Smith self-released two fiery albums in 2013 and 2014 before returning to the Blue Note fold in 2016. Over the next year, Smith was named as an NEA Jazz Master and made notable, cross-genre collaborations with Norah Jones and The Roots. Smith's final albums, All In My Mind and Breathe, were released in 2018 and 2021, respectively, and featured studio collaborations with Iggy Pop, along with magical in-concert explorations with his working band of Kriesberg, drummers Johnathan Blake or Joe Dyson, and horns.

Oh man, we are losing true legends. This cat was one of the innovators of Jazz Funk and even took Soul to a new place. We been dancing to his music here since the 70's, with the 80's being in the all-dayers and all-nighters club sessions and Weekenders away. Dedicated Jazz Funk dancers still dance to his music now. Cannot thank you enough, sir, but coming from the hearts of every jazz funker here in the UK: thank you for the music. Peaceful Journey Brotha Lonnie Liston Smith.

That keyboard work is a lost art.

My true regret in life is not learning to play the Hammond B-3 with the Leslie.
My Dad had the same set up with his jazz combo in the 60s & 70s.
The sound is amazing. He made that organ cook! (damn near Dr. Smith level!!)
"Why didn't you pass on the skill, Pops?"
