M. Night Shyamalan’s Secretly-Made Movie ‘The Visit’ Hits Theaters Next Year

M. Night Shyamalan may perhaps be one of the most disappointing auteurs in the minds of many critics and movie fans. He had a strong start with The Sixth Sense, which may go down in history as one of those most quoted movies ever, but his career took a turn when he released The Village, and things only went downhill from there, with films like Lady in the Water and The Last Airbender. Shyamalan’s name became a joke, so much so that attaching his name to something became a sort of poison (remember when audiences groaned at the very sight of his name in the trailer for the movie Devil?). It may be because of that reaction that Shyamalan went into hiding to make his next movie, which is a low budget film called The Visit.

Deadline reports that Universal Pictures has just acquired Shyamalan’s new thriller, and that it is slated for a September 11, 2015 release. Word also has it that this new flick is more in the vein of Shyamalan’s earlier work than his later work.

“He wanted to get back to his roots and make a film outside the studio system, and he self-financed and shot this in and around his home in Pennsylvania. He then partnered with Blumhouse, which has a first-look deal at Universal and specializes in low-budget genre fare like ‘Ouija,’ its latest effort that topped the weekend box office two straight weeks.”

This may be what Shyamalan needs in order to make a comeback. On top of the declining quality of his films, his ego and overall outlook are something audiences picked up on and responded to negatively. It is a trait that even his actors are aware of. The Huffington Post sat down with Samuel L. Jackson a couple years back, and in that interview, Jackson compared Shyamalan to Tarantino.

“Quentin makes movies that Quentin wants to see. I don’t think M. Night makes movies for the same reason And there’s, you know, ‘I’m smarter than everybody coming to watch my movie.’ Quentin’s not that. He’s just, ‘I want you to love my movie. I want you to love it and enjoy it because this is f**king cool.'”

We shall see if this new film will mark the return of the old M. Night Shyamalan soon enough. The synopsis for the movie is as follows.

“‘The Visit’ focuses on a brother and sister who are sent to their grandparents’ remote Pennsylvania farm for a weeklong trip. Once the children discover that the elderly couple is involved in something deeply disturbing, they see their chances of getting back home are growing smaller every day.”

Do You Care?

 @ this dude having to go into hiding to make a movie.

I don't care, I'll wait for the BGOL release, he won't see my money at the theater. :smh:

I still need to check out after earth...couldn't get over jaden smith's acting tho...but I'll def check for this

It's going to be terrible. His movies are terrible. That's just what it is.

The Sixth Sense is the ONLY movie of his that is worth a shit.

you know re-watching Unbreakable...

if they had released that NOW?

it would have been an even BIGGER hit (and it was a big hit at the time) and would have had some great sequel potential.

surprised no one has even made a comic series or at least a fan flick about it.

I would never pay for an M.Night Shittyman flick....

I will see this on HBO,if the reviews are good:lol:

I don't get the Shyamalan hate.

Sixth Sense was awesome.

Unbreakable was really good.

Signs sucked.

I never saw Lady in the Water, but I heard it sucked.

The Village was kinda mediocre, but...

The Happening was not bad at all, and I saw that at the theater. I didn't feel like I wasted money or anything.

I heard After Earth sucked, too, even though I didn't see it.

I know nothing about The Last Airbender, but I don't think Shyamalan really stood a chance with that one. Seems like the studios had already planned on fucking it up completely.

His batting average is really right around the Wachowski level, and I'll still pay to see a Wachowski movie if I think it will be good.

it just became something cool to say...I'm not saying everyone has to like his films...but it just seems to be the "thing" to go overboard in bashing his work...I liked signs...lady in the water was pretty lousy tho imo...I found it kind of interesting too how sam jackson painted the picture of him/his films as being arrogant but quentin tarantino as being cool

He's also indirectly responsible for the name "The Fappening", and for that he gets extra points from me.

Lady in the water was the worst movie I ever saw in my life. That shit had me walking out the theater sleepy and angry at the same time.

Never liked any of his flicks. People get caught on the twist ending and think it is a good flick. I knew what was going on in the Sixth Sense and was fairly bored by it. If you pay any attention then you would not have been easily fooled, but people got caught on the ending. Boooo! None of his work is good

is signs the one with the glasses of water?

cause that was some ole bullshite

The aliens can come across the galaxy...but can't get into a basement with a crusty door:lol:

Water was their kryptonite...so they invade a planet 3/4 water.

The dumbest aliens ever...

I like the premise. Reminds me of my youth and going to visit my relatives and learning my uncle was pimping white ladies...literally a pimp...in bumblefuck West Virginia.

Man dude is good at some stuff he just got over ambitious and wanted everybody to go with him down the rabbit hole and then they didn't.

Sixth Sense was great
Unbreakable was great
Signs wasn't the best however everything about the story sans the aliens was actually great.
After Earth was set to be a mega hit in the U.S until it came out he directed it and then everybody didn't go see it but it was a great movie and still became a big hit.

He just has a lane he needs to stick to. he's good at creating atmosphere. The problem is that he has to find a new way to deliver. it can't always be a twist because after the 2nd one the people are LOOKING for it. He has to get people refocused on the story and involved. again.

People are going to go see this movie strictly to see the twist. they're going to spend their time focusing on what it could be looking for clues and miss out on the whole movie.

I always thought the hate he got was bullshit. Like I don't understand how you can shit on all his movies but actually like Unbreakable and Sixth Sense and shit. But you shit on After Earth? Shit makes no sense to me.
