A chapter leader in the far-right Proud Boys extremist gang was charged with assault Sunday in Akron, Ohio, after he was recorded shouting racial epithets at a black woman and then sucker-punching her in the face.
A man police identified as Andrew Walls, 26, was caught on video outside a bar in the early hours of Sunday, stumbling and scuffling with other patrons while spewing a torrent of racial slurs. His victim, 23-year-old Cameron Morgan, was passing by with a friend when she heard Walls and others around him screaming “Fucking *******.”
She later told her father that she confronted Walls after realizing she was the only Black person around.
“We were like ... ‘You can’t say that. That’s not OK,’” she told her dad, local teacher and former sportswriter David Lee Morgan Jr., who recorded the conversation and provided a transcript to HuffPost.
Video taken by Cameron Morgan’s friend shows what happened next: Walls squares up, points his finger at Morgan, and repeats the racist slur, adding: “Bitch, shut your mouth.” He then cocks his right fist and punches her directly in the face, the impact of which releases a blood-curdling pop.
Morgan was treated for a concussion.

But once the video began to make the rounds on social media Sunday, activists quickly identified the assailant as Walls. They also unearthed a previous story about him in the local Akron Beacon Journal, which identified him as the vice president of the Akron-Canton chapter of the Proud Boys.
Walls’ chapter didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
Reached by phone Sunday, David Morgan’s voice trembled as he recalled waking up to see a video on his phone of his daughter being assaulted.
“Soon as we saw it, I was in tears,” he said. “I just cried, because, I just watched somebody punch my daughter, who wouldn’t hurt a fly.
Morgan said his daughter went to an urgent care clinic and was treated for a concussion after she saw stars and blacked out. Her face swelled up temporarily, to the point where she couldn’t move her jaw.
“She couldn’t really open up her mouth to eat,” he said.
Walls was charged with possessing a firearm while intoxicated and assault, and a warrant was issued for his arrest. The severity of Cameron’s injuries may lead to his assault charge being upgraded to a felony, the Akron Beacon Journal reports. Akron police are also considering an added ethnic intimidation charge.
David Morgan said the revelation of Walls’ Proud Boys affiliation changed everything for him. He said he was aware of the gang and the national tour of political violence they’d been on since their founding in 2016, but he “never thought it would hit home until today.”
“This changes a lot for me, in the sense that, I want to get involved now,” he said. “This happening was time for me to wake the hell up. And I hate that my daughter had to suffer that for me to wake the hell up.”

Walls kept going after the recording ended, and dragged Cameron into the street by her hair, her father said. She was shaken up, he said, and left the scene without initially calling police.

Though Walls wasn’t wearing his Proud Boys uniform — a black and yellow Fred Perry polo — during the assault, his membership in the gang suggests a predisposition for violence and bigotry. The Proud Boys, designated as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center and a terrorist organization by Canada, have close ties to white supremacist groups and other extremists, and violence is literally written into their rules. (The gang’s highest rank, known as the Fourth Degree, is given only to members who commit a significant act of violence “for the cause.”)

Police have charged Andrew Walls, 26, with possessing a firearm while intoxicated and assaulting a 23-year-old Black woman after video captured what appeared to be Walls hurling racial and derogatory slurs at her and others.
The victim and her friend were walking along the sidewalk in Akron’s Highland Square neighborhood after midnight Sunday when they came upon a group of about five men fighting. Police believe it was Walls who punched the young Black woman in the face.
The father of the victim said the man dragged his daughter into the street by her hair after the punch. Witnesses told the Beacon Journal that they observed a firearm under the man's shirt, tucked into his belt, during the fight.
Capt. Dave Laughlin said Walls called Akron police around 9:30 p.m. Sunday to agree to turn himself in. Authorities in Wayne and Portage counties had been knocking on doors into the evening Sunday trying to help officers in Akron find Walls.
Laughlin said police interviewed several people near Highland Tavern on West Market Street shortly after the altercation. Two men said they'd been "jumped by a bunch of people," Laughlin reported. "They said the individuals who assaulted them fled the area right after the incident."
According to statements from the victim and a video taken by her friend, the fight began with a small brawl and ended in a large melee.
Akron police Lt. Mike Miller told the Beacon Journal earlier in the day that officers responded around 12:30 a.m. to the 800 block of West Market Street on a report of as many as five people fighting. Miller said no arrests were made, no one requested medical service and “police assistance” was “declined.”
At the time, Miller did not say more about a possible investigation of the incident, which would be handled by the overnight shift commander.
The Black woman’s father called his daughter later Sunday morning. The video her friend posted on social media sites was already going viral.
In it, two men are leaning against the Highland Tavern as three other men scuffle. All are white. A man in a green button-up shirt and boots falls to the ground. He staggers to his feet and then walks over to the Black woman and her friend and says: “What’s up? (Racial slur) b****, shut your mouth.”
He then punches the Black woman in the mouth. The inside of her lip is noticeably split in a photo posted with the video.
She did not call police or stay at the scene, her father said, because “she was so shaken up, didn’t know what to do” and her head and face hurt. After the punch she described being pulled by the hair as observers who came to her defense squared off with her assailant and the men with him.
“When I saw the video, I said we need to go file a report,” said the father, who recorded his Sunday conversation with his daughter as a contemporaneous account of what happened.
She told her father that she and a friend left Annabell’s Bar and Lounge and headed northwest when they came upon the small group of men fighting outside the Highland Tavern.
“We were like, what is going on?” she told her father. “They're all screaming. He's screaming '(racial slur) this, (racial slur) that'. I'm the only Black person around. I don’t know who he was talking to, but he was calling white people (a racial slur).”
“We walked by, and me and (my friend) are just like ... ‘who talks like that?’” she recounted. “You can't say that. Like, that's not OK. You're in the most LGBTQ-friendly liberal neighborhood in Akron. And you're screaming all these racial slurs.”
That’s when she was struck in the mouth with a closed fist.
The father and daughter went together to the police station Sunday morning. They were given the name and number for the night-shift sergeant and told to come back later.
They returned Sunday afternoon, showed police the video and filed a report. Charges were pressed and the warrant was issued for Walls sometime after.
