Regina King has no issues with British actors portraying American characters

They hired W.C. to be his dialect coach. :hmm:

They'd rather pay someone to teach them how to be us than just hire us.

yeah but you get the point tho.. its easy to say that when you're not the one getting picked over...also you gonna tell me you can't find in america a young black male actor to play the role of south-central LA gangbanger?

Lena Waithe said she wanted to break* a talent to play the role of Queen in Queen and Slim and they were supposed to be two generic black Americans...and in the entirety of young black American male and female actors the only people to qualify came from another country?? OR are they enamored with British actors because of the British "ACTOUR" background plus being able to affect a passable American accent gives them this prestigious perception that a Black American actor from say Detriot just can't have?

*break a talent - to get an unknown actor.

You have to remember acting is to take on the role/persona of a character. I didn't now that Dub C was his voice coach so that is fucked up, especially when you take into account how big the US talent pool potentialy is. Now there could be an agenda too avoid certain stereotypes landing to big a platform that they can then use to manipulate or influence sections of the community once they have gathered a large enough following, all this is easily done now with social media. British actors have been in Hollywood since its conception and actors from around the world aspire to break in to Hollywood.

Just asking but nobody cared that they used African Americans to portray Africans in Black Panther. Forrest Whittaker’s African accent fucks up every scene he in. It would have been better for them not to have accents at all.

It’s an American movie...
Those wack ass Nollywood movies will use booty scratchers to portray Americans.

IMO the whole controversy is ridiculous. Foreigners of all stripes have been playing Americans in Hollywood films for over a century.

The real reason it's an issue amongst African American actors is because there's a shortage of roles, especially dignified roles, for Black people to play. Solve this problem and eventually nobody will care where the actor comes from.

No, this is hate speech:

Wow. You’re so stupid it physically hurts. You and Megacoon.

Why did black Americans run from the South and now running back to South again.

You muthafuckas get gentrified so often, it should be an official holiday this point.

That's part of it. But the other part is casting non-Black American who are removed from Black American history as historical Black figures. Malcolm X, Martin Luther King, Harriet Tubman, and Aretha Franklin have all recently been portrayed by foreign Black actors and actresses, many of whom are virtually unknown in the Black American community.

how many black american actors are playing british characters? How would black brit actors like idris elba and john boyega feel if black american actors took role for characters that were british street dudes and average black british citizens dealing with racism and social dynamics in england??

how do you think Africans react to this treachery?

sam jackson was also very critical of RAPPERS getting roles that he felt trained black ACTORS should have gotten as well. Sam is for black american ACTORS in that argument and anyone who isn't an black american ACTOR shouldn't be getting jobs over those who actually trained for that.

Fictional Africans from fictional African countries in fictional roles. You'd be better off citing Denzel Washington as Steve Biko, Forest Whitaker as Idi Amin, or even Jill Scott as that South African detective.

Or, to take it to another level, Louis Gossett Jr playing Anwar Sadat. Egypt didn't like that shit at all.

It's no different than Daniel Day-Lewis playing Abraham Lincoln.

Again, the problem isn't who's getting the roles, the problem is that those roles really aren't there in the first place.

Quite a few. Don Cheadle is the first to come to mind.

To be honest, many of the new younger U.S. actors suck. It's starting to seem like foreign actors can portray regular U.S. black folks better than U.S. born black folks. U.S. born actors tend to change their dialects, accents, and annunciation to sound more Anglo-Saxon.

Chadwick Boseman played about 3 african characters.

You're missing the point, as usual. Idris Elba is a Ghanaian-Brit who played a South African Xhosa. There is currently controversy about Lupita playing a Nigerian character in "Americanah."

These issues transcend us.

Look at the bigger picture, y'all squabbling over who gets the crumbs while white folk get the cake. I thought y'all was interested in closing the racial wealth gap.

You're conflating two different issues, neither of which you understand.

Hotel Rwanda is, to this day is a banging ass movie and it’s because Don Cheadle delivered. That’s what makes what Regina King is saying spot on.

The vessel don’t make a difference so long as the understanding of the final result is produced at a high level of quality.

To use food as an example, I go to Jamaican spots that have Hispanics cooking. I go to Pakistani spots that have West Africans cooking. I know a Guyanese woman who runs a Thai spot locally. All banging ass food made by people from another culture and race. You can go anywhere and see a different breed of people making something outside their birth culture and deliver.

It’s not about how you start but how you finish.

It happens in all facets of life, including film.

You separate the issues because one of them fits your narrative. The issues are under the same umbrella, which is the person at the top profiting is neither native black american or any other black culture. It's like you are fighting other black folk for a chance to be in the fields picking cotton instead of working to take over the plantation.

We don’t give a damn.
Those are American movies, made in America, for Americans.
African movies made in Africa, for Africans will have an African cast.

On Netflix I've been watching those movies that are made in africa, some of them are pretty good.

That was a movie created by Americans, in America, using American studios and using characters and stories created by Americans.
