PHILADELPHIA -- Two more people have lost their lives this weekend as the city's homicide total maintains a deadly pace from last year of more than a killing per day.

The latest slaying was reported at 49th and Aspen streets in the Millcreek section of West Philadelphia.

Dwayne Green, 36, of the 800 block of North 39th Street, was shot in the chest and stomach at 5:44 a.m. and died at Temple University Hospital, police said. There was no word of arrests or a motive.

On Friday night, three people were struck at about 10:20 p.m. near West Lehigh Avenue and North Ringgold Street, police said.

Victims who were ages 15, 19 and 20 were taken to local hospitals, but the youngest was later pronounced dead. Police were reporting no suspects or motive.

Men were also left in critical condition after two other incidents. A 23-year-old man was shot in the stomach on the 6600 block of North 18th Street, while an hour later a 22-year-old man was stabbed on the 5000 block of Wayne Avenue.

On Saturday morning, Mayor John Street attended an Operation Safer Streets community meeting in Southwest Philadelphia.

The mayor was talking not just about the homicides and additional police at the meeting -- held at the First Baptist Church of Paschall at 71st Street and Woodland Avenue -- but also opening additional curfew centers, recruiting more truancy officers and controlling gun violence.

"This is a national problem, people. Homicides are soaring everywhere, and it's guns. It is the guns. All you have to do is put a gun in the hands of an angry man or woman and you have disaster," Street told the crowd.

The list of victims for 2007 is more than 20 percent longer than at the same point last year.

In 2006, there were 406 homicides reported in Philadelphia -- the most since 1997 -- and the 100th did not occur until April 14.

Police Investigate Two More Fatal Shootings, Body Found

PHILADELPHIA -- Philadelphia police were busy Sunday morning investigating three more homicides.

A fatal shooting was reported in North Philadelphia near the intersection Fifth Street and Lindley Avenue. Police said medics transported a man to a hospital where he later died.

Another man was fatally shot near Dewey and Market streets in West Philadelphia after 10 p.m. Saturday.

The latest shooting at about 2:30 a.m. Sunday on the 1500 block of Lindenwood Street in the city's Kingsessing section sent a man to the hospital. Investigators said the victim, who they did not identify, suffered multiple gunshot wounds.

Gun violence was also reported overnight at 52nd and Arch streets and on the 4100 block of 16th Street, although the wounded are expected to survive those incidents.

And police are trying to identify a woman whose body was found at about 5:30 p.m. Saturday on the 3000 block of Witte Street in Port Richmond.

Children made the discovery while walking in the area. Investigators said someone dumped the woman with a bag on her head.

The slayings have pushed the city's total for 2007 to at least 103 homicides. :hmm:

Well, there's still a long way to go to get to the Philly record of 500+ from the early '90s (when homicide was significantly more frequent in the U.S. than it is now).

W. Phila. killing is 100th homicide

APRIL SAUL / Inquirer Staff Photographer
Among those attending the prayer breakfast at Our Lady of Hope Church are (from left) Evelyn Gutierrez, Carmelo Santiago and Melvin Figueroa, all of whom lost loved ones to homicide. Gutierrez said she prayed for peace and for her father, who was killed this year. Ahead of such giant cities as New York and Los Angeles, Philadelphia marked its 100th homicide of 2007 yesterday not with a terrifying gun battle, but with the discovery of a body in West Philadelphia.

There they found Dwayne Greene, 37, with gunshot wounds to the chest and stomach. The 100th homicide victim, who lived in the city's Mantua section, was pronounced dead at 5:44 a.m. at Temple University Hospital. Police said they knew of no motive and had no suspects.

Hours after Greene's death, the mayor spoke at an 8 a.m. stop-the-violence rally at First Baptist Church of Paschall in Southwest Philadelphia.

A half-hour later, 150 people gathered at a prayer breakfast at Our Lady of Hope Church in North Philadelphia. The interdenominational service, "Prayer for a Safer City," featured remarks by a rabbi, an imam and a minister.

Among those who attended was Evelyn Gutierrez, 48, who said she prayed for "peace, justice and the opportunity to make the community safer" - and for her 79-year-old father, Dario Gutierrez, who was bludgeoned to death in his Fairhill home in January.

But the gentle folk with bowed heads may be no match for the culture of violence that thrives on some city streets. On Friday night, a hostile crowd of about 75 swarmed outside Temple University Medical Center after the city's 99th killing.

Fourteen-year-old Taron George was dead, the victim of an apparently calculated drive-by shooting at 10:20 p.m. at Somerset and Ringgold Streets.

Temple doctors had cut open the chest of George's 21-year-old companion, whom police have not identified, and were massaging his heart when his younger brother began to tell police what happened.

The boy's mother cut him off and loudly warned her son " 'not to say a f-ing word,' " according to an officer who was at the scene.

" 'Don't talk to the f-ing cops,' " the officer quoted the woman as saying. " 'We handle this our own way.' "

"I couldn't believe it," said the officer, who asked not to be identified.

Moments later, four young men ran up to the victim's brother and told him to "say nothing to the cops."

The scene quickly grew even more surreal.

The mother of a third shooting victim arrived and told police: "I know who did it, and he's in this crowd."

As the woman looked around for the gunman, the crowd berated her and told her to keep silent, the officer said. "People were telling her to be quiet and saying, 'We'll get you, bitch.' "

Police called for reinforcements.
