you are using version 3. Your solution may be to remove and try again. On one system I had no problems, but on another PC, nothing but errors. I will eventually re-install on the second PC (it does function on the second PC, albeit with errors). Here is some install info I found.

How to Install Rosetta Stone Version 3

=====> Disconnect from the internet

10. Once again, do not update online

12. Enter a user name
13. Start program

You may or may not have to activate the program (usually during the
installation of the language packs). To manually activate from the main
screen, goto the middle icon on the upper right of the screen.

3. Just rename it to something like: tracking.db3.old

4. This should fix that error

Part 3
Some people experience problems during installation of the update. Here are a few suggestions:

a)
- delete Rosetta Stone from your computer
- restart computer
- install the program again in the default directory,
- install the update to v. 3.0.57
- apply the crack

b) If you still have problems with the update, you can install the program without update as it still works fine.
- install the application without the update
- use the crack
